Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse is now so close to the edge of the dunes that we have to move it to save it. The lighthouse is a very popular tourist attraction and a distinctive landmark for the area. We are moving the lighthouse now, as it would otherwise fall within a period of 5-10 years, with a high risk for visitors on the beach. The Danish Nature Agency and Hjørring Mu- nicipality are collaborating closely on the en- tire Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse moving project. In the 2019 Budget, the government allocated DKK 5 million to the lighthouse moving project. How we will move the lighthouse Lønstrup Murerforretning is responsible for the move and for all of the preparatory work, which includes reinforcement of the existing foundation and embedding some very strong iron beams. Then the lighthouse will be put on ”roller skates” and BMS Krangården will move it to the new location, using a rail system, jacks and hydraulics. The lighthouse will be hauled at eight meters an hour, and the work will take about a day. The tower will be moved 65-80 meters away from the edge, so it will still have a dramatic location on top of Rubjerg Knude. When do we start? August 14, 2019, Lønstrup Murerforretning will close off the area surrounding the lighthouse. Then, they will get underway with the prepara- tory work. You are more than welcome to follow the work from the very beginning, as long as you respect the barriers we have set up for safety reasons. The plan is to relocate the lighthouse in the end of October, but we do not yet know the exact date, as it will depend on the wind and weather. Would you like to learn more? You can learn more about the lighthouse relocation on the website www.fyretflytter.dk How we will relocate the Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse: · The structure’s foundation will be dug free and reinforced. · Steel beams will be embedded in and around the foundation. · The space between the old and new locations will be dug out. · Two tracks will be constructed with steel plates, and rails will be laid out on top of the steel plates. · The lighthouse will be pulled to the new position by means of ”roller skates”, jacks and hydraulics. · The steel beams will be removed and the foundation will be repaired and covered.
