Thank You for joining the Ned Baumer Swim TeamWe’d like to welcome you to our team! Swim team can be one of the more exciting, exhilarating and, yes, exhausting activities your family will experience together. Swim team truly is a family affair, as there’s much more to it than swimming laps. This packet is meant to introduce you to all the goes on between the meets and behind the scenes. We hope you find it helpful as we start off the summer swim season!

Philosophy:Having fun is the most important thing we can do. Personal development is what is most important which is more than just improving a swimmers times is. We believe that by establishing a healthy environment that encourages kids to do their best while having fun our season will be a success! Also Setting realistic goals and meeting them through hard work, determination, and commitment. These goals will be both personal & team oriented. Together, swimmers and coaches will create a team where respect and unity fosters a supportive, family-like environment.

ExpectationsAlthough swimming is considered an individual sport, our summer league is structured with an emphasis on TEAM. Any team is only as good on the people on it and therefore our expectations are simple:1. Have fun!!!2. Do your best- it’s a lot more important than being the best!3. Pay attention to the coaches: with over 100 swimmers disruptions aren’t fairto the other swimmers on the team or in your lane.4. Keep your commitments: We are planning on you being at the swim meetsunless you let us know you cannot make it- please make sure you do this!

Practice:JUNE Practice.. Monday-Friday Monday –Thursday; White team (Youngers) 4:30-5:30pm; Silver Team (Olders) 5:30-6:30pm Fridays: Combined young & old: 4:30pm-5:30pm

JULY & AUGUST Monday – Friday. Monday –Thursday; Younger: 4:30pm – 5:30pm. Older: 5:30pm – 6:30pm. Fridays: Combined young & old: 4:30pm-5:30pm

Coaches expect swimmers to be in their swim suits ready start warm-ups with their equipment at the beginning of practice. Swimmers are expected to attend all practices, unless approved by a coach. Practice makes progress, especially where swimming is concerned. Swimmers are encouraged to attend practice on a regular basis. It is encouraged for swimmers to attend at least 3-4 practices a week or more whenever possible. Practice times are posted above, if you cannot make it to your suggested time on some days, swimmers are more than welcome to join in with the other time slot! Just communicate with the coaches. Swimmers are expected to behave in a positive manner during practice and be respectful of all coaches and other

swimmers. Please know that disruptive or rude behavior at practice will not be tolerated and the coaches have the right to remove the swimmers from practice.

Swim Team Email:The Ned Baumer Swim Team email address is; [email protected]. If you would like to be put on the list please email the above email address with the following information; Swimmers Name (first and last), Phone #, DOB, & any other addition phone #’s or anything you would like us to have. This email address is used to send out faster notifications about swim practice & other activities such as swim meets, donations, fundraisers, etc… Also if parents need to talk to the coaches or let us know about absences. So please be sure to give us a good email that we can reach you at! We will try & check the email often, but if it is urgent please call the pool (858) 538-80983 or any coach. (Phone #’s listed on about the coaches’ page).

Equipment: Swimmers must have a practice suit, goggles, cap (if needed), and a towel. We recommend swimmers to purchase the team suit for swim meets. Our team suit is highly recommended, but optional. (PLEASE DO NOT wear your team suit to practice). Water bottles are greatly encouraged. You can find the team suit at Paradowskis. (*see page in packet with swim suit*). All girls are required to wear a swim cap, and bikini suits are NOT permitted. *We have Team Swim Caps available to purchase. Latex Caps: $4 Each; Silicone Caps: $9 Each. If you are interested in purchasing one please speak to one of the coaches or a lifeguard on staff.

Monthly Fees:VERY IMPORTANT: Payments are expected to be paid on time at the beginning of each month. The cost is based on month-to-month payments, not practices, meaning; if your swimmer only attends 10 practices in that month, you still pay the set monthly price.

