1 OVERALL: 11-1 OPENING TIP OVERVIEW ~ St. Bonaventure – Receiving Votes in the national polls for the second straight week – will look to continue its best-ever start to a season against Villanova in the opening day of the Monmouth University Hawks Holiday Classic. Following the contest with the 9-2 Wildcats – who are also Receiving Votes in the polls – the Bonnies will face either Norfolk State or host Monmouth on Friday’s final day. ~ The outing against Villanova will be the first neutral-site game of the year for SBU. Villanova leads the all-time series, 1-0, by virtue of a 66-61 overtime decision in 1995. The Bonnies have never played Norfolk State or Monmouth. ~ Bonaventure has won seven straight games, and with a victory against ‘Nova will be winners of eight consecutive contests for just the second time in program history. Only the 2009-10 team, which started 11-0, has a longer winning streak than this year’s club. ~ Junior Chelsea Bowker has been instrumental in the last few wins during the streak, finishing with game-high point totals each of the last two times out – 19 vs. Marist and 15 at Colgate. In the last two games, the Ohio native is 9-for-12 (75 percent) from 3-point range, and her 34 total points account for 33 percent of her entire year’s scoring (103). Over the last four games – in which she has started three in place of senior Megan Van Tatenhove (concussion-like symptoms) – Bowker has raised her points per game average from 6.3 to 8.6 – now third- best on the Bona roster. ~ With at least one win this week, the Brown and White will own a program-best seven victories in the month of December. Currently five teams – including last year’s – have won six games in December, but none has ever reached the seven-win plateau. ~ St. Bona and Villanova are two of the best ball-protecting teams in the nation. In the most recent NCAA rankings, the Wildcats ranked first in the nation at 11.3 turnovers per game, while the Bonnies were third at 12 per game. However, since that Dec. 19 ranking, ‘Nova and SBU have each decreased their turnovers per game to 11.2 and 11.6 per outing, respectively. ~ In its most recent win against Colgate on Dec. 22, Bonaventure had five double-figure scorers for the first time since Jan. 2, 2009 at Bryant. The Bonnies did that without second-leading scorer and Atlantic 10 Preseason First Team pick Van Tatenhove playing. The balanced scoring attack has become a theme for this team, as already this year seven different players have reached double-digit scoring in a game. However, just once all season has an SBU player scored 20+ points in a game as Jessica Jenkins tallied 23 in a win at West Virginia Nov. 18. ~ Van Tatenhove – who is questionable as she recovers from a head injury suffered Dec. 10 against Buffalo – is just six rebounds shy of 500 for her career. With those six caroms, Van Tatenhove will become just the ninth member of the 1,000 Point & 500 Rebound Club. HEAD COACH: HARRY PERRETTA

Now in his 34th year as head coach of the Villanova women’s basketball pro-gram, Harry Perretta has established himself as one of the most respected and knowledgeable coaches in the country. A true teacher both on and off the court, Perretta strives to have a positive influence on his student-athletes not only as basketball players, but also as people.

Perretta begins the 2011-12 season just two wins shy of an impressive mile-stone. He enters the year just two victories shy of career win number 600 with a career record of 598-378. Perretta will become the 35th coach in the history of women’s basketball at any level to reach the 600 win plateau, including the 22nd to accomplish the feat at the Division I level. He will also become just the seventh Division I coach to record all 600 victories at one school.

The 598 wins place him 23rd on the winningest active collegiate coaching list, and ranks him as the all-time winningest coach in the history of Villanova basketball for both men and women. Since the beginning of the 2000-01 season, Perretta has compiled a 184-120 record.

During the 2008-09 season, Perretta led the Wildcats to the NCAA Tourna-ment for the ninth time in his Villanova career. This marked the ninth post-season appearance in the previous 10 years for the Wildcats. After playing in the 2000 WNIT, Villanova went to four consecutive NCAA Tournaments from 2001-2004 before playing in the WNIT in 2005, 2006 and 2008. Picked to finish 10th in the pre-season Big East Conference coaches poll, the Wildcats tallied a 10-6 league mark and finished tied for fourth in the conference standings. For his efforts in 2008-09, Perretta was named the Big East Con-ference Co-Coach of the Year. This is the third time in his career that he has garnered Big East Coach of the Year distinction.

Three TiMeS The chariTySt. Bonaventure boasts three of the best five free-throw shooters in A-10 history in terms of made free throws in a career. Hilary Waltman, who gradu-ated in 1999, ranks second on the all-time conference list with 588, Sue Shay, ’92, ranks third with 524 and Dana Mitchell, ’10, ranks fifth with 474. By owning three of the top five free throw shooters in a respective con-ference, Bonaventure is the only school in Division I history which holds that honor.

