THIS WEEK: San Francisco continues its four-game road swing with a short trip to the State’s capital to face Sacramento State. The Hornets and Dons will tip at 7 p.m. at the Hornets Nest.

LAST OUTING: USF competed at the Holiday Inn Express – Midtown Tournament in Albuquerque, New Mexico, going 1-1. The Dons fell in the opening game to New Mexico, 73-38, before rebounding to defeat Rhode Island 87-76. Against the Rams, San Francisco had four score 10-or more points including three with 15-plus. Katy Keating paced USF with 19 points, while Kelly Jo Mullaney added 18 and Donnisha Taylor, 17.

LOOKING AHEAD: USF will return home for the first time in nearly three weeks as they host UC Santa Barbara Sunday at 2 p.m. at War Memorial Gym.

OFFENSE HEATS UP AGAINST RAMS: USF put up 87 points against Rhode Island Saturday as part of the Holiday-Inn Express Midtown Tourna-ment in Albuquerque. The 87 points is the most points for USF since the Dons defeated Santa Clara 88-73, Feb. 23, 2008. The program record for points in a game is 105, 101 when playing on the road.

BIG SECOND HALF LIFTS DONS OVER RAMS: USF scored 55 points in the second half of the contest against Rhode Island, falling just five points shy of the school record for second half points. The program mark for second half points – 60 – was set Jan. 12, 1980 against Pennsylvania. USF has surely been a second half team this season, scoring sixty more points total in the second half than they have the first half. The Dons have scored 122 first half points and 185 in the second half.

MULLANEY NAMED TO ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM: Kelly Jo Mullaney was named to the 2010 Holiday Inn Express-Midtown Tournament All-Tournament team after leading the Dons to a 1-1 weekend in Albuquerque. Mullaney posted a career-weekend in New Mexico, scoring 11.0 points per game. Against Rhode Island, the senior guard exploded for 18 points with four rebounds, two assists and two steals as the Dons won 87-76.

BOGGS TIES CAREER-HIGH, AGAIN: Sophomore guard Ashley Boggs tied a career high with nine points at Cal State Fullerton two weeks ago…and she did it again against New Mexico last Friday. Funny thing, prior to the week, the last time Boggs’ scored nine points was against...Cal State Fullerton. This season against the Titans, the guard went 4-for-6 with a 3-pointers off the bench and four rebounds, while recording a block. As a freshman, Boggs went 3-for-7 with a 3-pointer and two free throws. This season, in exhibition play, Boggs scored what would have been a career high with 18 points against Sonoma State. Against New Mexico, Boggs went 2-for-7 with a 3-pointer an d a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe.

KEATING POSTS CAREER NIGHT FOR DONS: Katy Keating turned in one of the greatest games in her career against San Jose State, setting a career-high for points scored with 20. The junior was hot from the get-go, hitting two three-point baskets in the opening five minutes. The native of Santa Monica finished the contest with six baskets from beyond the arc, connecting on all but one attempt. The six trey’s fell one basket short of the school, and War Memorial Gym, record of three-point baskets made in a game. Keating also added six rebounds, an assist and two steals against the Spartans.

JENNIFER AZZI ERA: This season marks the beginning of a new era on the Hilltop, as women’s basketball legend Jennifer Azzi begins her ap-pointment as head coach. Azzi, who was named to the helm of the program in April, brings an unprecedented wealth of basketball experience to the program. The 2009 Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame inductee played five seasons in the WNBA, was a founding member of the American Basketball League (ABL), played overseas and enjoyed an All-American collegiate career at Stanford. Internationally, Azzi was a member of the USA Basketball Senior National Team from 1990-91 and 1993-98. A key member of the United States gold medal-winning 1996 Olympic Team that concluded a perfect 60-0 season with an 8-0 record during the Olympic Games in Atlanta, Azzi played on 13 USA National Teams, compiling a mark of 114-14. She also medaled three times at the World Championships, claiming gold in 1998 and 1990, while earning a bronze in 1994.