June: $27July: $38August: $38***Please NOTE new $2 Transaction fee is now applied to monthly payment at pool office & 3% charge at home with credit card payment!*****If your payment isn’t paid by the end of the 2nd week in each month, we will not let your swimmer(s) practice till paid, so please try to pay A.S.A.P. We don’t want kids to have to miss practice time because of this!**

Active Net Account:We are asking all swimmers to create a family account on SDrecconnect.com. If you have any problems making your account or help signing up, please feel free to call the pool, (858) 538-8083. All fees will be paid through your account at the beginning of the month. Swim Meets:Swimmers are expected to make it to ALL Swim Meets, unless approved by a coach. However, we do understand people go on vacation and have other commitments during meet times/dates. (Keep in mind to be eligible for the Summer Invitational, swimmers must have competed in at least two summer meets, we have a total of 5 summer meets). It is important to be on time for meets and take part in the meet warm up. (We ask everyone to be there by 7:30am). This will prepare your swimmer for the meet and allow them some time to relax and have fun with the team before the meet starts. Plan arriving on time for your swimmer to warm up, find the coaches and team area and get ready to warm up (Warm up Normally Starts at 7:45am). Meet Seating: It is important for all our swimmers to sit together as a TEAM. This is a great way to get to know all the swimmers on the team, have fun, do cheers, and make new friends. Swimmers need to sit in the designated TEAM AREA or in close proximity for the duration of the meet. This will also ensure that the swimmers get to their event on time, & coaches know where they are in case we need to make changes to relays or need to speak with swimmers.

The Monday before the meet is the LAST day to sign up. (We attached the dates of when sign ups star and end in the Calendar, on the bottom). If you would like to sign up for the meet please see one of the Coaches. If something comes up and you are unable to attend, PLEASE be sure to contact one of the coaches by calling.

Strikes:Swimmers are responsible to follow the team rules. We will be working with a 3 strikes system. After the swimmer receives a third strike the swimmer will be kicked off the swim team for that particular season (summer, fall, spring). When the swimmer receives their second strike they will be given a written letter that the parent must sign & return to a coach. Please see the rest of the packet for list of team rules.

Parent Involvement:Parent Volunteers are vital to the swim program. At meets, parents are encouraged to volunteer as timers. Also, at home meets help out with snack bar. Parents can also help out with any behind the scene things, such as the summer parties or summer gifts. Just talk to Coach Nicole about it, if you would like to help out. (It would be greatly appreciated)

Fundraisers:We will be having out annual Swim-A-Long : TBA Any other fundraisers will be TBA.

Snack Bar:We do have a home meet August 5th. We do need snack donations for this snack bar to run, keep an eye out at front office for sign up page!

Thank you for your cooperation to make this Summer/Year a success!

Swim Team Parent Responsibilities

An athlete receives many benefits from training and competition: physical fitness, mental discipline, self-understanding, communication skills & friendships. The following behavior guidelines were created to ensure that we provide the best environment for all swimmers development while allowing them the opportunity to reach their individual goals.**Parents are the key part in helping coaches maintain these guidelines.**Swimmers will show RESPECT for others including: other swimmers, coaches, parents, Lifeguards, etc.

Swimmers shall obey all pool, facility rules & other rules that apply to the team. These include but are not limited to: No “horseplay” on deck, in the pool, or in the restrooms. NO RUNNING ANYWHERE in the facility No throwing equipment. NO HITTING, SPITTING, SPLASHING, etc.… While at the pool. Do NOT hang on the lane lines. It is not a flotation device. No littering on the deck. If you bring a water bottle to practice, please do not leave it on deck. Throw it away! SWIM TEAM IS NOT PLAY TIME. You are here to swim & continue to learn. Swimmers are here to work hard & learn.

NO BULLYING or HURTFUL WORDS. COACHES WILL SEND YOU HOME!!! Swimmers shall NEVER engage in disrespectful conduct of any sort including profanity, obscene gestures, offensive

remarks, trash talking, taunting, or any other actions that demean individuals or the sport. Keep your head above water and NO TALKING while the coach is talking. Stay on the wall at all times waiting for your coach to tell you the next swim set. Getting your equipment & putting your own equipment away is the swimmers responsibility not the coach or other

swimmers or the lifeguards. (Swimmers must put everything away at the end of practice) NO rash guards, board shorts. Only jammers (boys) & one pieces (girls). DO NOT RESERVE SHOWERS . There are too many kids on the team, SHARE your showers! STEALING = Zero Tolerance ! You will be suspended at the coaches discretion

As coaches we have the authority to suspend any swimmer from practices and/or swim meets due to inappropriate behavior. The parent/guardian below shall be notified of the suspension and circumstances by a coach as soon as possible. The suspension may result in dismissal of the swimmer from the swim team, depending upon the seriousness of the behavior. Any decision of dismissal shall be the joint decision of the coaches and the pool manager.

