District Residents Feature in Australia Day Awards Marg Cooper
Congratulations to June
and Neil Cameron for
being selected as the
Shire’s Senior Citizens
of the Year for 2010.
June and Neil have a
l o n g h i s t o r y o f
community engagement
and support and they
continue to contribute to
Meredith and Bamganie with as much enthusiasm
and passion as in their younger days.
Both retain a strong sense of responsibility towards
their fellow citizens, which rises from deep in their
souls. They are active individuals who apply hard
work, imagination, intelligence and a marked
capacity to motivate and to lead others.
They have a major influence within their local
community and also more broadly within our society.
Tom Banks is the Shire’s Young Citizen of the Year
for 2010. He was selected in recognition of his
service to the arts and community, in particular his
passion and skill as a talented writer and advocacy
work for people living with disability.
The Community Event of the Year has been
awarded to the “Memorable Men of Meredith” Book
Launch organised by the Meredith Community
House. The event celebrated the memorable people
and history of the Meredith community and provided
an inclusive community focused celebration for
residents of all generations.
These awards are a wonderful affirmation of the
strong volunteer culture and community spirit in our
district.
Dr Peter Jasek of Bannockburn is the Golden Plain
Shire’s Citizen of the Year for 2010.
Congratulations to all recipients and may we long
benefit from your tireless contribution.
(With additional material from the Shire’s media release.)
From left, Marg Cooper and Joan Brick (for the
Meredith Community Centre) and Neil and June
Cameron receive their Awards from Mayor Jenny
Blake.
The Bluestone Shines We reported in July last year that the 135 year old
“bluestone” - the centrepiece of the Meredith Primary
School - was to receive a makeover. Well it’s now done
and it’s probably true to say the building has never looked
better. Dividing walls were removed to create one large
utility space which, although for the time being will be a
large classroom, will soon become a whole-of-school
facility.
External work included weather proofing, and restoration
of the tuck pointing.
Together with extensive repair work on walls and

Christmas Sheep
Thank you to all the people who decorated and displayed
Christmas Sheep in Meredith.
They help to decorate the town for
Christmas in a country style, unique to
Meredith. They could be seen on gates, on
fences, around tree stumps and I believe one
made it to the stage at the Music Festival.
It is delightful to see the creative, artistic
flair that people bring to the display.
Well done and Thank you.

Meredith’s Community Christmas Celebration Di Ritchie
On Friday December 19th a crowd of over 100 joined
together in at Pioneer Park in Meredith for a
community celebration of Christmas.
A free sausage sizzle was enjoyed by everyone and then
we settled down on the balmy night in the rotunda and
amongst the trees to watch the children perform their play
on the real
meaning of
Christmas. The
music for the
carols which
followed was
once again
generously
provided by
“Band on the
Run”. Kym Ivory
was a great MC with Bruce providing a solo.
Then a special visitor in a red suit and white beard
arrived on a huge truck and gave out lollies and icy
poles. The large number of children present had a
great time.
Thank you to Santa, “Band on the Run”, Kym Ivory,
Bruce and Andrew Cooke for the use of his truck for
the band, the Combined Churches of Meredith and to
Kim, Karen and Mary for all their hard work in
setting up.
Reserve Friday December 17th for this
year’s Community Celebration of
Christmas.

Letters to the Editor
One of my Christmas presents was a book entitled “The
Queen’s English”, which gave derivations of various
words and phrases.
Under the entry “muck” it says - a four letter word with
kinship to the Old Norse term myki, meaning dung.
Enough said.

CHILD DROWNED.- On the 4th instant Dr.
Glendinning held an inquest at Gosling's Hotel,
Meredith, on the body of a little girl named Elizabeth
Davies, aged nineteen months, who on
the previous day, unobserved, seems to have fallen
into a waterhole, thirty-four yards from her father's
hut, at the pound, Meredith, and was drowned.
James Pickering, the constable at Meredith, describes
the waterhole to be six feet in length, by four feet in
width, and seven feet deep, with four feet and a half
of water in it.
The presence of these unprotected waterholes in the
immediate vicinity of houses where there are young
children is a fruitful source of employment to the
coroner. - Ballarat Star, Jan. 6. The Argus, Melbourne, Wed. 8th January 1862