NEW COACHING STAFF UNVEILED: Joining new head coach Jennifer Azzi this season on the bench will be associate head coach Katy Steding and assistant coaches Molly Marrin and Blair Hardiek. Steding, an Olympic gold medalist and a NCAA National Champion at Stanford University, joins the Dons from Columbia University. Prior to coaching the Lions, Steding spent a season as an assistant coach for the Atlanta Dream of the WNBA and seven years at Warner Pacific. Hardiek comes to the Hilltop after a year at San Francisco State and a four-year playing career at Missouri. Marrin, who is in her third year at USF, is entering her eighth season as an assistant coach at the Division I level – all as the recruiting coordinator.

MULLANEY FINISHES ODYSSEY ON THE HILLTOP: Kelly Jo Mullaney joins the Dons this season, coming to the Hilltop for just one season as a senior transfer from Colorado. Mullaney will be eligible immediately to play for the Dons, have being awarded an appeal from the NCAA. The native of Minneapolis began her career at Colorado State, before transferring to Colorado for the past two seasons. With the Rams, the guard averaged a team-high 14.5 points in 13 games and a dozen starts. During her tenure in Boulder, she averaged 4.6 points and 2.1 rebounds per game. Mul-laney redshirted the 2007-08 season at Colorado after transferring from Colorado State.

ALE GAINING GROUND: Junior guard Rheina Ale enters the 2010-11 season looking to gain ground in the USF career-record books. The native of Carson, Calif., currently holds three spots in three career top-10 record books. Ale sits third in free throw %, shooting at a .806 (183-227) clip from the line, Carey Sauer (1999-04) holds the record, shooting 87.4% (382-437). The 2010 captain, Ale, is tied for sixth in 3-pointers made, with 102. She is currently tied with Toni Russell (2001-05) and is on pace to break Shay Rollins (2005-09) school record of 205. Ale is tenth in 3-point field goal %, hitting 102-of-288 for a .354 clip.

SECOND HALF RALLY PUSHES DONS PAST RAMS

(ALBUQUERQUE, NM) - Four Dons scored in double-digits Saturday as the University of San Francisco women’s basketball team up-ended Rhode Island as part of the Holiday-Inn Express Midtown Tournament at The Pit in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

San Francisco (2-3) and Rhode Island (3-3) played a tight close half, taking a 32-32 tie into the locker room. In the opening 20 minutes, the score changed side nine times and was tied twice. Neither team boasted a larger lead than four throughout the entire half.

Down by four with two minutes in the half, USF’s momentum began to change as a jumper by Rheina Ale brought the Dons within two, 30-28. Kelly Jo Mullaney added a pair at 1:22 with a jumper to tie the score. Following two free throws by Rhode Island to take the lead, Mullaney got the ball, running the length of the court. The senior guard made the basket on the fast break as the buzzer sounded to head into halftime tied.

Rhode Island controlled the first part of the second half, thanks to sharp shooting from beyond the arc. The Rams went up by as many as four thanks to four 3-point baskets in the first nine minutes.

USF took control of the game at 11:07 as Mel Khlok rattled off a basket to put the Dons up 50-48. The Green and Gold held onto their lead for the remainder of the contest thanks much to the efforts of Khlok. The sophomore guard scored all eight of her points in the next four minutes.

San Francisco flipped a switch from Friday’s game, committing just six turnovers the entire contest and scoring 21 points off of URI’s 17 miscues.

Leading the Dons charge on the evening was junior Katy Keating with 19 points, four rebounds and two assists.

Mullaney added a career-high 18 points with four boards, two assists and two steals. Ale added seven assists, a career high with 11 points. Joining the trio with a double-digit scoring effort was Donnisha Taylor, who tallied 17 points with five rebounds and a steal.

USF shot 46.9 percent from the field going 15-fo-32, including hitting 18 baskets at a 58.1 percent clip in the second half.

URI was paced by Megan Shoniker with 28 points and six assists. Four Rams, including Shoniker, recorded 10 or more points.