3-pOinT uWith 26 more made 3-pointers this season, Jessica Jenkins will not only own the program record in that category, but also the A-10 record. Jenkins cur-rently has 266 made 3’s in her career. The school – and conference – record is 291, held by Suzie Dailer. Dailer, who played at Bona’s from 1992-95, actually shares the all-time league mark with Cathy Jones of George Wash-ington. Additionally, 2006 SBU grad Stefanie Collins currently ranks third on that list with 288 3’s. If Jenkins hits 26 more 3’s, St. Bonaventure will become the only school in the nation with three of the top four 3-point shooters (in terms of made field goals) in any respective conference in women’s basketball Division I history.

aMOng The naTiOn’S eliTeSt. Bonaventure finished the 2011-12 campaign ranked among the nation’s best in several statistical categories. The Bonnies ranked in the top-10 in 3-point field-goal percentage (6th/38%) and turnovers per game (7th/13.8 per game). The Brown and White also ranked inside the top-50 in three other categories: scoring defense (23rd/55.2 per game); free-throw percentage (31st/74.4%); 3-point field goals per game (44th/6.8 per game).

a ‘BOna’ fide leagueThe A-10 finished the 2010-11 campaign ranked 7th among the 31 Division I conferences in the official NCAA RPI Report, ranking behind only the “Big 6” – Big 12, ACC, BIG EAST, SEC, Big Ten and Pac-10 (now Pac-12). However, no conference except the BIG EAST had MORE teams finish in the top 80 of the RPI than the A-10. The A-10 had eight schools in the top-80 – the same amount as the Big 12, Big Ten, ACC and SEC. St. Bonaventure finished 70th, and it was joined by Xavier (10), Temple (35), Charlotte (49), Dayton (50), Saint Joseph’s (68) and Richmond (77).

1,000-pOinT duOSenior Jessica Jenkins became the 19th member of the 1,000 Point Club during a 23-point performance against West Virginia Nov. 18. Jenkins joined classmate Megan Van Tatenhove on the list as the Wisconsin native became the 18th member of the club last year in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Championship.

defenSive prOweSSFor the second consecutive year in 2010-11, St. Bonaventure led the A-10 in scoring defense. SBU held its opponents to an average of 55.2 points per game, one season after leading the A-10 at 54.1 points per outing. While five other schools in history have led the conference in scoring defense back-to-back years, no school has been as stringent as the Brown and White. The 54.6 combined scoring defense average the last two years by the Bonnies is THE BEST by any school in consecutive years in the history of the A-10.

3-pOinT efficiency aT iTS aBSOluTe BeSTFor the fourth consecutive season in 2010-11, St. Bonaventure led the Atlantic 10 in 3-point field goal percentage, connecting at a 38.2-percent clip (224-587). By leading the A-10 in 3-point shooting percentage four straight years, St. Bonaventure is the only school in the history of Division I women’s basketball to lead a conference in that category for four straight seasons. In 2009-10, the Bonnies shot 38.5 percent from 3-point range; in 2008-09 they shot 36.4 percent and in 2007-08 they also shot 36.4 percent. No other school in the A-10 has accomplished this feat more than two years in a row.

defenSe lOckS dOwn in 2nd half, BOna winS 7Th STraighTHAMILTON, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure women’s basketball team (11-1) held Colgate (2-11) to just 10 points over the final 13 minutes as the Bonnies put five players in double-figure scoring en route to their seventh straight win Thursday after-noon, 68-49.

The win moved Bona’s record to 11-1, tying it with the 2009-10 club for the best start to a campaign in program history. The victory also gave the Bonnies their sixth road victory of the season to become the only team in the nation with a 6-0 road mark.

Redshirt senior Armelia Horton and junior Chelsea Bowker paced the Bona offense with 15 points each. Se-nior Jessica Jenkins and junior Alaina Walker both contributed 11 points, and sophomore CeCe Dixon added 10 as the Bonnies had a quintet of double-figure scorers for the first time since Jan. 2, 2009 against Bryant.

Up just one point, 40-39, with 13 minutes left, the Brown and White went on a 12-2 run to open up a 52-41 lead with 7:14 remaining. Horton served as the main catalyst during that stretch, tallying seven of her season-best 15 points in a span of three minutes.

Bonaventure jumped out to a 17-2 start following a Jenkins’ steal and transition pull-up 3 from the top of the arc. However, it was all Colgate the rest of the half as the Raiders closed on an extended 26-10 run to take a 28-27 lead into the halftime break.