Primary School Sweethearts Get
Married
On November 21st,
2009, Craig Dunn,
son of Dawn
Dunn, and Allen
Dunn (dec) of
Stawell and
Leanne Hearn,
daughter of Keith
and Dorothy Hearn
of Meredith,
celebrated their
wedding at Merygold Park, at Mt Doran.
Even though the rain and wind threatened, Leanne
and Craig’s special day was pleasant and calm, with
even the peacocks singing as the ceremony was
taking place.
Leanne arrived to meet her future husband riding Gail
and Tori Merygold’s horse Legend, who proudly
lived up to his name. All guests were thrilled with
Leanne’s beautiful arrival, as she was lead in by her
three children, bridesmaids Tamara and Caitlin, and
son Matthew, who was the bride’s attendant. They
joined the groom, standing with his two sons James,
the best man, and Rhys Dunn.
The celebrant was Bronwyn Davie, of Bannockburn
and photographs were
taken later that afternoon
at Dalkeith Cabins, Mt
Doran and also at
Steiglitz.
The beautiful
Bridesmaids dresses
were created by local
Kathy Nordin who
deserves a big Thank You.
Craig and Leanne Dunn also thank everyone who
helped with their special day, making it so very
memorable, and all the guests for their generous gifts,
beautiful thoughts and their great support on the day.
Thanks also go to the women of the Meredith and
District CWA for the wonderful catering provided on
their wedding day.
And congratulations Craig & Leannne

Lethbridge Cemetery Trust Turns 150 Raymond Kelly
In September 1859 the Rev. Robert Fleming, the Free
Presbyterian Minister at Meredith, convened a meeting for
the purpose of lobbying the Government into reserving a
permanent site for a cemetery in Lethbridge.
A petition was drawn up on behalf of the inhabitants and
forwarded to the Government.
Advice was received in November 1859 that the proposed
site had been inspected by the District Surveyor Mr A.J.
Skene who recommended its acceptance as suitable for a
cemetery.
The first Trustees were appointed on January 16, 1860.
On April 19, 1860 Mr John Murphy, secretary wrote as
follows:-
“The Trustees would respectfully call the attention of the
Government to the necessity of opening this Cemetery
without delay on account of the many burials daily taking
place in the bush owing to a large railway population on
the ground.”
This was during the construction period of the Geelong to
Ballarat railway.
Final approval was given by the Government on June 26,
1860.
Rules and Regulations of the Lethbridge General
Cemetery along with the fees and charges were gazetted
on May 13, 1862.
The first burials in the cemetery took place in August 1859
with infants making up over seventy per cent of the first
one hundred burials.
The main cause of death was viral pneumonia.
Over five hundred and seventy burials have taken place in
the cemetery.
The current Cemetery Trust held a meeting at “Apricot
with Attitude”, Midland Highway, Lethbridge on
Saturday, January 16, 2010, exactly 150 years to the day
since the Trust was first appointed.

The Last Ten Years
The last decade - awkwardly called the “noughties” -
was anything but nice when it came to rainfall. As
illustrated in the chart below, only two years were
close to average, (the grey bar) with the decade
showing a deficit of nearly 1300 mm (that’s over 50
inches to the metrically challenged). This represents
only 81% of the long term average. (The last five
years produced only 75% over average.) Of course,
we’re not alone in this. The inflow to Melbourne’s
dams in the decade were the lowest on record - 20%
lower than the second lowest decade - the 1990’s
windows, fresh paint, carpet and improved lighting have
created a space that retains its old world charm while
being highly functional as a modern teaching environment.
Carried out with funds provided under the national
government’s National School Pride program, it has
greatly enhanced and restored a building that will
certainly be a continuing source of pride for a long
time to come.
Anybody wishing to inspect the “New” bluestone
should contact Principal Doug Cations.
Funding has also been approved for rebuilding of the
weatherboard section, which is expected to start in the
next few months. A full report will be in the March issue.

issue, in the last days of November. Then, we
reported spring’s 170mm (and counting) was close to
the 200mm long term average. Well the clouds were
fruitful on those last few days, contributing to a
monthly total of 101.4mm (LTA 61.7mm) and a
season total of 205mm.

