The chronometer was a game changer in the race for naval supremacy. Before it’s invention, sailors could only use the stars, the sun, and coastlines to navigate the seas.

Harrison’s clock allowed sailors to always know what time it was back in London, specifically Greenwich. Ever heard of Greenwich Mean Time? It is the location of the Prime Meridian or zero degrees longitude.

By knowing that time, they could determine their longitudinal location enabling them to pinpoint their location with extreme accuracy. This advantage helped the British to arrive faster and safer at their destinations giving them the edge in the imperial race.

Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, Empress of India

Queen Victoria ruled throughout almost the whole of the 19th century overseeing tremendous changes in industry, science, culture, and empire.

After the Indian Rebellion of 1857, India officially changed from a protectorate to a colony of the British empire.Showing the importance of India to Britain, she added the title of Empress of India to her official title in 1876.

Her reign of 63 years, 7 months, and 2 days is the longest reign of any British monarch and the longest reign of any female monarch in the world.

To contrast, the current Queen of Great Britain, Elizabeth II, has ruled from February 6, 1952- Present . (63 years in 2015)
