INTRODUCTION

Across the world, industries are becoming increasingly concerned about their environmental performance because of the growing compulsions through legislations and mounting public pressures. Also, globalisation of capital flows has heightened the pressure to improve corporate governance and responsibilities around the world. Environmental disasters such as Bhopal tragedy, Rhine pollution, Chernobyl disaster, acid rain damage, etc., has led to growing public pressures all over the world resulting in imposition of stringent legislations with severe penalties in the matter of environmental issues. Issues like global warming, emission of green house gases, depletion of green cover, rising of sea level, shrinking of glaciers, acid rain, increased concentration of harmful gases in atmosphere, pollution of surface and under ground water resources and land pollution are some of the burning issues faced by the modern world. "Sustainable development" is the buzz word now and the importance to conserve the environment and natural resources is now realized world over.

Enlightened and dutiful organizations are adopting environmental management systems to control the impact of their activities and product on environment and to conserve valuable natural resources. The whole business philosophy is now changing. Now an organization is judged not only by its financial performance but also by its environmental performance and contribution to society. Business leaders whose initial response was defensive are now convinced of the need for a more proactive approach towards environmental issues.

Environmental Management Systems (EMS) certification is an opportunity that can enable companies acquire the label of environmentally conscious enterprise. At the same time, the appropriate management of environmental issues contributes positively to economic gain and increases the competitiveness of the company. Environmentally conscious organizations prefer to do business with like-minded companies, i.e., those who demonstrate their commitment to environmental management through internationally recognized standards such ISO 14001:2004. ISO 14001 is an international standard on Environmental Management System which provides a frame work for managing significant environmental aspects arising from a organization’s activities, product and services. With a systematic approach, the environment challenges can be converted into opportunities.

With the above backdrop and to aid the progressive organizations striving for implementing and improving environmental performance, we have pleasure to inform that Trans-Trainings Limited, New Delhi (TTL) is organizing ISO 14001:2004 Lead Auditor Course at New Delhi from 1st May, 08 to 5th May,08.
