The Grapevine February 7, 2010 Issue 6 Woman's Club of Greater New Milford Diane McCaffrey, Editor Hello Again Ladies! Is it just me, or did January fly by? They say that time flies when you're having fun, so the next few months should speed by as well. Coming up in March is our first annual Penny Plus Auction. It will be on Saturday, March 27th. Diane McCaffrey, Carol Immohr, Patty Murphy and committee are hard at work on this new fundraising effort. Please offer your support to them ASAP. Plans are also underway for another new project (and it's a BIG one!) It's the Woman's Club game show, to be held later this year. It will involve a lot of members of the New Milford community and should result in extensive publicity for the Woman's Club (as well as large amounts of money being raised for several charities). Evelyn LeCates is heading up this effort and needs our feedback! Speak with her about how you can help. Also new in 2010 is our Blog. Thank you to Diane M for creating this wonderful and informational site. The Woman's Club of Greater New Milford's blog address is: http://wcgnmblog.wordpress.com/ Thank you to all committee chairs who submitted their reports. Ellen and I compiled them and sent them all in in January. These reports are very important because they create a history for our club and also make us eligible for awards at both District Day and State Convention. We've got a lot ahead of us, so let's get to work! Wendy & Ellen A Message From Our Presidents

Every March, we hold an Arts and Crafts contest at our meeting. Whether you are a photographer, painter, quilter, knitter or paper crafter, to name a few, consider entering a project or two that you have completed within the past year in the contest.

Each item is placed in a category, and there is one winner in each category represented. The categories are numerous, so whatever you have made, we can more than likely find a category for it.

The winners are voted on by our club members, and the winning projects will move on to the Arts and Crafts contest at our District Day event in April. On that day, the projects are judged against other projects in the same category made by members of other clubs in our district. The blue ribbon winners from District Day move on to the Arts and Crafts contest at the GFWC State Convention. It is a fun contest, and it is always nice to win praise for your handiwork. If you enter a winning photograph that moves on to the National Photography Award Contest after the state contest, there is the possibility of winning a nominal cash award.

If you wish to view the Arts and Crafts Category list prior to our February meeting, you can do so at the GFWCCT.org site. Once you are at the site, choose MORE INFORMATION, then GFWC/CT Departments, ARTS and then select ARTS & CRAFTS Contest. The category information can also be found on our blog at: http://wcgnmblog.wordpress.com.

Our club is in charge of the Arts and Crafts contest at District Day on April 24th. It would be nice if we had a nice showing of arts and crafts entries in the contest. It is not necessary for you to attend the District Day event to participate in the contest, so don’t let that prevent you from entering something. Other members that are attending will bring your project to District Day for you. If you have any questions, contact Patty Murphy ([email protected]).

Penny Plus! Auction – March 27th It may look like a dinner party but it’s really a Penny Auction Plus! Meeting. There was a great turnout for the meeting and a lot was accomplished. Of course, this group knows how to hold a meeting - - with a great dinner provided by our hostess, Pat Hembrook.

We are still looking for donations for the Penny Plus! Auction. At this time we have over 140 items for the auction - - we would like to have over 200! The day is planned for Saturday, March 27th and it will be held at the First Congregational Church on the green.

In addition to the Auction, we will also have a Treasure Chest, a Book Sale, a White Elephant Sale, Raffles and a Lunch Café!

Updates will be given at the February meeting. Please sign up to help. It’s a fun day! Donations of Auction Items, Raffle Items, Treasure Chest Items, Café donations and Books are being accepted. Please Contact Carol, Patty or Diane to donate.

Laurene Beattie

1. When did you join the Woman’s Club? About six years ago I think. It's hard to remember the exact date since Renee plied us with wine that afternoon!

2. Did you join the Woman’s Club with a friend? Yes, with Judilynn Ferlow-we come as a matched set!

3. Why did you join the woman’s Club? To give back to the community.

4. Have you ever been a board member or chaired an event? Games probably-especially since the Wheel of Fortune came onboard-blue blue be true!

10. What is your motto in life? Good Karma-give it out since it will come back to you.

Happy February! As I write this note, I am thinking of the wonderful times my husband and I have had at the Woman’s Club Sweetheart Ball over the years. It was a wonderful event. While we won’t be sponsoring a Sweatheart Ball this year, we do have two new events to look forward to: The Penny Plus! Auction and the Game Show as well as our old favorites, the Teddy Bear Festival and The Pumpkin Festival. Getting involved with events not only brings benefits to the community but it is also a lot of fun. Get involved and have fun!
