Marching forward with 2015. My S-A-D condition is very happy to see lighter evenings, warmer days and happy smiling faces!

I often feel that my deadlines make the year go quicker, or is that just an age thing? Easter is almost upon us, but before you embark on over-indulgence why not take a look at my before and after pictures - yes I’ve printed them for all to see! Hopefully I can

inspire you to make some changes to your own eating habits. The tiniest change can have a huge impact.

Our recipe this issue is worth a try - smoked haddock kedgeree - I’ll definitely be trying this one as I love smoked haddock. For those that don’t cook then the Fourmile has it’s popular 20% off voucher on again, or if a pre-theatre meal is what you are after then why not try Poldinos?

Elaine at Junction Arts has her new exhibition up and running, if you’ve never been in it is truly worth a visit. I’ll need to pop in by as my brother and his girlriend have just got engaged - finally! Great excitement for our family.

Grab your cuppa and enjoy the rest of the magazine! Mine’s a hot water with lemon, what’s your favourite?

Until next time, Sue

SMOKED HADDOCK KEDGEREE

Just a few ingredients are needed to make this simple rice dish but it’s full of flavour! It’s ideal for a quick and easy supper or filling weekend brunch served with crusty bread or warmed mini naan breads, if liked. Serves 4Ready in 45 minutes

350g smoked haddock fillet4 large eggs1 tbsp sunflower oil1 small onion, peeled and finely chopped1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed½ tsp ground coriander½ tsp ground turmeric1 tsp mild curry powder300g easy-cook basmati rice3tbsp fresh chopped coriander

Place the haddock in a large pan, cover with plenty of cold water and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for 5-6 minutes until the fish just flakes. Boil the eggs in a small pan of water for 7-8 minutes.

Remove the fish with a slotted spoon and flake the flesh discarding any skin and bones. Strain the cooking liquid into a jug – you’ll need about 600ml so top up with water if needed. Run the boiled eggs under cold water until cool enough to handle. Remove the shells and cut into wedges. Set aside.

Heat the oil in a large deep frying pan and fry the onion and garlic over a medium heat for 5-6 minutes until softened. Stir in the spices and cook for 1 minute then add the basmati rice and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Gradually pour in the reserved stock and bring to the boil.

Reduce the heat and simmer for about 15 minutes or until the rice is tender and most of the liquid has been absorbed, stirring occasionally. Gently stir in the flaked haddock, eggs and coriander and heat through for 1 minute. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve immediately.

TipAdd a large handful of baby spinach leaves or some lightly fried mushrooms just before the end of cooking to make this dish even more substantial.

Beer at HomeBy Ted Bruning

Funny old month, March – is it winter or spring? Let’s look charitably on March and think of it as the start of spring. Lambs gambolling shakily in the meadows. Primroses peeping shyly under the hedgerows. Bare branches budding. Hares behaving badly. That sort of thing.

And in fact for the truly intractable beer-geek March does have a special significance: in Medieval Germany it was held to be the last month when it was cold enough to brew without risking airborne infections. Everybody brewed like billy-oh, storing their produce through the hot summer in ice-hewn from glaciers. The last of the March brew was polished off in a big splurge in October, when the weather was cool enough to start brewing again. The Germans traditionally drink Märzenbier at Oktoberfest, but we can’t easily get that, so we’ll settle for two strong, lush, British classic pale ales instead.

Greene King Abbot (5% alcohol) is a pale copper colour with a deep head and a fine spritz. In bottle it’s a lot lighter in character than on draught: the nose is laden with fresh green fruit, while the palate is creamy and full-bodied but without the marmalade

sweetness of the cask version and the finish is tart and bitter.

Adnams Broadside is stronger at 6.3% alcohol and much darker in colour; but the nose is still fresh and fruity and gives way to pear-drop esters – like varnish, but nice. The palate, again, is surprisingly light and still carries more than a hint

of pear-drops, while the finish has a very slight lingering bitterness. It’s a gentle giant.