―New Year Solutions‖ The instant the fireworks faded and our sparklers fizzled
out, it started. The TV stopped showing the Sydney New
Year's Eve revellers dancing with the bridge in the
background, and started showing a seemingly endless
stream of ads selling fitness products and promises. One
ad wanted us to buy meal replacement shakes, another a
series of overpriced DVD’s that would apparently teach us
to dance around our lounge rooms to Latin music. The
overwhelming message was 2009 was over, and so was
the party. 2010 is the year to get serious about cellulite!
'Do you always make New Year's
resolutions and never keep them?'
asked the hungry bony lady on the
screen, smirking between two
ridiculously muscly, glistening men. I
do! I realised. To be fair, my
resolutions are usually things like 'be more organised',
'study more', 'save money'; I'm setting myself up to fail,
really.
'Wouldn't you love to reshape those problem areas?'
I would, but underfed lady isn't offering to sort out my
room or give me more hours in a day. She can't show me
how I can donate to Amnesty International and Medecins
Sans Frontiers and still afford to buy myself the occasional
text book. She's not going to bring peace to troubled
countries or come up with a solution for world hunger
(with her ribs sticking out like that, she's probably a fan of
malnutrition). According to the lady beaming at us out of
the TV, the biggest problem any of the tipsy twenty-
somethings in my friend James' living room are going to
face in 2010 is the size of our thighs. Luckily, she has the
solution for us.
Oddly, this solution she and the half dozen 'paid
presentations' following her ad have to offer isn’t eating
your vegetables and going for the occasional run down
Bamganie Road, or walk around the block, or even a
workout at the gym (public gyms have their drawbacks -
lycra is in, pyjamas, gumboots and loud singing definitely
out).
Apparently what you really need to do to achieve any kind
of happiness is wage war on the enemy: your body.
You've got to hate anything that wobbles! Starve it off
with tasteless low-kilojoule soups and ridiculous meal
replacements. Perform endless stupid exercises on
expensive bits of plastic. Rack up massive credit card debt.
Feel guilty when you eat a cheese sandwich. Turn life in to
a panicked whirl of calorie counting so you have
absolutely no time to enjoy anything,... not even 'The Bold
and the Beautiful', which you can watch only if you're
using the bits of expensive plastic at
the same time. By the time twiggy
lady's ad is over, I'm not feeling
inspired to whip out my credit card
and turn myself in to her. I'm just
noticing how fake and fixed her smile
looks. I'm eating another Malteaser,
pouring another glass of wine, and I'm feeling a bit sorry
for her.
Not that I don't support being healthy; everyone feels fitter
and happier after a delicious salad roll and good swim. I
just think there are better ways to go about it than
cultivating self-hatred, measuring your worth as a person
by how little you weigh, and starving yourself in to
something resembling a whippet more than a person.
The older ladies at my water aerobics class (I went the first
time for a lark with a friend, but now we just can't stop)
know a secret to health and happiness the Danoz Direct
ladies aren't privy to. It involves wearing a glamourous
bathing suit, giggling in the pool, and sharing a slice of
cake in the cafe afterwards. Strangely enough, fretting
about cellulite isn't part of the solution.
“Apparently what you really
need to do to achieve any kind
of happiness is wage war on
the enemy: your body.”

