IMPORTANCE OF WATER AS A BASIC HUMAN NEED:

Water is a basic and essential necessity to life. But the acquisition of this indispensible

resource is a daily ordeal for the people dwelling on far flung hilly areas of AJK. Particularly

women had to walk several miles each day to collect enough water as fetching water for

domestic use as well as for watering animals is the responsibility of the women of the of such

poor areas not confine to AJK only. Every woman from the village spent an average of more

than half of her working time in acquiring water. The situation became worse during the early

summer and late autumn when the flow of water from the springs decreased and water need

increased. At least one person from each household in the village is solely reserved for

bringing water from far-flung sources to meet the daily requirements.

    LOCALE PROFILE

Besides other miseries of life, the poor girls used to walk miles away from home and fetch

drinking water from a spring in a nearby village. This is very difficult situation for the women

particularly girls. Something culturally seems inappropriate, and not very secure in some ways

and areas. But no other option available to the village people. One of such villages is Kalas Ser

of Union council Noora Seri Muzaffarabad AJK 25 Km away from the main city. The only

narrow link road leading to the village situated at up mountains is worse and deplorable, a

horrors that residents have to experience on a daily basis. Travelling by motor vehicle, motor

bikes, is very difficult and painful task. Clean drinking facility was available in village before thedevastating earthquake of 8th Oct 2005 but destroyed. Since 2005 this area was neglected and

least attracted by any social development agency.

    KDFs INTERVENTION

Karwan Development Foundation was approached by the residents through our Mr. Mushtaq

KDF field coordinator for AJK. Thanks to the Engineer who worked as volunteer. He visited the

village, workout an estimated cost of the water supply project. The active volunteer

participation of the residents helped reducing the cost of labour, mason etc. which pave the

way to facilitate more villages to connect with water channel constructed by KDF. Now we feel

a great sense of achievement and satisfaction after being provided the clean drinking facility to

around 4000 people in Kalas Seri and adjacent villages.

    DM AID SUPPORT

Friends at DM AID were kind enough that they approved the project and support us financially.

Special thanks to Sister Sarwa Hamid Alifor contributing a big share in this particular project.

    COMMUNITY RESPONSE

The active volunteer participation of the residents helped reducing the cost of labour, mason

etc. which pave the way to facilitate more villages to connect with water channel constructed

by KDF. Now we feel a great sense of achievement and satisfaction after being provided the

clean drinking facility to around 4000 people in Kalas Seri and adjacent villages.

We will take you to the pictorial journey of this project; you will find yourself at every step. It

can be observed in the pictures that there is no proper road to the area; more over there is a

limit to travel even by jeeps. Afterwards one has to go by foot. It took us more than 40 minutes

    to reach village Kalas Seri.
