OUR MISSIONTo prepare graduates for

prominent careers by:

the principles of engineering and

a broad-based knowledge of the

fundamentals of naval architecture

and marine engineering

graduates to become leaders in and

make significant contributions to their

chosen profession, and to the social

environment in which it functions

ethical standards and sense of

professionalism; cultivating curiosity

in the arts, sciences, and humanities,

and providing the background

and encouragement necessary

to support life-long learning

of William H. Webb

MISSION STATEMENTTo be internationally recognized as

a leading undergraduate educational

institution in naval architecture and marine

engineering and an asset to the nation by:

focused on naval architecture and marine

industry or other fields of endeavor

to the marine industry

academics by reducing the

size of the administrative

staff, freezing salaries,

and deferring capital

improvements. Secondly,

the Investment Committee

resolved to stay the course

with the endowment,

remaining fully invested

with a significant equity

position. This latter

decision allowed Webb’s

endowment to enjoy solid

returns as the market rebounded (see page 26).

Since 2009 Webb has maintained an austere

budget policy and has consistently finished within

budgetary projections at year end. The Board’s

Investment Committee, which oversees the

endowment, has done a truly exceptional job. As of

June 2013, the portfolio value exceeds $55 million.

None of this would have been possible without

the extraordinary generosity of our alumni. Our

annual giving rate of over 70% for alumni and over

80% for parents is the envy of other colleges and

universities. During the last eight years, alumni

giving at Webb has grown at a rate of 6% per annum.

This growth comes at a time when many colleges

have seen declining alumni participation. Well done!

Webb’s draw rate on its endowment remains higher

than desired, but we are on solid financial footing.

We have launched into the quiet phase of our next

capital campaign. One of the goals of this campaign

is to build the endowment to a level that will reduce

our draw to under 4.5% per year, a level considered

sustainable over future generations. It will allow us

to use special gifts for enhancing the Webb

educational experience and expanding our outreach.

Webb has a storied past and a very bright future. We

have much to be proud of.

WEBB INSTITUTE ANNUAL REPORT

This report covers the eighth and final year of Adm. Robert Olsen’s tenure as president of Webb Institute. In this Message from the President, I thought it appropriate to reflect on the accomplishments of those eight years, particularly with regard to financial matters.

The presidency of Adm. Olsen began in July of 2005.

Webb was in the final two years of a five year capital

campaign that would bring in nearly $9 million

in special gifts. Combined with the annual fund

contributions over that five year period, slightly

over $12 million was raised. By all standards, this

was Webb’s most successful capital campaign.

Although the endowment was well diversified in

2008, the stock market crash of 2008-2009 resulted in

dramatic reductions in value across nearly all asset

classes. Webb’s return on investment for calendar

year 2008 was -25.9%. This loss was less than the

... alumni giving at Webb has grown at a rate of 6% per annum.

This growth comes at a time when many colleges have seen declining

alumni participation. Well done!

median of our peer colleges but nevertheless the

damage was significant. By February 2009, our

endowment had dropped to under $38 million. At

that time, the Board of Trustees, working in close

concert with President Olsen, made two decisions

that would be instrumental in restoring the health

of Webb’s endowment. First, President Olsen was

requested to implement a series of budget cuts to

immediately reduce expenditures. President Olsen

managed these cuts without impacting student

WEBB INSTITUTE ANNUAL REPORT

are entering the

profession of naval

architecture and marine

engineering, a vocation

that undergirds what

is among humanity’s

oldest and still principal

foundations of global

commerce. Describing

the shipping industry in

the recently published

book, Ninety Percent of

Everything, Rose George

points out that people have been transporting

goods by sea for more than 4,000 years. Shipping

brings goods worth upwards of two trillion dollars

to American shores annually, including two-thirds

of its oil supplies. Our graduates are destined

to become leaders in this vital enterprise.

At the end of academic year 2013, we celebrated the

outgoing President, RADM Robert C. Olsen Jr., and his

eight years of dedicated service to the college. Under

his stewardship Webb maintained its illustrious

place among premiere American colleges and

universities. Going forward, higher education is

moving through an inflection point, facing some of

the most severe strategic challenges it has ever

faced: costs that continue to rise faster than

inflation, rapidly evolving delivery models, increased

regulatory pressures, accelerating technological

change, globalization across all occupational sectors,

increased competition for philanthropic dollars, and

a growing requirement for student services on

campuses. Seeking a new president with the

exceptional vision and leadership qualities to

confront these challenges successfully, the trustees

conducted a rigorous search process and

unanimously elected R. Keith Michel, Class of 1973,

to lead this institution of the first rank in these

critical years of the twenty-first century.

