Suggestions for activities to support your child’s learning and development – Early Years

Week 13 – 15 th – 19 th June 2020

Young children are developing their fine motor skills at super speed, and they enjoy any activity that involves fine motor skills practice.

Fun with paper plates All you need are some paper plates, paint or markers/crayons, glue and some scissors, simple shapes for the children to decorate and they will love making a whole collection of animals.

Your child can practice their cutting skills especially with the lion and the hedgehog and for the sheep you can use shredded paper or cotton wool. The snail design is an easier one to try for very young children.

Simple threading activity Simple fine motor skills activities are pretty much the only time you will see your young child sitting still and concentrating! (But don’t expect them to sit for too long, it’s totally normal for them to stop in the middle of a game like this and decide the colander also makes an awesome drum!)All you need is a colander some straws or pipe cleaners and let them thread away.

Simple bird feeders

These simple bird feeders are great fun to make and will give children more fun watching the birds attracted in to your garden.

You will need, Bird Seed, Peanut Butter (or almond butter if there is an allergy in the family), Toilet Paper Roll, Twine or string to hang the roll from the tree.

Start by covering the toilet paper roll in peanut butter – use a small spatula for spreading.

Next, roll the peanut butter covered roll in bird seed and let it sit for a few minutes before attaching a string or twine for hanging it in the garden

Matching shapes Collect some pebbles, stones or leaves from your walks, help your child to draw around them carefully and then mix them up. It may help to take a photo before you move the stones for the children to reference.

Whose feet?

A great guessing game for young children, take some chalk and some shoes or wellies from different members of the family, take it in turns to draw around them and guess who they belong to!

You can even add in some animal’s feet for them to guess by giving them clues - sounds or writing the first letter of the word next to it, be prepared to have your garden path covered in chalk!

The children will have just as much fun cleaning the chalk off with a bucket of water and a paint brush or an old washing up bottle to squirt the chalk off!

Fun story and rhyme times – Swindon libraries

Enjoy these fun stories, rhymes and activity ideas with your children

Books introduce children to the exciting world of stories and can help them learn how to express their own thoughts and emotions, and an important source of new vocabulary.

Songs and rhymes are especially good for children as the rhythms and repetitive language make it easier for babies and young children to learn language structures and skills.

So join in and have some fun together!