Two Little Boys Make History Marg Cooper
Jonathon and James Gargan were
baptized on Sunday January 17,
2010 at St Joseph’s Catholic
Church, Meredith by Father Jacob.
These sons of Chris and
Kimberley Gargan who live at
Ellalong, NSW are the fifth
generation of the Gargan family to
be christened at St Joseph’s
Church and the 6th generation to
worship there.
Jonathon born 2007 and James born 2009 are the sons of
Chris born 1970, who is the son of Kevin born 1945, who
is the son of Leonard born 1909, who was the son of
Edward born 1875, who was the son of Matthew born
1841.
Matthew Gargan came to Australia as a 19 year old in
1860 with his brother and a cousin.
They came from County Cavan, Ireland.
Matthew lived for a short time at She Oaks before settling
and farming on Lal Lal Road at Meredith which was one
of the major tracks to the goldfields.
In 1866 he married Mary Ann Stow. She was the first
teacher at the Catholic School in Meredith in 1861.
The school was held in the original Catholic Church which
was on land between Mercer and Sutherland Streets.
They were married in the Happy Valley Roman Catholic
Church.
At the time of their marriage, Mary Ann Stow was a
school mistress residing at Happy Valley.
The Gargan family farm is called “Killiney” because
Killiney Bay was the last part of Ireland that the Gargans
saw as they sailed for Australia.
The Gargans have been devoted to their church in
Meredith for almost 150 years.
The cousin of Matthew Gargan who sailed to Australia
with him in 1860 was engaged to a girl in Ireland.
Because there was a spare berth on the ship, he sailed with
his cousins and promised to send money and news home
so she could follow him.
When the money arrived the fiancée and her sister sailed
to Australia but they didn’t know that the letter they’d
written telling him that they were coming, was on the
same ship as they were.
She hunted for twelve months for him and eventually was
advised to go to Ballarat to the goldfields, where she got
employment at Craig’s Hotel. She found him in Ballarat,
they married, settled in Gippsland and had many children.
Landcare Report The first meeting for 2010
of the Bamganie /
Meredith Landcare
Group will be held on
Tuesday 3rd March at the
usual venue, the Meredith Community Centre at 8pm.
Please note the change of day from our previous
meeting days.
The latest Leigh Catchment newsletter details the
present difficulties confronting Landcare branches,
but there are apparently some Government initiatives
to try to reinvigorate the scheme.
Apparently there is now a new National Landcare
Facilitator and a National Framework for Landcare.
(Hopefully this will result in some funds for the
volunteers like landholders, who do the work!) There
is some money available for groups from DSE for
training volunteers. Sessions are being run at
Werribee, March 3rd, and Camperdown March 4th. in
our area.
Jenny Ryle (Leigh Catchment facilitator) has some
funding for serrated tussock awareness, and also for
River Health Funding.
RABBITS. Most people are aware that there are many rabbits
around at present, in spite of some evidence of
myxomatosis and the calicivirus. Our Group is not
running a poisoning campaign, but is invited to join
the Maude branch in its campaign on 20th February,
and 1st March for the carrot feeds, and 4th March for
the poison. Both Pindone and 1080 will be available
and the pick up point will be the Maude Recreation
Reserve.

Have You Heard
This One?
A family had a parrot whose swearing was a constant source of embarrassment for the mother of the house.
One day Mum took the parrot and stuck him in the freezer for punishment.
Twenty minutes later she checked the freezer and found him most remorseful.
"Alright, alright ‖ he said, ―I'll stop swearing, but I have a question".
―Yes?‖ said Mum tentatively.
―Tell me, what did the chicken do?"

Once Upon a Time Marg Cooper
Once upon a time a lean
young man from
Morrison enjoyed a
youth of racing blue utes

and down the Morrison
Hill until his birth date
was selected, he was
uniformed and trained
and sent away.
The lean young man
from Morrison had
courted girls from
Ballarat to Geelong to
Ballan but had his eye on
a girl from Cargerie.
But this girl was having lots of fun and enjoying her
freedom. She was an apprentice hairdresser in Ballarat,
had her own car and a friend who joined her in many
pranks and adventures.
The lean young man persisted and won the hand of the girl
from Cargerie and they were married on January 17, 1970.
Anne and John Parkinson have been married for 40 years.
Congratulations!