Overall swimmers need to be respectful to Team-mates, Coaches & Parents. Don’t be mean to others or say hurtful things. Parents, if your swimmer(s) tell you about inappropriate/hurtful behavior happening during swim team practice please inform the coaches ASAP so the appropriate actions can be taken. We want this team to be as fun/ safe for the kids as possible.

Parents are responsible for timely drop off & pick up their swimmers.

I, the understand, have read and agree to comply with the above guidelines. I further acknowledge that additional guidelines may become necessary. I will be notified of any additions or changes to the above. Parents also need to reassure your swimmer(s) of these rules at all times.

Even the most organized, well-planned swimmer can put nutrition on the backburner, jeopardizing access to essential fuel sources when they need it the most. Thankfully, some food items can stay in the swim bag, providing relief in situations where optimal food sources may be scant or not ideal. The following snacks require no refrigeration, are

temperature tolerant and provide a great fuel source. Remember to clean out snacks in the swim bag periodically and when the swim bag sits out in extremely hot temperatures.

Nuts and Nut Butters: Nuts provide a calorie kick and a boost of healthy fat and fiber in just a small handful. If you pack extra to share with friends PLEASE be conscious of potential swimmers with nut allergies. Dried Fruit and Dry Cereal: Better than a “fruit snack,” dried fruit is a concentrated source of carbohydrate

usually without added sugar. Try sealed bags or individual boxes of raisins, dried cherries, apricot, or mango. Cereal: Go for small boxes or make your own baggie of dry cereal. If you’re interested in low sugar types, opt for original Cheerios, Kix, Post Spoon-Size Shredded.

Beef Jerky: Low fat, lean meat cured into a chewy, salty, protein pick-me-up—stow a re-sealable package in the swim bag. Looking for a jerky with no additives or preservatives? Try Trader Joe’s, Costco or Whole Foods brands. Pretzels: Variety and portability are the appeal here—you

can find all shapes and sizes, with salt or without, and even whole grain, flavored or not. Choose small packages so they stay fresh, or bag your own.Fruits & Veggies: Loaded with vitamins C, E, A, and potassium, these help your immune system stay healthy. Bananas are very good for cramps!

In order to achieve top performance, most athletes eat a diet high in

antioxidants, which help them experience the best strength, endurance and disease resistance.

10 power foods every swimmer should eat

MOST IMPORTANTLY DRINK LOTS OF WATER!

Not sure what to

feed your swimmers?

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the following 10 foods have very high antioxidant capacity and offer superior health benefits.

Beans: Pinto, red and kidney beans pack both antioxidants and protein, making them one of the most beneficial super foods to promote both energy and health. Add them to salads or rice dishes to turn them into a meal.

Unsweetened dark chocolate: Whoever said eating healthy couldn’t taste good? When eaten in moderation, one square of dark chocolate offers exceptional antioxidant power.

Red Delicious and Granny Smith Apples:  Eating one apple per day helps your body fight against free radicals. When free radicals bond to body tissues, it can speed up the aging process and cause long-term health complications. They have even been linked to some autoimmune diseases and the development of cancer. Antioxidants help keep free radicals from bonding.Prunes: They are super foods with the ability to destroy aging. Eat a half a cup a

day.

Pomegranate juice: Good tasting and high in antioxidants, there’s plenty of reason to make pomegranate juice a regular drink of choice. Just make sure to dilute it 50:50 with water if it’s 100% pure to avoid getting a sugar rush and crashing.

Artichokes: Most people’s only exposure to artichokes is in spinach artichoke dip, but that’s not why artichokes made the list. When boiled or cooked in healthy recipes, artichokes are highly nutritious.

Pears: Pears contain an important fiber called pectin, which helps remove any harmful metals in the body through the bowels.

Pecans and walnuts: If you’re not allergic, these foods are high in many different vitamins and acids that promote high energy levels and balanced moods.

Bring on the berries: Cranberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries and strawberries are all rich in antioxidants. Throw them in the blender along with some yogurt and ice and you’ve got a delicious smoothie that adds energy back to your tired muscle cells. If you’re not into smoothies, add them to whole grain cereal or granola for breakfast.Russet and sweet potatoes: Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to feel guilty about eating potatoes. Russet potatoes are antioxidant-rich and are the perfect baked side dish to add to your dinner. Just make sure you don’t go crazy loading it up with butter, cheese and sour cream.  Sweet potatoes are rich with beta carotene, which helps promote endurance.