Trailing at the half on the road for just the second time this year, the Bonnies got even further behind at the start of second frame, 35-30, but gradually fought back and on a Walker layup took a 38-37 lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

pOSSeSSiOn iS nine-TenThSThe Bonnies have committed just 139 turnovers on the year – third-best in the nation – but they are even more stingy with the ball when the game is on the line. Of those 139 giveaways, 85 have come in the first half while 54 have come in the final 20 minutes. Additionally, in the final five minutes the Bonnies have committed just five turnovers, and in their six road contests in the final five minutes, they have given the ball away just one time.

cluTch laTeMuch like the late-game possession, Bonaventure connects from the free throw line in pressure moments. Currently 14th in the nation at 78.5 percent as a team from the free throw line, the Bonnies are 41-53 (77.4 percent) in the final five minutes of games while their opponents are just 24-37 (64.9 percent). Even more impressive, the Bonnies are 21-27 (77.8 percent) from the line in the last five minutes of their road games, while those home teams are just 12-21 (57.1 percent).

ScOring MarginThe Bonnies have a scoring margin of +13.4 on the year – one of only two A-10 teams with a positive double-figure scoring margin. SBU averages 64.2 points per game and allows just 50.8. Two SEC schools, South Carolina and LSU, are the only teams in the nation with a greater scoring margin which average fewer points per game than Bonaventure. The Gamecocks score just 63.1 per game and allow 44.1 to create their +19 margin, while the Tigers average 63.4 per game and allow just 46.4 for a +17 margin.

nO SOphOMOre SluMp hereSophomore CeCe Dixon already recorded five double-figure scoring games this season, as last

year she reached that plateau just once. Dixon is the fourth-leading scorer on the team at 7.8 per game, and has scored 93 points this year after netting 99 all of last year.

diverSifying her gaMeSenior Jessica Jenkins – one of the best 3-point shooters in the nation – has gradually diversified her scoring game since stepping foot on campus. As a freshman, 77.4 percent of Jenkins’ 151 points came off 3-pointers. She lowered that percentage to 71.7 her sophomore year, decreased it even further to 69.2 her junior campaign and this season it’s at an all-time low of 66.2 percent. What’s more impressive is that Jenkins has increased her scoring average and 3-pointers made each season. She’s just 26 3-pointers shy of breaking the school and Atlantic 10 Conference 3-point record of 291 in a career.

Big 4 dOMinanceSt. Bonaventure has won 15 straight games over Big 4 rivals. The 15 straight victories is the longest such streak in the history of Big 4 women’s basketball. The Bonnies have not lost to a Big 4 school since Nov. 19, 2006, when the University at Buffalo defeated them at the St. Bonaventure Shootout, 67-59.

STreakingWhen St. Bonaventure opens A-10 play in Jan-uary, it will do so having the second-longest unbeaten streak in league games. After get-ting off to a 5-5 start in the conference last year, the Bonnies won all four of their final A-10 contests to finish tied for 3rd with a 9-5 mark. Xavier, which concluded its A-10 slate unblemished at 14-0, is the only school which has a longer unbeaten streak in league play.

With a 79-55 win against Morgan State on Nov. 20, Bonaventure got off to a 4-0 start for the sixth time in school history. Five of those six occasions have come in the last seven years. The only other season a Bona team got off to a 4-0 start was the 1992-93 club.

dOuBle-digiT TrendWith its victory against Marist on Dec. 18, the Brown and White extended its streak to six straight years of double-digit non-conference wins. The stretch is currently the longest in program history. The only other season aside from the previous five years that SBU claimed double-digit non-league wins was 1992-93 when it won 11.

naTiOnal Tv expOSureSt. Bonaventure will appear on national TV two times during the regular season, as both occasions will air on CBS Sports Network. The first comes in a contest at La Salle on Jan. 28 at 1 p.m., and the second will be at home against perennial power Xavier on Feb. 18 at 2 p.m. The matchup with the Muske-teers will also be Senior Day for the program.

