1.

Click the Apple sign on the top left corner of the desktop and click System Preferences…2. Click Languages & Text

3.

Click on the Input Sources tab. Find and check Chinese – Simplified. Under it, check Pinyin – Simplified. (Note: this screenshot also includes Chinese – Traditional. You do NOT need to check this box.)

4. At the bottom right of the window, make sure you check Show Input menu in menu bar.

5. You will now see the US flag on the top right of the desktop. Click the flag and select Pinyin to begin typing Chinese! Click the US flag to type in English.

Turn on Simplified Chinese language features (in Microsoft Word)

You turn on the Chinese language features of Office by using the Microsoft Language Register. Then, for each Office application that you want to type Chinese characters in, you can select a Chinese input type.1. Close any open Office applications.

2. Go to Spotlight (the magnifying glass on top right corner of desktop), and search for Microsoft Office 2011

3. Click the folder and then open Additional Tools. Open Microsoft Language Register (the folder), and then double-click Microsoft Language Register to open the application.

4. On the Select the language to enable for Microsoft Office pop-up menu, click Simplified Chinese, and then click OK.

5. You can now type Chinese characters in the application that you are using and use the other Chinese language features in Office.

1. To type Chinese in Microsoft Word, you only need to type the Pinyin sound, not the tone. As you type, a row of characters with the same sound will appear.

2. Enter the number of the character you want to type or click the character with your mouse. Ex. After typing “ni,” enter “1” or move the mouse to the character and click it.

3. You can also press the Space bar, which will automatically enter the first character in the row.

4. If you cannot find the character you want in the first row, click the down arrow on the right side of the row for more options.

5. The more Pinyin sounds you type, the better the program can “guess” which characters you would like to choose. Ex. If you type “nihao” without spaces, the program will predict that you want to type 你好. However, avoid typing too many words/phrases consecutively because you may misspell one letter and have to retype the entire phrase to choose the characters.

6. To add Pinyin over the characters, first highlight the characters. Next, click the n文 box and

the Phonetic Guide will pop out. The ideal size is size 12, Centered Alignment, and Ruby text distance: 2. Note: only highlight 2-3 sentences, as the Phonetic Guide only works a few lines at a time.