Standing Committed, Staying Optimistic In 2013 Webb Institute endures as one of a

vanishingly small number of American colleges

that guarantees every admitted student a full-

tuition scholarship, while delivering higher

education of unparalleled quality. As we approach

the 125th anniversary of the founding of Webb, it

is with enormous pride and singular pleasure that

I reaffirm our bold and unequivocal commitment

to this historic ideal. As the current academic year

unfolds, we will lay the groundwork for a new capital

campaign to generate the financial underpinning to

sustain, in perpetuity, the all-scholarship mission

and its attendant unique, egalitarian culture of

excellence. Members of the Board of Trustees have

already pledged significant support—above and

beyond their planned capital contributions—to fund

the essential start-up work for the campaign.

In my first year as chairman, I have had the privilege

of serving with a distinguished group of colleagues

on the Board. Working together, we modernized

our governance structure in consonance with the

substantial changes in regulation that have taken

place in recent years. We appointed new external

financial advisors and restructured our investment

portfolio to mitigate risk associated with market

downturns while maintaining solid returns. I have

also had the uncommon privilege of witnessing first

hand the intellectual, academic and professional

maturation of this year’s graduates under the

uncompromising demands and compassionate

guidance of a learned Webb faculty. Those graduates

Annual Giving exceeded expectations. The consistent

giving is an invaluable source of expendable support that

affects virtually every program, facility, faculty member

and student at Webb. Every contribution counts and helps

ensure the vitality of our unique and prestigious education.

In the pages that follow, we acknowledge all of our donors

in the Webb community for their generosity and loyalty—

Alumni, Trustees, Friends, Parents, Family, Faculty, Staff,

WILLIAM H. WEBBIn PerpetuityWebb has benefitted in many

ways through planned gifts left

by alumni and friends alike. It is

only proper that their generosity

be specifically memorialized in our

Annual Reports, both those who

have left major gifts and those

whose gifts are more modest but of

enduring value towards enhancing

the perpetuation of Webb’s legacy.

Recognition is shown in bold print

for a donor’s gifts, assuming a four

percent annual yield on the amount

of the gift, a value that reflects a

modest yield that reflects a benefit

in perpetuity. Remembering Webb

in our estate planning is one way

we can follow the example set

for us by our founder, William H.

Webb. If you are a member of

Webb’s Heritage Society, thank you;

if not, please consider joining.

WEBB INSTITUTE

One of my favorite things about Webb is participating in the Webb soccer team. I have played soccer my whole life, and being able to continue playing has been a lot of fun. Another one of my favorite things at Webb is singing in the Webb chorus, the WooFS. I had never tried singing in a chorus before and was surprised to find out how much I enjoy it. Finally, I enjoy the accessibility of all the facilities.

WEBB INSTITUTE

A ME SSAGE F ROM T HE A LUMN I A SSOC I AT ION

Could it be just a coincidence that next year (2014) marks the 125th anniversary of the founding of Webb Institute (check those numbers … 1-2-5) … and in anticipation

of that celebration, the 2012-13 Webb Alumni Fund

(WAF) posted another record year with annual fund

contributions of almost $1,250,000 (($1,246,363 to be

exact) – an increase of 5.5% over last year. The average

personal gift increased to $1,390 (up 4%), the average

total gift (including matching) increased to $1,666 (up

5.6%), and 310 alumni (41% of alumni donors) were

members of the William H. Webb (WHW) Society,

having contributed at least $1,000.

As impressive as $1,250,000 may sound, we didn’t quite

make our goal of $1,265,000, but if we were to include

the $118,000 in relatively modest “planned gifts” that

were realized from the estates of four Webb alums now

deceased (James Motley 1914, Allen Hoyt ‘36, Stephen

Dvorak ’50, and William Cleary ’51), the goal would have

been comfortably exceeded. Total gifts from alumni,

living and deceased, in 2012-13 were $1,365,000. We

encourage all alums to become members of the Webb

Heritage Society, which recognizes those who have the

foresight to provide for Webb in their estate planning.

CLASS AGENTS

12

In fact, this Annual Report begins a new practice of

identifying the “giving club in perpetuity” that results

from an assumed 4% annual yield from a planned gift.

In other words, a realized planned gift of $25,000 earns

that deceased alum recognition in every Annual Report

as “William H. Webb Society Member in perpetuity”

because $25,000 x 4% = $1,000 to Webb every year.

