WATERSHED APPROACH
Watershed: A geo hydrological area that drains at a common point on the drainage system.It is bounded by ridgeline which starts from and closes at the same common drainage
point.
Concept: Watershed concept relates to the conservation and integrated development of natural
resources like land, water and vegetation.

1. Watershed approach provides a logic frame for establishing the
biophysical linkages between upland and downstream activities.
2. Waterdshed approach enables stakeholders planners and managers to
develop the natural resources in a logic manners and on sustainablebasis.
3. Land use activities and up land disturbance often result in a chain of
environmental impact that can readily examined in watershed.
4. Watershed provide a frame work for analyzing the effect of human
interaction on the environment . The environmental impact within the
watershed operate as feed back for change in social system.
5. Watershed project facilitates integration of forestry ,soil conservation.
farming system and community development programmes.

NEED
Knowledge of land & soil such as slopes, geology land use, soil type, soildepth, climate, social economic, legal aspect of the watershed area forobtaining the most rational and productive interaction between theseresources.
Watershed approach helps in integrated planning for conservation,development of land and water resources on sustainable basis inaccordance with their nature and problem.
Watershed is considered to be ideal unit for managing natural resources onone hand and maintenance of executed work and to evaluate their impacton other hand.

WATERSHED MANAGEMENT
Watershed generally consist of these physical sectors.
Non arable land which include forest land pasture land and barren land.
Arable land.
Drainage area with net work of drainage line and water bodies.These component are hydro logically interspersed and would have to betreated as on geo hydrological entity for planning and implementation ofwatershed development programme in order to ensure optimum use ofnatural resources on sustainable basis.

Active participation of people and functional groups. Promotion of skill of member of community based organizations (CBO)W.C,SHG,UG through appropriate training.

APPROACH
Micro watershed of 1000-5000 hectare in selected village is ideal
for treatment.
Watershed development project must be planned, implemented by
the people and their functional groups.
Each watershed development project may be treated in phased
manner over a period of 4-7 years.
PIA and independent organization should act as a facilitator.

ORGANIZATIONAL SUPPORT
People participation in form of watershed committee.
Project implementation agency.
Four technical person WDT.
Secretary is provided for assisting president of W.C.
Users group and self help group has been given responsibility of Planningand Managing works and activities.
DRDA will have over all responsibility for smooth implementation and reviewof the project.
Funding:Water shed project is being funding @ Rs. 12,000/- Hectare of treatablearea.

GUIDELINES FOR WATERSHED DEVELOPMENT
GOI has provided common guidelines for watershed developmentproject funded under IWMP. These guidelines have becomeseffective from 2008 State Level Nodal Agency (SLNA) have initiatedthe process of implementation of IWMP as per common guidelinesin the State
Guidelines envisage that: Programme should be implemented with active participation of local
people and their functional groups.
An independent agency PIA has been mobilized through WDT tovillage community to form SHG,UG & W.C.
Application of participating Rural appraisal (PRA) technique forassessment of local resources, felt need and prioritization of
problem as well as selection of works and activities.

PROJECT MODE
Watershed approach keeping in view objective location, time frame, budgetand staff.
PIA Managed watershed projects in the Distt. Timeframe for project is 4-7 years.
Budget for project activities has been based on treatable area.
PIA,WDT, Functional groups are the key functional of the project.
The objective is to have integrated development ad up lift of socio-economicstatus of watershed community on sustainable basis:

FINANCIAL POWER
75 % funds (60% watershed development works + 15% livelihood and
production system) allocated and kept at the disposal of watershedcommittee. Funds are operated through joint account opened in local bank.
Another account in the name of WDF to credit the contributions anddonations will be operated at the watershed level.

Emphasis is given to educate the community on administrative and financialarrangement as well as work under programme on one hand and role andresponsibility of all those who are involved in planning and implementation
of watershed development programme on the other hand for transparencyfollowing action are emphasized.
