Discolored Water
When your service is restored, you mayexperience temporary discoloration of thewater or trapped air in the pipes. WSSCsuggests running all cold water taps for fiveminutes. If you have a single-lever faucet, set it to run the cold water. Begin with thehighest faucet in your home and then openthe other faucets one at a time, movingfrom your highest floor to your lowest. Youshould also flush your refrigerator’s waterlines.
Opening your taps forces trapped air out ofthe plumbing system and clears sediment ormineral deposits that may have been loos-ened during the water main replacementwork. WSSC does not recommend that youuse discolored water. The sediment and min-eral deposits can alter the water’s taste andstain clothes that are washed in the water. Ifyou still experience problems after 24 hours, please call WSSC’s 24-hour emergency num-ber at 301-206-4002.