Overall participation by all living members of the

Webb Alumni Association was 69% for 2012-13, but

if we calculate participation based only on our living

13

2012–2013 ANNUAL REPORT

undergraduates (which is the standard practice for

comparison with other colleges), our participation for

2012-13 was an impressive 71%. We congratulate all

of our Class Agents for this achievement, particularly

those 14 whose classes achieved 100% participation:

’43, ’45, ’49, ’54, ’55, ’59, ’60, ’67, ’69, ’70, ’06, ’07, ’09, and

’13. We applaud the outstanding participation of the

eight most recent graduating classes (’06 – ’13)—an

impressive 92.1%. Clearly, Webb Institute remains

vibrant and relevant as its recent graduates show their

respect and affection through their financial support.

A notable highlight of 2012-13 was the re-establishment

of a team of Group Leaders who will coordinate and

support the Class Agents in their assigned groups

of classes. The Group Leaders are: Tom Manuel ’54,

Roger Compton ’61, Eric Runnerstrom ’69, Tony

Urbanelli ’75, Jen Panosky ’85, Jake Neuman ’93, Jason

Updegraph ’01, and Stefan Wolczko ’09. Looking

ahead to 2013-14, we are pleased to announce the

appointment of Stefan Wolczko ’09 as WAF Co-

Chair. In that capacity, he will take on increasing

responsibility for the operation of the annual WAF,

allowing the Alumni Fund Chairman to focus more

attention on the Major Donor and Planned Giving

components of our development and fundraising

program. Honorary alum Gailmarie Sujecki will take

WAF CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTION VS. GOALS

on an increased role in the WAF as the principal point of

contact at Webb for communication and correspondence

with Alumni, Class Agents, and Group Leaders.

The success of the Webb Alumni Fund depends on the

Board of Trustees’ Development Committee for their

leadership and guidance, our outstanding team of Class

Agents for their dedication and support, and the

Development Office staff for their enthusiasm and hard

work. As we approach the 125th anniversary of Webb

Institute, we are reminded that it is the generosity of the

748 Webb grads, postgraduates, and honorary alums

identified in the pages of this Annual Report that

perpetuates the legacy of William H. Webb to provide the

bright, eager, and deserving students of today and future

generations an extraordinary educational opportunity.

2012-2013 DONATIONSAlumni Giving by Class Year

Alumni giving is the cornerstone of Webb’s fundraising

foundation. It allows Webb to continue to grow and

provide the best educational experiences possible to

our students. Webb is especially grateful to its alumni

whose extraordinary loyalty manifests itself through one

of the highest alumni giving participation rates among

all colleges and universities anywhere in the world.

Webb’s dedicated Class Agents play an integral role

in helping increase alumni participation and revenue

by encouraging classmates to demonstrate an active

role in Webb’s future by supporting the school and

being involved in activities on and off campus.

Class Giving Summary

On Homecoming Weekend in

May, the Class of 1963 celebrated

their 50th Anniversary. They

have graciously designated their

reunion contributions to go

towards technology upgrades

in the Henry Auditorium.

These upgrades will help improve

and enhance a variety of aspects,

resulting in an improved presenter-

and-audience experience and

enhancing the staff’s control over the

system and their ability to capture

presentations. The improvements

include the purchase of a new

podium/technology cart, a new and

larger master control panel, and a

new screen and projector. Everyone

in the Webb community is grateful

for these state of the art upgrades.

The Class of 1973 is still raising funds

for their reunion class gift. They

have been discussing alternative

ideas about where to designate

their class’s contributions, currently

focusing on enhancing the public

Reunion time is a special time. For anniversary classes it’s an opportunity to show their

appreciation for the first-class education they received here at Webb Institute and a time to

celebrate and cherish the memories and friendships that began here years before. Contributing to

your reunion fund shows support for Webb—and offers inspiration to future generations of Webbies.

area of Stevenson Taylor Hall. They

had a fabulous time celebrating their

40th reunion, with a large portion

of their class attending with their

spouses or significant others.

Another reunion class that made a

significant donation to their reunion

fund was the Class of 1953, and we

wish to acknowledge them here

for their extreme generosity.

The success of Reunion Class Gift

initiatives would not be possible

without the work and dedication

of our ambitious class agents,

who work tirelessly to encourage

participation in Homecoming

Weekend and the Reunion Class Gift.

