Africa's largest growing economy in Sub-Saharan Africa, Nigeria is a developing country, with

a population of about 200million and a growth rate of 2.38 according to the2006 Nigerian

census. It has populations distributed at 48.3% urban and 57.7% rural and population

density at 139 people per square km. Waste management presents problems in a mega city

like Lagos, Abuja and other major Nigerian cities which are linked with economic

development, population growth resulting in the rise in industrial and domestic waste.

Effective handling of waste is an important factor in the developmental progress of any

nation. since times immemorial, all societies and cultures have looked for effective

management of waste and often, to put it to good use. Used and discarded materials are

transformed to beautiful artifacts, while Leftovers from food commonly form the base for fresh

dishes. All aluminum goes to Saki, Oyo state, Nigeria where they are con-verted to cooking

pots. All plastic is transformed into plates, spoons, chairs, and other things used in

households. All broken beer bottles end up again as good and clean bottles for industries

which are starving for raw materials. More and more State Governments are heading towards

private sector involvement to offset the governmental bureaucracy, which is cost saving and

sustains health benefits.

WASTE TO WEALTH is oriented to increase productivity among the Nigerian Youths and

make them partners to a cleaner society, contribute to the Federal Government efforts at

creating massive job opportunities, Reduce the pressure induced by waste, on the

environment, and enhancing Local content as Nigeria looks inward.
