• 70.000 million people practicing open defecation our target open defecation free in 2014.

• Synergized implemented community-based total sanitation (5 pillars : CLTS, Hand washing, water, waste water, solid waste) through SHP

• We have: – 43 million students (from kindergarten to senior

secondary)

– 2,7 million teachers

– 245,000 educational institutions in 33 provinces

Issues and Challenges

• 1956 pilot project

• 1970 organizing committee established

• 1982 Islamic school part of SHP

• 1984 strategy and policies on SHP established

• 1989 SHP managing team established

• 2000 decentralization era

• 2003 national policy on community-based water and sanitation

• 2008 community-based total sanitation

• 2009 mid-term development planning 2010-2014

ACHIEVEMENT

• SHP managing team established from central – district – sub district – school

• Yearly health school competition best practice in 1.000 school

• ‘little doctor’ project

• Variety of world initiatives such as FRESH and Health Promoting School has been implemented through SHP

• Central government commitment SHP as part of National Sanitation Acceleration Program (NSAP) and community-based total sanitation

– Many players UNICEF, CARE, SAVE the CHILDREN, PLAN International, Catholic Relief Services, Gates Foundation, DUBAI Cares, WSP World Bank, USAID, AUSAID, the Netherland Embassy, not to mention the Government of Indonesia and local NGO such as Indonesia Toilet Association, PRAMUKA, etc.

– Working together in harmony watsan working group, watsan networking and Sanitation Donor Group .