Today, the tradition of reunion

giving inspires some alumni to

make significant contributions in

addition to their annual Alumni Fund

gifts. These gifts strengthen alumni

participation in giving and encourage

ongoing annual giving. Reunion

campaigns account for a significant

portion of cash received by the

college each year, providing essential

funds for special, designated projects

or simply adding to Webb’s fund

for overall operating expenses.

In May 2014, we will be honoring the

anniversaries of all classes that ended

in fours or nines. If you are a part of

any of these classes, we hope you can

make a special contribution in

recognition of your reunion year—and

encourage your former classmates to

do the same! 21

Humorous, Generous, Devoted to Webb: ALLEN NOBLE HOYT ’36According to Webb Institute archives, Allen

Noble Hoyt was born in Detroit, Michigan, on June 11, 1912. He grew up in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, attending Cranbrook School in Bloomfield, where he graduated in the spring of 1931. Al was admitted to Webb Institute on September 21,

1931, and eventually graduated with his brother Edgar

in the Class of 1936. Al also had a cousin, Elbert Durfee

’40, who graduated from Webb. Al points out in a 2002

note to Webb that he “in fact spent 4 years with the

Class of ’35, eventually finishing with the Class of ’36.”

According to his nephew, Peter B. Hoyt, Al always had a

crisp sense of humor and an unending passion for Webb.

That passion would follow him throughout his life.

After graduating from Webb, Al was briefly involved

in the commercial marine business before taking his

talents to the Navy. He eventually became a project

manager at the David Taylor Model Basin where

Professor Emeritus Jacques Hadler was head of ship

powering. According to Hadler, Al tested streamlined

hull designs of submarine models that later became

designs used for attack submarines. Hadler added that

Al has a quiet professional with a sharp wit and an

interest in the stock market. In later years Al’s stock

market hobby would greatly benefit Webb Institute.

Al and his wife Cordella (Perkie) retired to his beloved home

in Clearwater, Florida, where they remained involved with

Webb. In a letter dated November 14, 1992, Al’s sense of

humor and love of Webb were again on display, as he wrote

Professor Edwin Dunbaugh in response to Bob Mende’s

letter requesting anecdotes from his time at Webb:

Prof. Dunbaugh-

Webb at Bronx still my choice. Five cents downtown, crumb bun and coffee

10 cents—just around the corner. Tolentine Gym across the street. Super

sledding and skating.

Watching Jim Henry do front flips. Astounding! Baseball team—

tennis also.

As for myself, I have the great distinction of probably being the only grad

so loved by faculty and school body that I was invited back for a fifth year!

Hence my ’36 designation though I started with the class of ‘35.

–ANH

Al’s involvement with Webb as a donor goes back many

years. He was interviewed for the Centennial Campaign

Feasibility Study in 1988 and became a “lead” donor to

the campaign. In 1986 Al was granted permanent status

as a member of the William H. Webb Society by Webb

President Benedict L. Stabile, VADM USCG (Ret.).

Today, in 2013, in honor of the very generous bequest of over

$1,000,000 from the Estate of Al and Cordella Hoyt, Webb

Institute is proud to announce that an Allen and Cordella

Hoyt Scholar will be named each year, recognizing their

generosity in perpetuity. It is gifts such as this that help

sustain and propel our beloved institution.

Webb Institute was founded through the vision and

philanthropy of William H. Webb. The tradition of

philanthropy continues today with over 70% of living alumni

supporting Webb on an annual basis. The ultimate result of

this generosity is evidenced through significant planned

gifts. For these, Webb Institute is extremely grateful.

COUCH LAB:

One of the most innovative gifts Webb Institute has ever received started with

a vision—and some conversations. In 2007, Dr. John C. Couch began discussions with

institutional leadership regarding Webb Institute’s

need to provide its students with state-of-the-art

computer technology. These conversations, along with

Dr. Couch’s vision of students utilizing technology

with enhanced processing power and graphic display

capacity to run industry-leading design software,

led to an extraordinary innovation at Webb.

In 2007, a $500,000 gift from Dr. Couch launched the

Richard B. Couch ’33 Ship Design and Enhanced Classrooms

fund, creating what would be known as the “Couch

Lab.” Established in memory of Dr. Couch’s father, who

graduated from Webb in 1933 and went on to a career

as an esteemed professor of naval architecture at the

University of Michigan, this gift provided the initial

capital to create the Richard B. Couch ’33 Laboratory

and to enhance technology in the classrooms. Currently

the fund is used to support operating and maintenance

costs for the lab and classrooms, and to help defray the

cost of various design software programs for students.