She’S nOT prOBaBleJessica Jenkins has started 78 straight games, dating back to the beginning of her sophomore season in 2009-10. Megan Van Tatenhove had started 58 consecutive con-tests, dating back to the middle of the 2009-

10 year, but had that streak stopped Dec. 16 against Niagara due to a head injury.

dOwnTOwn clinicSt. Bonaventure set a program record by mak-ing 224 3-pointers last season, shattering the old mark of 192 set during the 2008-09 season. That total ranks second in the all-time A-10 record book, behind only the 256 made by Xavier during the 2000-01 season. Additionally, the club connected at a 38.2-per-cent clip (224-587), making it the second-highest 3-point field-goal percentage season in program history. The 2009-10 year with a 38.5-percent clip was the only higher season.

nyc pipelineThe 2011-12 Bonnies boast four play-ers from New York City, all from Queens and Harlem: freshman Tatiana Wilson; sophomores CeCe Dixon and Doris Ortega; redshirt senior Armelia Horton. Addition-ally, Dixon, Ortega and Horton all went to the same high school, Murry Bergtraum.

all-TiMe win leaderThe 2011 women’s basketball senior class of Amanda Johnson and Cara Gustafson graduated as the all-time winningest class in St. Bonaventure basketball history – ei-ther men’s or women’s – with their 85 vic-tories from 2007-2011. However, current redshirt senior Armelia Horton supassed that total with a win in the season opener against No. 25/rv St. John’s and now is the all-time winningest player in St. Bona histo-ry, currently owning 95 wins. Tim Waterman, who played for the men’s team from 1975-79, previously held the record with 81 wins.

career afTernOOnSenior Jessica Jenkins established a ca-reer high in points when she netted 33 in the regular-season finale last year in a win against Charlotte. As part of those 33 points, the Marion, Ohio product set a pro-gram record by knocking down nine 3-point-ers. Not only did that give her the school record, but it also tied her with three others for the A-10 record for made 3’s in a game.

leaderS Once againFor the second straight year in 2010-11, St. Bonaventure led the A-10 in free-throw percentage, connecting at a 74.4-percent

clip. In 2009-10, the Bonnies shot 79.8 percent from the charity stripe, and that percentage ranks as the second highest in conference history behind only the 81.5 percent Saint Joseph’s shot in 2000-01. St. Bona is the first school to defend its free-throw percentage crown since Saint Joe’s in 2000-01 and 2001-02. Furthermore, last season was the eighth time in history that the Bonnies have led the A-10 in free-throw percentage, and that is the most of any school in the history of the conference.

BOMBS awayAs a team, St. Bonaventure made 16 3-pointers in its regular-season finale last year against Charlotte, paced by a program-record nine from Jessica Jenkins. That total ranks as the second highest in the history of the A-10 in a single game, bested only by the 17 Xavier knocked down against Mc-Neese State in 2007. However, in conference games only, the 16 3’s by the Bonnies beat the previous record of 14 held by Richmond in a 2008 game against Massachusetts.

inSide-OuT reTurning cOMBOSenior forward Megan Van Tatenhove re-turns as the second-leading scorer in the A-10 after averaging 14.5 points per game

last year, while senior guard Jessica Jenkins re-turns as the leading 3-point shooter in the con-ference after knocking down 100 3’s last cam-paign. However, in conference games only, Van Tatenhove averaged 16.2 points per game, ty-ing her with Dayton’s Justine Raterman as the league’s highest-returning scorer in that cate-gory. Jenkins averaged 13.1 points per outing, making her and Van Tatenhove one of just two sets of returning teammates in the A-10 who averaged 13 or more points per game last year. The other is the senior duo of Shey Peddy (14.1) and Kristen McCarthy (13.2) from Temple.

nO freeBieS, nO prOBleMSt. Bonaventure was the only school in the A-10 last year to play a game and hold its oppo-nent without a made free throw. Against UTSA on Dec. 21, the Roadrunners attempted just three free throws – also a season low for an opponent by an A-10 team – and made none of them. On the other side, the Bonnies made 14-of-20 en route to a 46-37 win – the few-est points the club held a team to all season.

did yOu knOw?St. Bonaventure is one of only three schools in A-10 history with two players who have scored 2,000 or more points. Hilary Walt-man, 1996-99, checks in at No. 7 on the all-time list with 2,106 points, while Dana Mitchell, 2007-10, is No. 11 with 2,011 points. Xavier, which occupies the No. 4 and 5 slots, and Saint Joseph’s, which owns the No. 3 and 8 positions, are the only other A-10 schools with multiple 2,000-point scorers.

leader By a MileJessica Jenkins returns as the leading 3-point shooter in the A-10, and she’s the lead-ing returner by a long stretch. Jenkins hit a program-record 100 3’s last year to lead the conference. The next closest returning 3-point shooter in the league is Duquesne’s Alex Gensler who knocked down 67 3-point-ers last season – 33 fewer than Jenkins.