Royal Warrant for James Cordiner & Son Ltd, Aberdeen James Cordiner & Son Limited are delighted to announce that after several years of supplying the Royal Household they have been awarded a Royal Warrant to Her Majesty The Queen. Cordiners started life in 1870 as a small boat building business in Aberdeen. Today, over 145 years and five generations later, it is still run by the Cordiner family. Keeping pace with the changing face of customer needs and today’s challenging financial climate means Cordiners now supplies all sizes of businesses from multinational companies to sole traders throughout Aberdeen and the UK. Cordiners deals with a huge range of timber products including construction timber, pallets, boxes, sheet materials, fencing and joinery products. Goods are often made to order to meet the particular needs of customers. A first class management team with a combined experience of over 120 years in the timber trade, large stocks and their own fleet of vehicles means Cordiners has been able to compete with larger companies on quality, value for money and fast delivery.

Aware of environmental responsibilities, whenever possible Cordiners ensures that the timber used is derived from indigenous, sustainable forests. Commenting on the award of the Royal Warrant, Managing Director Stuart Cordiner said, “My great great grandfather built up Cordiners in Aberdeen with a reputation for quality, customer satisfaction and personal service. It is my privilege to have spent the past 30 years working in this family company. Our customers tell us it is our bespoke approach and focus on quality that continues to make Cordiners stand out. The award of a Royal Warrant underlines that family businesses with a personal service can offer a unique approach benefitting their customers. It is my hope that we will carry on satisfying clients in Aberdeen and all over the UK for many more generations to come.”

Positivity from Lee

Lee DonaldElite Personal Trainer07510054788www.ldpt.co.ukwww.leedonaldpersonaltraining.com

The sun’s shining, blue skies overhead and the week FULL of opportunities has just begun.

It’s a happy time right?

Or is it...

Just how happy are YOU?

Believe it or not, how you THINK and FEEL is directly affected by what you eat.

Evidence proves that eating the rights foods can improve your IQ, your mood, memory, emotional stability and keep your mind young.

Patrick Holford undertook the UK’s biggest health survey asking questions that

included

‘How sharp is your mind?’ ‘How balanced is your mood?’‘How consistent is your energy?’This survey was done in 2004 and included 37,000 people.

Below are some of the findings.

Become impatient quickly - 82%Have low energy levels - 80%Energy is less than it used to be - 76%Feel have too much to do - 67%Become anxious or tense easily - 64%Suffer with PMS/PMT - 63%Easily become angry - 53%Suffer from depression - 44%Have difficulty concentrating - 43%Become nervous/hyperactive - 38%Have poor memory/difficulty learning - 32%I don’t know about YOU but I find these results pretty scary!

(especially seeing as this survey was carried out 11 years ago)

Our lives and environments are continually changing and our bodies are struggling to cope with it.

We live in a world containing over 10 million new chemicals, thousands of which are pumped into our food, injected into our toiletries and added to our cleaning products.

Some of these chemicals are found in the water you drink and the air that you breathe.

Is it ANY wonder that the human body is struggling to cope?

The basic foundations of our lives are changing so fast that the BRAIN is struggling to keep up.

We are living in a fast paced, super charged world and the knock on results of this is ill health and poor mental health.

Think about it...

You now text/email instead of writing letters.

You don’t have to wait til you get home to make a phonecall - contact is at the touch of a button.

You can get info, purchase and search just about anything ‘online’.

Our kids seem to now have a mobile as standard.

It makes for an exciting and privileged world but it also means that we seem to

forget to take care of ourselves.

Constantly feeling PRESSURED by time and space and STRESSING out about every little thing is neither making us happy or healthy.

According to the World Health Organisation, mental health problems are becoming the No.1 health problem this century with 1 in 4 people suffering with them at some point in their life.

Technology will continue to blow our minds, chemicals will continue to surround us so it’s time to TAKE CONTROL of the

things you can.

FOODEXERCISEThese will BOTH have a DIRECT effect on your mood, energy, emotions, brain power, physical & mental health.

Get in that driver’s seat and take care of yourself.

YOU have the power amigo!

There is only ONE of you, NO replacement and NO second chance.

Let’s get it right and use today to get back on that wagon and start REALLY pushing forward to your goals.