Since its inception the fund has proven to be a key source

of funding that has enabled Webb Institute to upgrade

its computer processing capacity for the entire campus

community. It has also given students state-of-the-art

technology in the classroom, with the hardware and

software necessary to fully utilize industry-leading design

A Son’s Gift of Innovation Honors a Father’s Vision

programs. This kind of access to first-rate technology,

combined with real-world work experience gives

Webb graduates a huge head start in their careers.

The “Couch Lab” plays an instrumental role in Webb’s

curriculum. The lab is used by students for collaborative

study space to work on design projects. Several theses

have taken advantage of the lab’s parallel processing

capabilities, which significantly reduce the time

required for advanced CFD (Computational Fluid

Dynamics) and FEM (Finite Element Method) analyses.

Classroom upgrades, specifically the acquisition and

implementation of large-screen monitors, have allowed

students to utilize more fully relevant software, including

cutting-edge design programs. In the ever-changing

world of technology, what seemed like a luxury a few

years ago has become a necessity as Webb strives to

maintain its leadership role as a premier institution

of naval architecture and marine engineering.

Recently, Dr. Couch has agreed to increase his

commitment to the Richard B. Couch ’33 Ship Design

and Enhanced Classrooms fund by an additional

$500,000. This new commitment will be a vital building

block in the upcoming Capital Campaign. According

to President Keith Michel, “John’s leadership role

as a volunteer and donor is evidence of his belief

in Webb’s mission and vision moving forward.”

Today Dr. John C. Couch serves on Webb Institute’s Board

of Trustees as chair of the Investment Committee. He

resides in Menlo Park, California.

SCHOLARSHIPS & ENDOWMENTS

“To achieve greatness: start where you are, use what you have, do what you can.”

Arthur Ashe

Webb Institute’s unique financial model is predicated upon our

ability to attract funds that support our students, faculty and

staff—for a variety of purposes.

Webb provides full-tuition scholarships to every admitted

student, making endowment, scholarship, and programmatic

fund proceeds vital to funding the institution.

From the start Webb Institute has relied upon its endowment,

initially through funds provided by William H. Webb and later

through the generosity of alumni, family, and friends. At Webb

these funds are the very lifeblood that has helped sustain our

institution from the beginning.

The concept is as relevant today as it was in 1889, when William

H. Webb established the original endowment. Webb is supported

by a variety of funds, including endowed professorships,

scholarships, and other funds designated for various purposes.

Webb is a magical place supported by extraordinary donors.

Scholarships, need or merit-based, are available to all students

or are targeted for specific purposes—and they help Webb attract

and retain the best and brightest young minds.

Following is a list of various endowments and scholarships. On behalf of the entire institution, we want to thank everyone who has contributed or helped support Webb in one way or another with any of these most significant gifts .

WPA: The Bond of a Family

A hearty thank you to those Webb parents who enthusiastically added their voice in support

of Webb's model of full-tuition model by generously contributing to the 2012-2013 Webb

Annual Fund. The Webb community is beyond grateful. Thank you for your vote of confidence!

As shown in the table below, 81% of parents of current students donated a total of $92,995 to

the Annual Fund. In addition to these gifts, grandparents of current and past Webb students

were generous contributors.

Thanks to the leadership of Steve Guglielmoni P'12, Webb received an additional $70,980 from

parents of Webb graduates. Ongoing financial support from parents after their child's

graduation demonstrates a continuing high regard for a Webb education.

Fall Semester 2013 marks the fifth anniversary of the Webb Parents Association — and

the beginning of a new year, when parents of incoming freshmen and the freshmen

themselves are joining the Webb family. Whether or not parents of current students

or alumni join the WPA, they are still members of the Webb family, but joining is

important. The WPA was created so that parents, friends, and alumni have a venue

in which to support each other and Webb, as they take part in this journey through

the unique experience that William H. Webb envisioned all those years ago.

The WPA has become home base for many parents when they visit the campus their children will

call home for close to nine months of the year. When parents come to Webb, they find a warm

welcome: the members of the WPA have become interwoven into the fabric of the Webb family and on behalf of the

WPA can demonstrate support to everyone. As parents,

we naturally bond when our interests are similar; as

Webb parents our common desire is to help Webb and its

family members succeed. That’s just what parents do.

When parents join the Webb Parents Association, they

will have the opportunity to understand how we, in our

roles as Webb parents, can be involved with helping each

other, the student members of the Webb family and,

Webb Institute itself.

