BUOEThe Buffalo Urban Outdoor

Education program is a local program designed to teach residential youth more about the environment of Western New York. The students take this 5 hour long course on a traditionally rigged vessel called The Spirit of Buffalo.

The program combines knowledge about our local environmental issues and experiential knowledge acquired from working together to sail the boat. It builds Cooperation that can be used in later life.

The real advantage in this program lies in its close proximity and relatively low expense. It’s particular targeted audience is children who might not otherwise get a chance to participate in an outdoor education program.

Finding the Right Program for You

When looking for a good outdoor education program you must consider:

What you want to learn and achieve in your outdoor education experience.

Where you are comfortable going be it not far from home or halfway around the world.

The amount you are willing to pay although many programs provide tuition assistance.

How long of a program you want.

Outdoor education is not limited to these programs. Your school may even have different activities or special classes that you can take. It’s all about exploring your options.

What is the idea behind outdoor education?

Outdoor education is learning in a real environment. The idea is that knowledge is not only learned from a book or a teacher but then it is applied to real life circumstances. It brings the educator and the student closer because no one can be prepared for all the trials you will face in the outdoors. And most importantly outdoor education provides students with tools and lessons on how to preserve the outdoors so that others will be given the ability to learn in them.

NOLSNOLS is an extreme form of

outdoor education they have courses that last from a month to an entire academic year. The emphasis is mostly on the leadership aspects of an expedition. You learn not only how to survive in the wilderness but how to apply first aid, lead through various terrains, work together on cooking a meal, and on how to leave any area as though you have never been there.

The courses really build team work and you learn in what ways you tend to lead best at. Unfortunately the courses tend to be far away and are pretty pricey. They are completely worth the money though. It’s a great course for all of you who want to become serious about traveling in the outdoors.

Outward BoundOutward bound has many great

courses in the U.S. and elsewhere that provide great opportunities in wilderness survival. The aim of these courses is to increase character in a learning environment. Lots of emphasis is put on responsibility and there are many lessons on your impact on the environment.

One of the courses is aimed for troubled youth and is designed to help instill values in them. The idea is that when you remove someone from temptations and bad influences and put them with a group they have to work together with to survive in the wilderness as an alternative to incarceration. Outward Bound has been operating for over 60 years and still helps in the development of the young men and women of the future.