lOve frOM eSpnIn the most recent ESPN.com Mid-Major Rank-ings, Graham Hays ranks the Bonnies 4th among the non-BCS conference teams. Here’s what Hays had to say: “The only loss came in November at the hands of Delle Donne and Delaware (and she was at least forced to take 26 shots to get her 26 points in that game), and a win against Marist adds another prize to a list that includes victories at St. John’s and West Virginia. It’s time to take the Bon-nies seriously in the crowded Atlantic 10 race. This week’s game against Villanova will likely have a lower score than most bowl games – and potentially some hockey games – but like some of Harry Perretta’s best teams, Jim Crow-ley’s Bonnies are masters of their own style.”

rOad warriOrSWith its win against Colgate on Dec. 22, St. Bonaventure extended its road record to 6-0 to start the 2011-12 season for the first time in program history. Bonaventure has had a winning road record in each of the last four seasons. The only other year beside the last four that happened was when the 1991-92 club went 7-6 away from the Reilly Center. Over the last four years, Bona is an impressive 40-25 on the road.

prOgraM hiSTOryThe win over No. 25/rv St. John’s on Nov. 12 was the program’s first ever road victory against a nationally ranked team and just the third over a nationally ranked team in school history. The other two triumphs both came at home – against No. 14/13 George Washington, 63-60, on Feb. 16, 2008, and opposite No. 21/24 Michigan State, 63-52, on Dec. 7, 2008. The win over the Red Storm was also the program’s first over a BCS opponent since it won at Wisconsin, 56-51, in the Third Round of the WNIT on March 26, 2009.

gOOd frOM The STarTWith its win over No. 25/rv St. John’s on Nov. 12, the Brown and White has now won seven straight season openers, dating back to a 73-70 loss to Colgate to kick off the 2004-05 year. Furthermore, St. Bona has not lost a road game to start the season since head coach Jim Crowley’s first year at the helm of the Bonnies in 2000-01 – a 97-75 loss against Cincinnati. The current streak of seven consecutive season-opening victories is the longest in program history.

The gang’S all BackSt. Bonaventure returns all five starters and 92 percent of its offense from a team which went 21-12 and finished 9-5 in the Atlantic 10, advancing to its third straight Women’s National Invitation Tournament. The Bonnies finished tied for 3rd in the conference – their best-ever showing in the A-10 – and won 20+ games for the third consecutive season. Bonaventure is now one of just five A-10 schools which has won 20 or more games three straight years, joining Temple, Xavier, Dayton and Duquesne.

a-10 prOgnOSTicaTiOnSDespite returning nearly all its scoring, St. Bonaventure was picked to finish 6th

9

in the A-10 in preseason voting conducted by the league’s 14 head coaches. Senior Megan Van Tatenhove – who enters the year as the A-10’s second-leading returning scorer – was named to the Preseason First Team. Classmate Jessica Jenkins – who needs just 26 more 3-pointers for the conference record – was tabbed to the Preseason Third Team.

TOugh SleddingA challenging non-conference slate precludes the always-difficult A-10 docket as the Bonnies have already faced seven teams which made postseason appearances last year, including three which advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. The Bonnies are an impressive 6-1 against those teams, including a resounding 3-0 mark against schools which went to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament last season.

faMiliar fOeSOf St. Bonaventure’s 15 non-conference games, 11 are against teams the Bonnies squared off with last year. SBU went 7-4 in those games last year, but this year it has avenged all those losses as it defeated No. 25/rv St. John’s in the season opener, won at West Virginia, 56-48, downed Morgan State, 79-55, and defeated Indiana, 65-45.

welcOMe TO The BOna faMilyThe 2011-12 women’s basketball season is in progress, but the team is already building for the future as five players have signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Bonnies beginning in the 2012-13 season. The five who committed to join head coach Jim Crowley’s club are: Kelcie Rombach (Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa Township), Gabby Richmond (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park), Katie Healy (Lancaster, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy), Nyla Rueter (Hagerstown, Ind./Hagerstown) and Hannah Little (Rochester Hills, Mich./Auburn Hills Avondale).

wilSOn faMily aSSiSTance prOgraMThe St. Bonaventure Department of Athletics, in conjunction with University Ministries, has established an as-sistance program to help the family of freshman Tatiana Wilson, whose house in Far Rockaway, Queens, was destroyed by fire early in the morning on Dec. 13.

Wilson’s mother and five younger siblings jumped from their second-story home into the arms of New York City Sanitation Department workers, who saw the flames from a distance and called 911.

Temeka, Wilson’s mother, broke her back while trying to escape, sister Amari, 12, suffered a broken leg and sister Shaina, 17, suffered third-degree burns. The family lost everything in the fire.

University Ministries is accepting cash and checks on behalf of Wilson to help aid the family in its recovery. Checks should be made payable to “St. Bonaventure University,” and the Memo line should read “Wilson Family Assistance Program.”