Spring MotoringWinter driving is well behind us, but spring brings its hazards too. Iain Betson offers these driving tips to get you safely to summer.

Run your AC at least once a week, even in winter. Remember, you don’t have to turn it down to a chill level that a penguin would love; just make sure all is working OK. So it will work when you really need it.

Check the fluid levels and, perhaps while you’re at it, give the bodywork a good wash too. Get all the salt deposits off from the wheel arches and underneath.

In these months the sun is still quite low in the sky but the glare will be getting stronger. Don’t just rely on the sun-visor; take a pair of sunglasses with you.

April showers will lift all the rubber and other muck out of the tarmac, causing the road surface to be slippery for a time – extra care will be needed when cornering or braking.

In springtime, we all like to get out pursuing our pastimes after the dark winter months. For many, this will mean using the roads, but not as motorists. Be aware of extra walkers, joggers, cyclists, horses and riders

Winter takes its toll on road surfaces and traffic makes a small pothole bigger. It doesn’t just make for a bumpy ride; hitting a pothole can throw the steering out of alignment and, if you have alloy wheels, crack the spokes. Do your best to avoid potholes, but not at the expense of swerving dangerously to avoid them.

I didn’t click my fingers and go from above left to the extreme right! It took time, effort, blood sweat and no tears and I did get there after several months... and boy was it worth it![

My Journey complete.

I did not particularly enjoy getting this before picture done! And now, it seems worse. I didn’t think I looked too bad... I think you only see what you want to see.

My journey with Alizonne, which is now called Alevere, did not take too long. I managed to go on holiday for a month and still follow the regime. Although it was difficult at times it is not nearly as difficult as “maintaining” the new found Sue!

I thought I’d taken more pictures of my progress but have put up the ones that were deemed acceptable! The first two were about a month after I started. The third one was about 12 weeks in. No 4, 5 and 6 were in Australia where I lost a further 12lbs! The last two were when I finished Phase 8. I was well under my target weight and almost felt too thin.

Since then I’ve been on another journey! Maintenance. This is definitely the hardest part. Suddenly all your boundaries are removed and at first you are very cautious! Scared to upset the apple cart... then you get a bit bold and think I’ll try some of that! DON’T is all I will say. DON’T go there. Stick with your Phase 8 eating plan!

I attend the clinic once every six weeks now for follow-up sessions. The first follow up session I was concerned as I’d gained weight - to my relief it was “muscle”! I then managed to break my toe! Painful, yes. Curtailed the exercise regime - most definitely! Christmas was my next challenge!

Page 17: Web issue 91 wa1

I didn’t click my fingers and go from above left to the extreme right! It took time, effort, blood sweat and no tears and I did get there after several months... and boy was it worth it! ]

I felt great. I looked great and decided that I could eat what I liked. No, you can’t and I definitely should have just had Christmas indulgence for a DAY! But, it lasted the whole month. I was just making really bad choices when I knew damn fine I couldn’t sustain the eating without a whole load of exercise.

So - the toe mended I embarked on getting fit again. Whilst out delivering I slipped on a piece of ice and my foot went down a small step! Injured again! It just shows you how easy it is to set yourself back.

I’m about two weeks away from being fully mobile again. With the lighter nights I know that I’ll be able to get out more and be tempted back to eating healthier. I certainly do not want to spoil all my hard work.

I love the feeling of being “lighter”. Of being able to embark on new things and not get tired working out. It will almost be a year since I started the diet and I still have seven more months of follow-ups. I will keep you posted and when the gazette celebrates it’s tenth year at the end of August I’ll give you a progress report!

I am more than happy to chat to anybody considering embarking on the diet just drop me an email at [email protected] I’ll try and answer any question as honestly as possible.

I hope I can even inspire some of you to make some small changes as that in itself can lead to great results. Happy, healthy eating. Ditching the sugary drinks for water would be a great start! Along with moving! Yes, get up off that sofa and get moving!