2012-2013 DONATIONS

Extraordinary feats require extraordinary tools to get the job done, and the equipment found in the Couch Lab is nothing short of that. When tasked with designing a containership from the ground up, the seniors of Webb Institute can rely on top- of-the-line computers and monitors to help them along. The Couch Lab has and will be an integral part of our senior design project this year, and we’re incredibly lucky to have access to it.

WEBB INSTITUTE

A number of Webb Alumni have taken action to help sustain William H. Webb’s vision by including Webb Institute in their estate planning. Members of Webb’s Heritage Society know the value of their planned gifts will help sustain Webb well beyond their lifetime.

Planned giving has become an important dynamic within institutional giving in today’s economic times. It allows individuals to make large gifts that cost little or nothing today. While some planned gifts provide a life-long income to the donor, others use estate and tax planning techniques to provide for educational institutions and other family members/heirs in ways that maximize the gift and/or minimize its impact on the donor's estate.

Ultimately, a planned gift is any gift made in a person’s lifetime or at death as part of a donor’s overall financial and/or estate planning. Whether a contributor uses cash, appreciated securities/stock, real estate, artwork, partnership interests, personal property, life insurance, a retirement plan, etc., the benefits of funding a planned gift can make this type of charitable giving a great incentive to both you as a donor and Webb as an institution.

During fiscal year 2012–2013, Webb benefitted substantially from the generosity of alumni who included Webb in their long-term financial planning. They are William A. Cleary Jr. ’51, Stephen C. Dvorak ’50, Allen N. Hoyt ’36 and James G. Motley 1914.

There are many ways to give substantial support to Webb Institute while protecting and enhancing your family’s financial situation. To learn more about giving a planned gift contact our Office of Development at (516) 759-2040.

Thank you to our most current Heritage Society members for their extreme generosity and for believing in a Webb education and investing in the future of so many.

2012–2013 ANNUAL REPORT

It is not often that a Webb student, having done poorly in a challenging course, is given a second chance, so I am especially appreciative of being given a second chance at chairing Webb’s Development Committee. I hope I have learned something in the 25 years since my first “course” in this role.

So much has changed from those days, when we

undertook the Centennial Capital Campaign and

when annual giving, primarily the Annual Alumni

Fund, had a goal in the $250,000 range. Today annual

giving has increased to $2,000,000 or more, and the

Annual Alumni Fund, guided by John Malone ’71, has

exceeded $1,000,000 for several consecutive years.

We benefit from a growing Parents’ Annual Fund,

thanks to Alison and Hal Granger P’14. We have

established the Admiralty Club to recognize and

encourage corporate and foundation gifts; we have

three endowed professorships, one funded through

a planned gift by Stephen R. Towne ’40; one by a

friend of Webb, John J. McMullen; and the third by

ABS. We have also attracted significant support from

several foundations. We have a first-class computer

laboratory, made possible through the generosity

of Trustee John Couch; an annual scholarship

program with two full-tuition scholarships funded

by ABS, and thanks to the generosity of alumni,

initiated by Al Zeien ’52, our scholarship program

is off to a strong start. With planned gifts from

Al Hoyt ’36, and H. Smith McKann ’38, we now

have three endowed full-tuition scholarships.

Successful as fundraising has been, the escalating

costs of providing a “best in class” higher education

and the impact of

tumultuous financial

markets continue to

challenge us. It is a

challenge Webb will meet.

Webb prides itself on being

unique: the only remaining

private engineering college

that has provided full-

tuition scholarships to all

students from the day it was

founded. We are committed

to doing everything possible

to strengthen Webb’s financial foundation and to

assure continuation of this policy in years to come.

The demand for well-educated engineers—and

Webb graduates—continues to exceed supply.

As we undertake this ambitious capital campaign,

we have engaged a highly respected fundraising

consultant to guide us and a professional grant

writer to help us seek greater support from

foundations and other philanthropic sources. We

are refining the case for “Why Webb?” to attract

greater participation within and beyond the Webb

family. The continued support of all members of

the Webb family will be essential to our success.

It is a great privilege to be a part of this initiative,

my “Swan Song” to cap off my thirty-plus years

as a trustee of what I believe to be the finest

engineering college, offering the broadest and most

comprehensive engineering education, anywhere in

the world, Webb Institute.

Successful as fundraising has been, the escalating costs of providing a “best in class” higher education and the impact of tumultuous financial

markets continue to challenge us. It is a challenge Webb will meet.

