The word “hieroglyph” is made up from two Greek words: hieros = sacred and glyphe = carving. Hieroglyphics originated as early as 3100BC and were used in various forms by the Egyptians until around 400AD. After this the Egyptians started writing in a script called Demotic. For hundreds of years hieroglyphs were undecipherable, until in 1799 the Rosetta Stone was discovered in northern Egypt. It had the same passage written on it in Egyptian hieroglyphics, Demotic and Greek. A Frenchman, Jean-Francois Champollion was the first to decode the hieroglyphs using his knowledge of Greek. The Rosetta Stone is now in the British Museum, London.
