Our Approach

The firm was set up in 2012 by Angus Warren, an industry veteran whose career includes 15 years at BP, expanding in 2014 with additional directors bringing a wealth of experience and expertise to clients.

We are based in the UK, but run courses worldwide, particularly in emerging markets. Hundreds of executives and managers have been on our courses – many now being in senior positions in NOCs, Ministries and IOCs.

We know that every firm has different needs; and each individual has different ways of learning. Therefore we take time to understand what those different requirements are, and customize our courses as much as possible. And during the programme itself, we believe it is important delegates learn from each other, so our courses are highly interactive.

Angus Warren founded Warren Business Consulting as an independent E&P management and leadership training company in 2012. Before that he spent 15 years with BP in assignments that included gas exploration and production, oil pipelines and refining in the UK, and leading the commercial effort for BP’s involvement in the Angola LNG Project. His particular specialities include Strategy, Joint Ventures and Negotiations.

David Finlayson has been involved in staff development throughout his 45 year career in the upstream business. Starting as an exploration geophysicist, he worked all over the world with Texaco, Mobil, BNOC/Britoil, and BP before establishing his own consultancy. Most recently he was a Managing Director at IHS and also Deputy Chairman of Brunel University London’s Governing Council.His speciality is E&P Upstream strategy.

Bob Laidler's experience covers all aspects of upstream asset development planning, with particular focus on maximising value through effective project governance. He has worked at Granherne, IHS and Exodus, with many leading IOCs, NOCs and service providers, all over the world. He also advises on due diligence in dispute resolution, IPOs and M&A. Helping managers to understand effective project governance is a fundamental part of his work.

Rob Marshall applies external scenario analysis to corporate strategy and investment evaluation. Currently he collaborates with IHS, helping clients integrate country risk assessments in their financial evaluations. Clients are global players in oil & gas, mining, power generation, mobile telecom, covering multi-billion dollar ventures in Brazil pre-salt, Venezuela heavy oil, West Africa iron ore and Asia hydroelectric. He has always considered talent development to be a vital part of his work, with training and education closely aligned to consulting. His particular speciality is country risk.

John Weston has worked with BP, Gaffney Cline Associates and Schlumberger on numerous projects in Europe, South America, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and Africa. His experience includes evaluating licence round bids, discoveries and field developments, M&As, CPRs and reserve audits plus bespoke work for NOCs and Majors in evaluating regions. He also managed Reserves Certification for Petrobras for their NYSE IPO. In the last decade John has built and sold an independent oil company in the UK and runs a vibrant consultancy business. His speciality is the management and mitigation of risk in upstream projects.

IN-HOUSE COURSESWe also deliver a range of in-house courses customised to the client’s needs, with a particular expertise in supporting NOCs with their own training programmes. These can be bespoke versions of the public courses, or on specific topics such as Gas and LNG, auditing, international acquisitions or sales. Clients for in-house courses include large NOCs from the Far East and rapidly growing equivalents in West Africa as well as IOCs and service firms such as Genel, Akfel, Energy Logistics, Nordsøfonden, Spitzer Industries, Fox-Davies Capital and Schlumberger.