ABS and Webb Enjoy Beneficial RelationshipWebb Institute’s relationship with the American Bureau of Shipping continues to

evolve to the benefit of both organizations. It’s a win-win situation when Webb

students enjoy exciting “Winter Work” internships with ABS, many of which lead

to exciting, mutually beneficial career opportunities. But the relationship between

Webb and ABS goes deeper than that—far beyond a “working” relationship—as

ABS President and CEO Christopher J. Wiernicki is currently a member of Webb

Institute’s Board of Trustees.

Additional linkages are found in the ABS Scholarship Program, which provides

the equivalent of two full-tuition scholarships to support deserving engineering

and naval architecture students based on GPA, class rank, leadership ability,

faculty recommendations, and service to Webb Institute. ABS also supports Webb

Institute through the ABS Chair of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering,

established in 2010.

The ABS scholarship program was established at Webb Institute in 2012 with the

intention of providing student scholarships for the foreseeable future. Jonathan

J. Soja ’13 and Samantha Griswold ’14 were ABS scholars for 2012-13. In what will

become an annual event, a current junior will be named an ABS Scholar and will

hold that title through his or her senior year.

According to Dean Richard P. Neilson, “Webb Institute is very grateful for these

generous scholarship awards. The ABS Scholarship Program certainly helps us to

prepare new generations of graduates entering into the marine and offshore

industries. We look forward to working closely with ABS for years to come.”

WEBB INSTITUTE ANNUAL REPORT

A Tale of TwoFoundations,Both Benefitting Webb

Webb Institute is proud of the relationship it has

developed over a number of years with two related and influential foundations, The Ambrose Monell Foundation and The G. Unger Vetlesen Foundation. The beginnings of the relationships can be found in the mission statement for both foundations: “voluntarily aiding and contributing to religious, charitable, scientific, literary, and educational uses and purposes, in New York, elsewhere in the United States and throughout the world.”

The relationship can also

be traced to a “commuting”

relationship between Webb

Trustee Emeritus Pat Gilmartin

and a very special friend of

Webb Institute, George Rowe.

The relationship between the

foundations and Webb has

continued to grow over the past

few years to include Ambrose

Monell III and Maurizio Morello.

The combined interest of

everyone involved has resulted

in a growing bond between

these foundations and Webb

Institute. In fact, the financial

support Webb currently enjoys

from The G. Unger Vetlesen

Foundation began with

relatively modest annual gifts

through The Ambrose Monell

Foundation. Today, the support

Webb receives annually has

grown to $50,000 through the

G. Unger Vetlesen Foundation.

Gifts at this level are especially

important to Webb Institute,

as a $50,000 gift effectively

supports one student’s education

for one year. Together with

other named and endowed

scholarships and funds, annual

gifts allow Webb to maintain its

full-tuition scholarship policy.

Ambrose Monell and G. Unger

Vetlesen were both very

successful men in their business

careers. Ambrose Monell was CEO

of International Nickel Company.

A series of nickel alloys, known

as “Monel” was trademarked

Special Metal Corporation and

named in Mr. Monell’s honor.

Born in Oslo, Norway, G. Unger

Vetlesen earned degrees in naval

architecture and mechanical

engineering from the Imperial

Institute of London. In 1916, he

immigrated to the United States

and worked in the shipbuilding

industry before joining the

U.S. Navy. He was founder

and chairman of the board of

Scandinavian Airlines System.

The entire Webb Institute

community is very grateful to

both foundations. Webb’s mission

to provide a rigorous education is

a perfect fit to the foundations’

missions to aid and contribute to

educational purposes.

Conference and Culture Come Together at WebbThrough its Maritime Conference initiative, the TK

Foundation supported student attendance at both SNAME

(Providence, R.I.) and OTC (Houston, Texas) in FY ’13.

Seniors and juniors benefit greatly from industry specific

conferences; according to Dean Neilson, “real-world

maritime industry exposure for our students through

conferences is a valuable part of their education.”

In 2012, Norm and Kitty Wallin PG’62 established the

Cultural Enrichment Fund which has quickly become a

student favorite. This fund supports cultural initiatives

for Webbies in the New York City Metropolitan area,

and this past year the fund helped students experience

Broadway first-hand. The Culture Club is planning

additional activities for FY ’14. Thank you for your

support, Norm and Kitty.

