Bottom fermented at cold temperatures using Lager
yeast .
Top fermented at warm temperatures using Ale yeast
The world’s most consumed beer style. Originating in Southern Germany, lager translated means ‘to store’. Bottom fermentation allows for cold ageing which gives its smooth clean flavour profile.
The classical wheat beer of Bavaria . Pale, amber or dunkel . I t ’s a lmost always packaged with yeast (hefe) , except for the Kristal l var iety. The banana, c love and smoke characterist ics of this c loudy beer are directly l inked to fermentation and its special ised yeast .
The Belgian style wheat beer is general ly c loudy and lemony in colour. The yeast strains are lessaggressive than its German counterparts . The strong spice and fruit notes come from the addit ion of adjuncts l ike coriander and orange peel .
A very popular style across Europe 100 years ago. Having something of a revival with its toasty/caramel profile, subtle hopping and crisp finish.
A pale lager that has a fresh maltiness and hints of caramel, with aroma and bitterness from the noble Saaz hop. Named after Plzen in the Czech Republic, the town where it was first brewed.
A dark, strong, malty lager beer.
Hop character generally more apparent than in other strong lagers. Typically asscoiated with spring time in Germany
As close as you are going to get to lager. This top fermented ale is a gateway beer to more complex variet ies of craft beer. L ight and refreshing with clean cr isp f inish.
The Belgian version of the anglophi le Golden Ales. Keeps perfumy ester qual it ies to a minimum. Gold in colour due to the use of pi lsner malt . Easy drinking and approachable.

Named because of the use of pale malt rather than the colour, which ranges from golden to amber. Brisk Engl ish hop nose, malt that may be bready or nutty with l ight caramel notes. American versions are robust , usual ly with a generous dose of c lassic American hops.
A high ABV and l iberal use of hops. The original Engl ish version is tamer and rel ies on a malt ier base than its hop-aggressive American cousins. The Belgian variet ies have cleaner bitterness andwell-balanced ABV.
Breathtakingly bitter, dr ipping with resiny hop aromas and high in alcohol .A beer for special occasions.
A ‘catch al l ’ category for high ABV ales that can include barley wines and barrel-aged beers.
Often rather harshly pi l lor ied as a f lat warm beer drunk by old gits . Well , this is hugely unfair to a very complex and tasty style of beer.
Moderate strength ale , a lso known as red ale. There is a wide range of interpretations with a common base of caramel malt iness; the American variet ies are oftenl ightly hopped.
A strong reddish-brown ale. Complex caramel , rais in fruity f lavours with a cr isp f inish.
Strongly resembles Strong Golden Ale but s l ightly darker and somewhat ful ler-bodied. L ightly hopped with fruity aromas.
A harmonious marriage of fruit and beer. A style mastered by the Belgians. In succesful expressions the base beer should not be overwhelmed by the fruit .
Strong mahogany beer with a huge malty nose, often with hints of roastiness. A ful l sweet palate with very l i tt le hops.
A descendant of ancient Engl ish unhopped ales. L ight nutty malt iness with hints of toast . Crisp to medium-bodied. The American version is deeper, r icher and general ly far more hoppy than its Engl ish inspirat ion.
Belgian Strong darkA wide variety of deep r ich f lavours: chocolate, rais ins, caramel , burnt sugar. Rarely any hop character.
PorterThe original black beer, created in London in the 1700’s. Well-balanced aroma, with r ich notes of chocolate, caramel , coffee, nuts and sometimes subtle smokiness, combined with an often dry, even sl ightly acidic f inish.
A black beer that has many sub-styles, Guinness s ingle-handedly revived the popularity of stout in the mainstream. Styles such as Oatmeal and London stouts have their own unique characterist ics , however they al l share a heavy, dominant roasted malt on the nose. The f lavour is often sweet and creamy with a potential ly bitter f inish.
An emerging beer style roughly defined as a beer with IPA-level hopping, relat ively high alcohol and a dist inct toasty dark malt character. Typical ly lacks the roastiness and body of a strong stout and is hoppier than a strong porter. Expressive dry-hoppingis common.
A beer best enjoyed next to a warm f ire on a cold winter ’s night.
