The Na onal Catholic Register Pope Francis: Human Dignity Has Serious Political Implications VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis said that Chris an faith demands conversion from individualism and a commitment to defending the inherent dignity of every person. “While we work for the cure of a virus that a ects everyone without dis nc on, faith urges us to work seriously and ac vely to ght indi erence in the face of viola ons of human dignity,” Pope Francis said Aug. 12. “We want to recognize the human dignity in every person, whatever his or her race, language or condi on might be,” the Pope said at his general audience.
He said that the pandemic has “shed light on broader social ills,” including “a distorted view of the person” that ignores human dignity and “fosters an individualis c and aggressive throw-away culture, which transforms the human being into a consumer good.” “In the light of faith we know, instead, that God looks at a man and a woman in another manner. He created us not as objects but as people loved and capable of loving; He has created us in His image and likeness. In this way He has given us a unique dignity, calling us to live in communion with Him, in communion with our sisters and our brothers, with respect for all crea on,” Pope Francis said. “The pandemic has highlighted how vulnerable and interconnected we are all. If we do not take care of each other, star ng with the least, with those who are most a ected, including crea on, we cannot heal the world,” he said.
Following the general audience, Pope Francis met with United Na ons High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet at the Va can. In recent months, Bachelet, the former president of Chile, has spoken out about child marriage in Somalia, human rights viola ons in Yemen, and the Iranian government’s repression of civil society. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights’ spokesperson has also expressed concern over the applica on of China’s Na onal Security Law in Hong Kong and Lebanon’s socio-economic crisis. The Va can has not released further details of the content of the pope’s mee ng with Bachelet. Pope Francis had said at his general audience that humans have “inalienable dignity” because humanity was created in the image of God, quo ng the Second Va can Council’s pastoral cons tu on, Gaudium et Spes. He said that this lies at “the founda on of all social life and determines its opera ve principles.”
“In modern culture, the closest reference to the principle of the inalienable dignity of the person is the Universal Declara on of Human Rights, which Saint John Paul II de ned as a ‘milestone on the long and di cult path of the human race’ and as ‘one of the highest expressions of the human conscience,’” Pope Francis said. “Rights are not only individual, but also social; they are of peoples, na ons. The human being, indeed, in his or her personal dignity, is a social being, created in the image of God, One and Triune,” he said. “We are social beings; we need to live in this social harmony, but when there is sel shness, our outlook does not reach others, the community, but focuses on ourselves, and this makes us ugly, nasty and sel sh, destroying harmony.”
The pope’s re ec on on human dignity is part of a weekly series of catechesis on Catholic social teaching, which he began last week. Pope Francis said that he wants to “tackle together the pressing issues that the pandemic has highlighted, especially social diseases...May the Lord ‘restore our sight’ so as to rediscover what it means to be members of the human family. And may this sight be translated into concrete ac ons of compassion and respect for every person and of care and safeguarding of our common home.”

SACRIFICIAL GIVING Sacred Heart Parish & Saint Patrick Parish
Saint Patrick Parish has had secure online giving since 2013, with over 100 parishioners giving regularly. At this time we encourage BOTH parishes to use this site for easily making their donations. Sacred Heart parishioners can enter a note online (special intention) that they want donations to go to Sacred Heart and we have the capability of transferring that money to the proper parish account. The link to sign up for online giving is: www.osvonlinegiving.com/1470.
There are baskets located immediately at the entrance to the church for your weekly offertory contributions. We continue to encourage parishioners to sign up for online giving, or we invite you to mail in or drop off envelopes to the secure mailbox outside the Collaborative office door.
Please continue to prayerfully consider how you can continue to offer your weekly financial support to our parishes.
Do you ever experience “soul-thirst?” Sometimes it happens because we are exhausted from over-work. Sometimes it occurs because we have turned toward things which shrink our soul and cause us to neglect it. Sometimes it happens for reasons we cannot clearly see. David not only experienced this kind of soul-thirst, he wrote songs about it. In fact, the psalms speak about the soul 99 times! If we are interested in soul-care, Psalm 63 is a great place to start. While in the deserts of Judah, David’s parched throat reminds him of the spiritual dryness of his soul. Often our lives are so filled with activity that there is little time left for soul-care. Where will we ever find space in our schedules for solitude, reflection, and the soul-nurturing worship of God when it can be a challenge for us to even enjoy a proper homemade meal? We will find it where David found it. Even in the harsh reality of the desert, his times of worship nourished his famished soul. What he had experienced in the temple gave him sustenance in the heat of the desert. As a result, his encounters with God in worship brought David from soul-thirst to soul-satisfaction. Worship sustains our souls, especially when we’re slogging our way through a spiritual desert. Meditating on who God is and what God has done are the worship themes that satisfy the deep thirst of our souls. We who live on this side of the New Testament have so much more to “cling” to in this respect than David did. We see the character of God as revealed in the person of Jesus; and we see the actions of God in the self-sacrificing love of Jesus on the cross and the empty tomb on the other side of death. May we begin each day with the sentiment expressed in Psalm 63, looking forward to whatever God has in store. May we thank God for the gift of the water of life, purchased at great cost, but offered freely to us all. Because of this, our souls will never be thirsty again.
This Week’s Psalm Reflection
O God, you are my God whom I seek; for you my flesh pines and my soul thirsts like the earth, parched, lifeless and without water.
Thus have I gazed toward you in the sanctuary to see your power and your glory, for your kindness is a greater good than life; my lips shall glorify you.
Thus will I bless you while I live; lifting up my hands, I will call upon your name. As with the riches of a banquet shall my soul be satisfied, and with exultant lips my mouth shall praise you.
You are my help, and in the shadow of your wings I shout for joy. My soul clings fast to you; your right hand upholds me.