The Webb Every Year Program (WebbEY) was established during

the 2006-2007 Annual Fund Campaign. Initially, this program

was created to acknowledge alumni donors for their consecutive

years of giving. Eventually, it was extended to include other

members within our community and now recognizes family

and friends. Gift amount is irrelevant; our WebbEY program was

created strictly to recognize our donors’ consistency of support.

In order to attain the status of becoming a WebbEY, a donor

has to contribute to the Annual Fund for a minimum of five

consecutive years. To show our appreciation to our consecutive

giving donors, Webb Institute now mails a pin along with a

certificate to those in the five, 25 and 50-year consecutive giving categories. Certificates are

also sent to contributors who are in the 10 and 20-year consecutive giving categories.

Consecutive giving allows Webb to plan for a future with assurance and to continue to

be recognized as the premier college of naval architecture and marine engineering. We

wish to thank the following contributors for their loyalty and generosity and for attaining

the distinct honor of achieving status as a 50, 25, 20, 10 or five-year WebbEY donor.

2012–2013 ANNUAL REPORT

Each year during a student’s four-year experience here

at Webb, he or she will engage in a different type of

Winter Work opportunity during January and February.

Freshmen work in shipyards, sophomores work on

large vessels or container ships, and juniors and seniors

engage in a variety of positions in engineering and

design firms nationally and globally.

Our students not only gain “hands on, real life” work

experience through this program, but also learn what

kind of work environment may best suit them in the

real world—and they do so long before they complete

their Webb education. The program also enhances

their lives by allowing them to experience these unique

positions, as well as traveling to places abroad that

they may otherwise never experience. This program

also provides exceptional networking opportunities for

students; they interact with alumni and companies that

can assist them in their futures when looking to secure

employment.

We wish to thank those companies and alumni for

providing these unique work opportunities for our

students during our 2013 Winter Work Term.

WEBB INSTITUTE

The overall return on investment of 14.5% realized in FY13

enabled an 8% growth in the endowment after accounting for the draw to support operations. The endowment is now over one-third higher than its lowest point following the economic downturn of 2008-2009, with investments totaling $53,768,269.

As shown in Table 1, Webb’s current year and longer term annualized returns compare favorably with our peers. Our 1, 3, 5 and 10 year average returns lie well above the top quartile returns of endowments for higher education as reported in the 2013 NACUBO-Commonfund Study of Endowments. The Webb Investment Committee provides oversight of our investments. John Couch, former CEO of Alexander and Baldwin and Chairman of CM Capital, serves as chairman of the Investment Committee, having succeeded Jon LaBerge in November 2012. During FY13, Cambridge Associates was contracted to provide investment advisory services. C|A, one of the world’s leading financial advisors for colleges and universities, succeeded Merrill Lynch as Webb’s investment advisor.

Webb’s Investment Policy Statement was revised in October 2012. The IPS establishes a goal of earning an average real annual return of 5% on a sustainable long-term basis. The real return is the total return (net of investment management fees) adjusted for inflation. The IPS calls for a diversified allocation and sets

policy target values as follows: 55%

Global Equity, 10% Diversifiers, 14%

Real Assets, 18% Fixed Income,

and 3% Cash. The policy defines

permissible ranges about the

target values, to allow minor shifts

as a result of market movements

without forced rebalancing,

and to allow the committee to adopt tactical over/under weight allocations when appropriate.

As shown in Table 2, Revenue was down $1,279,682 for the year, primarily due to a reduction in the receipt of major planned gifts. Total Revenue & Support increased

by $5,007,266 due to the strong returns on the endowment.

Operating expenses increased from $6,596,550 in FY12 to $7,210,896 in FY13. In FY12, we were operating without one faculty member and one member of the development department. In FY13, gift revenue from pledges was written down by $173,865. After adjustment for these significant expenses, the increase in operating expenses is 4%. Table 3 shows total expenditures (operating expenditures plus capital expenditures).

The chart in Figure 1 illustrates the breakdown of operating expenses by function. Instruction (faculty, laboratories, etc.), Academic Support (non-faculty academics, library, etc.), Student Services (student activities, non-tuition scholarships, etc.), and Auxiliary Enterprises (primarily food service)

comprise 70% of overall expenses. In FY13, 53% of operating expenses were for salary and benefits. Other large expense items included food services (7%), Utilities (5%), Insurance (3%) and Depreciation (8%).

At the end of FY2013, Webb loan debt stood at $1,088,098. The remainder of liabilities consisted of payables. As shown in Table 4, Webb’s Net Assets grew by 6.2% over FY13.