Cults ScoutsThe 21st Aberdeen Scouts have some exciting trips planned for 2015. In April, a group of scouts will travel to Stavanger for sailing and canoeing with Norwegian Sea Scouts. The same Norwegian Scouts who visited the Scout Group recently, for a week-end of joint activities, will be providing the water-based activities from their boat house, near Stavanger. Some basic Norwegian language lessons will also be provided, as will visits to the Oil Museum, Stavanger and the Viking Sword Monument, Hafrsfjord. The Norwegian Sea Scouts are kindly providing home hospitality for the trip to Norway.

In August, during the Scout Adventure Week, Cults Scouts will travel to the Loch Insh Water Sports Centre, near Aviemore, for more water-based activities. On dry land, a day of fun is planned at the Landmark Forest Centre. These activities help promote the international dimension of the Scout programme enabling more scouts to gain the top awards, including the D of E Award.

As architects, Ian and Ron McGregor are often approached by clients unsure about the building process, and whether they require the services of an architect.

When first contacted by a client, about improving their home or building a new one, we arrange an INITIAL CONSULTATION to establish the client’s requirements and explain the process. Following this, we offer to carry out a FEASIBILITY STUDY – this typically includes: a measurement survey, computer generated drawings of existing and proposed, along with visualisations of the design (examples above), and reporting of overall project costs.

On completion of the feasibility study, the project can move on to the PLANNING stage – which deals with the external appearance of the building. Following the planning process, we apply for BUILDING WARRANT approval, with drawings detailed to meet current regulations. With these drawings, we prepare tender packages, which are sent out to local building contractors to obtain competitive costs.

During the CONSTRUCTION phase, we oversee projects through to completion, bringing designs to reality by working closely with building contractors to transform your home.

Employing an architect is essential to the smooth running of building projects, large and small. With over 10 years’ experience, and a range of successfully completed projects, we will maximise the space, light and aesthetic quality of your home.

The Law Practice Solicitors and Estate Agents recently revealed the first stage of its

exciting plans to celebrate its tenth year of business, pledging support to ten local charities in a bid to thank the community that helped it flourish in the last decade. Dur-ing 2015 the team will support one charity for each year it had been in business, with each cause hand-picked by a different member of staff.

“That way, each charitable effort really means something to everyone,” said Mar-garet Waldron, principal solicitor. “Giving back is so important and corporate social responsibility is a big part of The Law Prac-tice. Since January, we’ve pledged support to Give Blood Scotland, Scotland’s largest children’s charity, Aberlour Child Care Trust, and Cfine, which provides food bank sup-port for local families in poverty. We’ve got lots more up our sleeve too.”

The Law Practice has gone from strength to strength in the past decade and now boasts a team of twelve: “Last year we launched a leasing company, increased staff and intro-duced an independent mortgage advisor on-site.  But, as we embark on year ten, the ethos remains the same as day one.

“We’re honest, reliable and interested: what a solicitor should be. But we merge these traditional values with a fresh, energetic and contemporary outlook to set us apart. We make it our purpose to smile, share sto-ries and celebrate traditions. That’s where Cake Friday comes in. We put our heart and soul into every transaction and we get our clients there, whatever it takes.”

The Law Practice was born after an unexpected, yet natural, opportunity for Margaret after diverse career history. After studying languages at University, Margaret dabbled in banking, aced her secretarial studies and learned a lot as a personal assistant then merged family and work by qualifying as a playgroup supervisor. In her late thirties, she challenged herself with a degree and, by the time she turned 43, was a qualified solicitor.

The small but perfectly formed team specialises in residential property sales and purchases, estate agency, residential leasing, re-mortgages, transfer of titles, executory transactions, wills and power of attorney, matrimonial conveyancing and notarising.

Margaret sees her company as an interest-ing alternative to the solicitor stereotype: “The team has real excitement for our cli-ents’ successes and I believe The Law Prac-tice does law and estate agency differently. Whilst we’re unscrupulously professional, we don’t take ourselves too seriously. It’s the perfect balance and I think we’re unique in Aberdeen.

“There are many firms where it’s all about the numbers. I want our reputation to be all about great service. Lots of people say they’re focused on providing the best personal service for clients but our feedback from those aware we’re look-ing after them says it all. Of course not every time, but a lot of the time, we find they just won’t go elsewhere.”