“Orphans of History” by Robert Holden
When the First Fleet sailed from Portsmouth on May 13,
1787 it consisted of eleven vessels.
Scattered over six of these ships were as many as thirty
four young voyagers under fourteen years of age.
During the voyage of nine months, twenty or more
children were added to its complement.
Allowing for three deaths, six miscarriages and stillbirths
there were about fifty children present to witness the
establishment of a convict settlement at Port Jackson.
Robert Holden tells that there are few records of these
children.
He tells that the concept of childhood has developed only
fairly recently and that children were not valued for their
own sake but were merely an inevitable part of life.
He also tells that the eighteenth century was a harsh and
authoritarian age where life was nasty, poor, short and
brutal punishment was often a feature of it.
He has used the surviving shreds of evidence and an
imaginative power to construct a history of the time of the
First Fleet and of the children of the First Fleet.
Robert Holden contends that “the imprints of history are
often created by the forgotten”.
It was his aim to “give voice to those who have not been
given a speaking part in our historical drama before”.
He has collated information from a huge range of sources
and has written an interesting book.
Robert Holden equates the settlement itself as a new child
or orphan of the Empire, separated from its parent by over
24,000 kilometres of ocean.
The book for discussion in February is “Bury Me Standing, The
Gypsies and their Journey”, written by Isabel Fonseca.

59 Years and 3 Days Marg Cooper
At the book launch in Meredith
on November 1, 2009 two men
met.
They had arrived in Melbourne
59 years and 3 days before on
October 26, 1950.
They had both been “Displaced
Persons” in Europe after WWII
and both of them travelled on
the American Navy Ship
“General CH Muir” to
Australia that left from
Bremerhaven in Germany on
September 25, 1950.
There was no fare but the migrants were required to sign a
contract to work in Australia for 2 years where the
authorities wanted them to work.
The Americans ran the ship but the passengers had to do
all the other jobs like cooking and cleaning.
The men did not meet each other until they were at
Bonegilla Migrant Camp.
The railways recruited 65 men including Gus Chuk and
Tad Woznica.
They left Bonegilla in two buses and a truck for their
luggage and a cut lunch and went to Newport, Melbourne.
Gus and Tad worked together at Spencer Street until Gus
was transferred to Stratford and Tad was transferred to
Bacchus Marsh.
Both men continued to work with the Victorian Railways
in different parts of the state until they retired. And both
married Australian girls and had families.
Gus had grown up in Slovenia, which when he was born
was part of Italy and Tad had grown up in Poland.
They met again at Meredith on November 1st and there
was a lot to talk about.
Gus and Tad met up
again at the Book launch

Cam died on November 27, 2009 at the age of 89 years and
was farewelled by a large crowd at a service at Ormond Road
Uniting Church. He was remembered as a gentle caring man
who always had a twinkle in his eye.
Born and raised in Melbourne, he enlisted for WWII, entering
camp on June 12, 1940 as a member of the 2nd, 9th Field
Ambulance. After training at various camps, he sailed on
February 4, 1941 on the Queen Mary from Sydney and arrived
in Singapore on February 18, 1941.
They spent almost 12 months in Malaya and Singapore,
preparing for a possible invasion before they were captured by
the Japanese Army and became Prisoners of War on February
15, 1942.
Cam’s first job was to wash and clean up fellows off the
battlefield, and then he worked in the wards and graduated to
assisting in the operating theatre.
He lived in a tent with 7 men that they christened “Dunrovin” as
they knew they weren’t going anywhere for awhile!
Cam called his farm at Meredith “Dunrovin” and the name was
later proudly displayed on his unit.
He kept a box of memorabilia from Changi, including a little
book in which he recorded statistics and important details. He
said the Japanese were tough
and cruel to the POW’s and that
the food was inadequate.
He also told of the friendship of
his seven special friends and
how they cared for each other.
Cam came home on the
“Arawa” after spending 3½
years as a Prisoner of War. His
weight had gone from 12 stone
to 6 stone.
Cam was discharged on
November 15, 1945.
He believed the story of the war
and of the Prisoners of War
needs to be told.
Left, “...a gentle caring man
who always had a twinkle in
his eye.” and below, Cam and
Nancy

Speak Up! Two years ago, we surveyed a sample
group of readers to get some feedback on
the Newsletter’s (then) new format and content. The
results have been valuable in guiding development
since then. We think it’s time we tapped public
opinion once again, but this time everyone’s invited
to put a view.
Just mark one of the boxes in each row then write
your answers to the three questions below.
What would you leave out?
What would you add?
What would you change?
Thank You We value your opinions. Please, by the end of February, drop your completed form at the Meredith General Store or mail to us, c/- Meredith Post Office, 3333.
