It may be Valentine’s Day weekend in the secular world, but in the liturgy of the Church this weekend, we celebrate the First Sunday of Lent during this Jubilee Year of Mercy. The first reading from the Book of Deu-teronomy is Moses’ account of how merciful God had been to the people of ancient Israel in the past: how the Lord took their wandering ancestors and turned them into a great nation he called his very own; how God de-livered his chosen people from their enslavement and affliction in Egypt; and how the Lord fulfilled his prom-ise to bring his people into a rich new land, flowing with milk and honey and other abundant blessings. In this passage, Moses instructs the people to offer the first fruits of their harvest in gratitude for this remarkable outpouring of divine mercy in their history and daily lives. The second reading from St. Paul is a joyful and confident declaration that “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” St. Paul adds that all we have to do is believe in our hearts that God raised Jesus from the dead, and commit our lives to proclaim-ing in word and deed the central truth that “Jesus Christ is Lord.” As usual, the gospel on this First Sun-day of Lent is the story of the recently baptized Jesus being led by the Holy Spirit into the desert for forty days to be tested or tempted by the devil. This is truly a dra-matic confrontation. The back story of this spiritual face-off is that despite God’s gracious mercy, Israel had repeatedly put God to the test, thus demonstrating their infidelity. But in this encounter with his supernatural adversary, Jesus remains utterly faithful to God his Fa-ther. The devil tempts Jesus to make his mission about himself and his miraculous powers, and to enjoy the pleasurable riches of this world rather than reaping the blessed rewards of being totally dedicated to the will of God no matter what. Jesus rebuffs the devil by citing God’s Word; banishes the Evil One for the time being; and strengthens himself for his ensuing journey to the cross. May this Lent be a time in which we squarely face our temptations, mindful of our identity as follow-ers of Christ and grateful for the Lord’s faithful love and abundant mercy in our lives!

Aldona Lingertat, from the Theological Institute for the New Evangelization at St. John’s Seminary in Brighton, will offer a presentation on the “Pope Francis Effect” on Wednesday, February 17 at 10AM in the OLA Church Hall. Next Sunday, February 21, our Music Ministry will be presenting a concert called “From Darkness to Light” at 2PM in St. Maria Goretti Church. Everyone is welcome! Please note: Fr. Tony or I will be available for the Sacrament of Reconciliation from 6:30-7:30PM (alternating between OLA and SMG) each Wednesday during Lent apart from the Wednesday of Holy Week. Two socials are also on our calendar: this Sunday’s (February 14) Valentine Day brunch at OLA following the 11AM Mass; and a Pasta Dinner at SMG following the 4PM Mass on Saturday, February 27. On World Marriage day, here is a blessing prayer for our married couples: Lord, increase and consecrate the love which this cou-ple has for one another. The wedding rings they once exchanged are the sign of their fidelity. May they con-tinue to prosper in the grace of their sacrament…we ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. Blessings to all of you in the week ahead! Fr. Paul
