VWS&T: A Nationwide Coverage
VWS&T - World Leader in Water Reuse
We are the world leader in water reuse
 Over 35 water reuse projects in Australia recycling 550 Megalitres a day;
 From:
Raw & treated sewage, ground water, industrial effluent, cooling tower bleed……
 Using:
Biological treatment, Microfiltration / Ultrafiltration, Reverse Osmosis, Ozonation…..
 For:
Irrigation (agriculture, gardens, golf courses), toilet flushing, Industrial reuse…

What Water Do We want to Reuse?
 We start with waste water
 We want to collect it…..
 make sure its clean enough,
 so we can re-use it.
What Waste Water?
 Water can come from;
Ground water, raw sewage, treated sewage, rain water, grey water, equipment drains…….
 Depending on where it comes from, water normally has;
Undissolved solids (Total Suspended Solids: TSS)
• Causing dirty surfaces, blockages, erosion, corrosion.
• Can be removed by filtering.
Dissolved salts; (Total Dissolved Solids: TDS)
• Causing hard mineral deposits, corrosion.
• Can be managed using Reverse Osmosis, pH, dilution
 Other:
• Solvents, oil and grease and other organics & nutrients
• Can be removed by microbiological treatment
• Bacteria, and other microbes
• Can be removed by UV, chlorine etc.
What Clean Water?
 Irrigation Reuse
Needs saltiness and health aspects managed
Equipment Reuse (Boilers, cooling towers, etc)
Needs saltiness and organics managed: corrosion & scale, Legionaires disease, etc.
Non-Potable Water: (Toilet flushing, equipment washing)
Aim for drinking water chemistry, but not guaranteed.
 Potable Water:
Needs to meet stringent requirements for drinking
High Purity Water: for pharmaceuticals, labs, manufacturing, HP boilers.
Needs minimal dissolved salts and gases.
Mains water needs further treatment too.

Re-use Options
 Waste Water Sources:
 Not easy to re-use:
• Cooling tower drains water is salty.
• Black water and grey water are salty, microbe laden, need filtering etc.
• Ground water is typically salty
• Sea water is salty.
 Easier to re-use:
• Rainwater, stormwater or lake water; needs filtering
• Grey water (if controlled at source and disinfected)
Easy to use (but not readily accessible):
• Condensate from de-humidifiers, heat exchangers etc,
• Aquifer water (southern highlands, central coast, etc)
Re-use Options
 Re-use Water Applications:
 Non-stringent requirements:
• Toilet flushing: Can be salty.
• Filter backwashing: can be salty.
• Irrigation: can have nutrients (organics), and some salt.
 More Stringent:
• Cooling towers: Needs moderately low salt content, organics, solids.
• Equipment washing/rinsing: health aspects and residue need care
 Quite stringent:
• Drinking water,
• Boilers, specialist processes.

Case Studies – Reuse
 Australia
Eraring PS: Treated sewage to non-potable boiler feedwater
Bayswater PS: Cooling tower bleed to cooling tower feed
Various Golf Clubs: Treated sewage to irrigation
Arnotts: Industrial Effluent to potable water
Orica / Botany: Ground Water to cooling towers and boilers
Brampton Island Raw Sewage to irrigation
Many others in Australia and overseas.

Conclusion
 Anything is possible.
Large projects are economical and tried and tested.
Small projects need to be done with elegance and ingenuity.
Our challenge is to pick the right technology from the myriad available,
 and provide rapid, practical advice.
With Veolia, you get sensible solutions, and a plant that will work…forever.
