  2. 2. The Philippine is made up of 7,110 islands with a land area of 300,000 kilometres. The Philippine has a total of 421 rivers including the Pulangi river and the Agusan river.
  3. 3. 50 of the rivers are considered biologically dead including Pasig River. These bodies of water have become the receptacle of different types of waste and around 50% of it is domestic waste. Agusan River

Water Resources The country is endowed with rich natural resources, including water, which are essential for the countrys economic development and in meeting its Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Water resources of the Philippines include inland freshwater (rivers, lakes, and groundwater), and marine (bay, coastal, and oceanic waters.
  6. 6. Fatal Accident: Mining accident on March 24, 1996. Marcopper Mines pit drainage leaked in one of the major rivers in Marinduque. The leak had released 1.6 million cubic meter of tailings into the Makulapnit Boac River System.
  7. 7. The Philippine has the largest coastline in the world and it is rich inland water consisting of rivers and lakes. The countrys inland waters are made up of 421 rivers, 79 natural lakes and more than 50,000sq/m of water reservoir. Ulot RiverAgno River
  8. 8. Philippine Effort to Clean the Waters DENR have created several programs to enhance water quality and its rehabilitation. One of these programs is the Industrial Eco-watch that aims to encourage industries to conduct voluntary self- regulation among establishments and to reduce pollution beyond compliance.
  9. 9. Another is the Tap Watch program that monitors deep wells in poor baranggays and analyzes water sample for presence of microbiological organisms. Beach Ecowatch program aims to establish baseline data on the present quality of bathing beaches and inform the facility owners to institute measures to prevent deterioration.
