Faith and Mission

The importance of courage I read an interesting article in The Age recently which outlined the findings of a study published in the School Psychology Quarterly. Here’s what it said: “Students facing difficulty at school should take courage—literally. Demonstrating courage in the face of academic challenges and fear can help high school students improve their performance, research show, and it may ultimately help them enjoy school more. Professor Andrew Martin, from the faculty of education and social work at the University of Sydney, examined four approaches to schoolwork— confidence, courage, avoidance and helplessness—among more than 7600 students from 14 Australian high schools.

He found it paid to persevere, that courageous students, those who persisted in the classroom

despite difficulties and anxieties, could do just as well as their confident peers.” The Age, Monday, 22 August 2011

As we celebrated Open Day this week, it gave us an opportunity to showcase the best we at OLSH have to offer and also gave us cause to reflect on the gifts we offer as a College community. To see our wonderful staff in action, preparing displays, rooms and lessons and to see our girls busily cleaning rooms and tidying up yesterday afternoon, the word ‘hospitality’ came to mind. Open Day is gift for us – it is our opportunity to extend an invitation, to welcome visitors, to make room for the ‘other’ and to share generously of our gifts and talents. We open our gates, our hearts, our classrooms and our grounds so that our visitors may experience something of the hospitality of God through us. So while it may be Open Day, it is so much more than that! Our delightful Year 9 girls will have a retreat day today. Held at school and facilitated by our wonderful Year 9 RE team, it promises to be a day of connection, a day of fun and a day to stop and pause to remember God’s gifts and presence in our lives. And next Monday, our Year 11s will also head off on their days of retreat. It will be a wonderful opportunity for them to leave their mobile phones and i‐pods behind, and to spend some time together, with their God. Please keep all our Year 9 and Year 11 girls and the staff who will accompany them in your thoughts and prayers over these coming days. May our gracious God bless us all.

StudentWellbeing Matters OAK Awards: OLSH Acts of Kindness Awards At Tuesday’s assembly we acknowledged in a special way students from Years 10, 11 and 12 who have demonstrated acts of kindness to other members of the school community. Each year level was given an opportunity to nominate a student who they believe goes out of their way for others. Congratulations to the following girls who actively live out the OLSH pillars; who reverence relationships and, through their way of being, touch the hearts of others.

You are the Voice: Parent Survey A huge thank you to all parents who have taken the time out to fill in the survey regarding the College Winter and PE uniforms. Your feedback has been invaluable. Results of both the parent and student surveys will be presented to the girls at lunchtime on Wednesday 31 August in the College Hall. Once the results have been presented a small working party will be created to look at the options suggested. A massive 193 parents have taken the time out to give feedback. Thank you for your suggestions. The results of the parent survey are displayed below. Feedback from the students will be presented in the following newsletter.

Feast of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart and Walkathon Om Friday 9 September we will gather as a school community to celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, and in a special way we walk together to raise awareness and funds for our brothers and sisters in South Africa and the Sudan. Our student leaders are very keen to support our OLSH overseas missions and have thus written a letter to all families that will be emailed to you. Please take the time to read the letter that they have prepared. A reminder to all students and parents—this a compulsory school day and it is an expectation that all students will be in attendance. A medical certificate will be required for those that are sick on the day. Let’s celebrate and join together as one to support our OLSH family! Ms Dina Oro Assistant Principal Student Wellbeing

Tea and conversation for VCE Literature students

In honour of Jane Austen and the study of her novel Emma, VCE Literature students were delighted to attend a tea party. The affair was cordial and conversible and the scones and Laura’s fairy cakes were strenuously recommended. The following are extracts from Creative Responses to Emma composed by students: “Emma Woodhouse, despite her admirable traits and attention seeking ‘charm’, could in no way avoid her petty, pitiful acts of naivety, obliviousness and arrogance. A rather fortunate offspring of the Woodhouse family is she, inheriting wealth and distinction in regards to high esteem. She gained this from her father who, seemingly intellectually deficient, claims social standing by fortune. To be frank, Emma is truly perceived as a self absorbed, pathetic, inferior young lady by members of Highbury, but that is typically muttered behind closed doors and in the absence of either cook or governess. Her tendency to disturb the settled village and lack of approvable behaviour poses as a detriment to that society.” Samantha Cramer 10 Green “For Miss Caitlin Phillips, mistress of fifteen thousand pounds, nothing less would have been expected but an invitation to be “distinguished guest” at the evening party of her neighbour Mr Watson. Indeed, it was common knowledge that her beauty was unrivalled, and her recognition and importance in town unrivalled; and with the recent passing of a doting but rather ineffective father, Miss Phillips now had the liberty to perfect everything in her power. The carriage ordered, Miss Phillips pondered over the events of the past few days. She remembered the public fawning during her father’s funeral, and the presentations of pansies; she had politely declined them, they were “too good, but unnecessary at such an occasion”. In her heart, though, she thought only of how insufferable it was to be presented with such cheap flowers. She would have much preferred something more exquisite.” Sarah Neumann 11 Blue
