ON TAP: Tuesday, the San Francisco women’s basketball team plays its final non-conference contest of the 2009-10 season as it opens the 2010 calendar hosting Sacramento State at War Memorial Gym. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. on the Hilltop.

LAST TIME ON THE FLOOR: The Dons dropped two contests as part of the Villanova Wildcat Holiday Classic. In the opening tilt, USF fell to host Villanova 67-35 before dropping a 60-51 decision to Loyola Maryland Tuesday.

NEXT ON THE SCHEDULE: San Francisco will open the West Coast Conference season Friday as it makes the short trip across the Bay to face Saint Mary’s in Moraga at 7 p.m. Sunday, the Dons will continue the opening weekend of WCC action with a 2 p.m. tilt at San Diego.

3,255 SETS DECADE-HIGH ATTENDANCE MARK: Tuesday, when the Dons hosted nationally-ranked Ten-nessee, 3,255 fans packed into War Memorial Gym. The attendance marked the highest total this decade for a women’s basketball game. The only other time since 1999 that USF cracked the 3,000 mark for a women’s game when 3,212 watched the Dons fall 75-64 to regional foe Stanford (11/19/99) in the season opener. On the flip side, the crowd marked the smallest attendance for a Tennessee game, either home or away, since January 31, 2008, when the Lady Vols played at Ole Miss in front of 3,120 fans.

TAYLOR GRABS THREE-YEAR HIGH FOR REBOUNDS: Donnisha Taylor posted 17 rebounds against Cal Poly, marking a career-high, while also posting the most rebounds for a Don since the 2006-07 season. Former Don Nikki Warren pulled down 21 boards against Colorado State in a 62-51 victory, November 17, 2006. The San Francisco record for rebounds in a single game is held by Linda Walsh, who grabbed 25 rebounds against Cal Poly, December 15, 1981.

ALE ERUPTS IN THE SECOND HALF, FALLS SHORT OF RECORD: Rheina Ale erupted in the second half of the contest at Pacific, scoring 24 points in the final 20 minutes. Ale posted just one point in the first half, after only playing three minutes due to two early fouls. The 24 second half points is one point shy of the school record for points in the second half, set by Dominique Carter in 2008. Ale was a perfect 6-for-6 from the field, including five 3-pointers, to mark the second time in her career the native of Carson has been perfect from the field in her career.

BRUMFIELD TALLIES CAREER-HIGH: After posting a then-career high four points during three games this season, junior transfer point guard Brittany Brumfield exploded for nine points against Loyola Maryland. Brumfield added a rebound and four assists. The junior went 4-for-8 from the field while also sinking a free throw in the Dons’ 60-51 loss as part of the Villanova Holiday Tounament.

KHLOK PROVIDES STRONG DEPTH OFF THE BENCH: Freshman Mel Khlok has been a threat off the bench for the Dons this season, including recording her first career double-double at Pacific. Twice this season, against Utah State and at Pacific, the native of Sacramento has scored a dozen points as a reserve. For the season, the guard averages 5.2 points, 4.1 rebounds in 18.4 minutes of action per tilt. Against Washington State on December 19, Khlok came off the bench to record a team-high eight rebounds.

PRESENCE IN THE POST EARNS VICTORIES: One of the keys to victories this season has been USF’s junior forward Donnisha Taylor. In the four San Francisco victories this season, the native of Oakland has averaged 14.3 points with 8.8 rebounds, including two double-doubles. On the flip side, during the Dons’ losses, Taylor has averaged just 7.7 points and 6.8 rebounds.

DONS’ VIKING VOYAGE: San Francisco took its game overseas in May, embarking on an 11-day, five game tour of Scandinavia. During the trip, the Dons visited Stockholm, Sweden, Oslo, Norway and Copenhagen, Denmark, facing off against some of the top’s women’s basketball programs in the region. USF finished the trip with a 3-2 record, including a victory against the top team in Norway and two victories against the Danish National Team.

ANTON EARNS CAREER HIGH: Heidi Anton came off the bench against BYU to post a career high 11 points at Hawai’i. In nine minutes of action, Anton hit 4-of-5 from the field with three free throws, including scor-ing five straight for the Dons. She also added an assist and a steal. Prior to her 11 points, Anton’s previous high was five points.

GaMe #16 - lOyOla (MD.)(Villnova, Pa.) - The USF women’s basketball team closed out the 2009 calendar year Tuesday with a 60-51 loss to Loyola (Md.) at the Villanova Holiday Classic in Villanova, Pa. The game marked the finale of the tourna-ment for the Dons, who dropped a decision to host Villanova Monday to open the four-team event.

With the loss, San Francisco falls to 4-12 on the season, while Loyola improves to 5-6.

In the opening half, the Dons went up by as many as five before allowing the Greyhounds to come back and knot the score 27-27 at halftime. Down 11-8, San Francisco opened an 8-0 run, highlighted by a pair of three’s by Katy Keating, to take a 16-11 lead at 8:52. The lead would change times a couple of times again before the Dons would go up, once again, by five points, 25-20, with 4:22 remaining. The Greyhounds held USF to just two points over the remainder of the half, going on a 7-2 run to close the opening 20 minutes.

Loyola took no time jumping out to a lead in the second half, holding San Francisco to five points in the opening seven minutes to take a nine point, 41-32 edge. The Greyhounds maintained the lead throughout the second stanza, only allowing the Dons to come within seven with a minute remaining. Turnovers proved to be the costly difference in the half for San Francisco, as Loyola turned 11 costly USF errors into 15 points.

It was a tale of halves for the Dons, who shot at a 37.5 percent clip in the opening half before converting on just 9-of-31 in the second half, hitting 29.0 percent of shots. For the game, the Dons recorded a 33.3 field goal percentage.

Rheina Ale paced USF with a dozen points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals. Junior guard Brittany Brumfield fell just short of double-digits thanks to career-high nine points, while dishing out four assists.

Junior Donnisha Taylor added eight points, while matching Ale’s eight rebounds for a team-high. The USF bench tallied 17 points, including 15 in the first half, and was anchored by six points from Keating. Forward freshman Bailey Barbour added four with a block and steal off the bench.

During the Summer, USF Athletics honors a remarkable past and prepares for the next gen-eration with a major renovation in War Memorial Gym. Among a number of improvements was the first floor replacement done since the arena opened in 1958-59. Along with the new hardwood flooring, the gym is sporting a fresh court design and a new coat of paint from floor to ceiling. The wooden bleachers on the ends of the court were replaced, and new lights were installed.

Upon entering War Memorial Gym, fans will notice a number of other changes, starting with new entrances with to the arena, new retired jerseys hanging above the court, as well as new NCAA and conference championship banners, celebrating the legacy and tradition of USF’s basketball and volleyball programs.

The south lobby of the gym underwent construction as well to create a more permanent con-cessions area.
