The new Webster City high schoolcompetition gym means many thingsto many different people, but for ath-letic director Bob Howard, it meansprogress.
Howard, also the head footballcoach of the Lynx, saidthat when he came toWebster City six yearsago, one of his goals wasto be proactive and pushfor further athletic facili-ties.
After years of plan-ning, pushing the bondissue and educating aboutthe one-cent sales tax, Howard saidthe gym is nearly completed. Onlytouch-ups, inspections and graphicsremain, and the latter will not go upuntil the day before the Aug. 5 openhouse. Howard said he is one of half adozen people that have seen the gym— other than construction crews —before the open house.
“We want there to be some anticipa-tion, we want there to be some buildupand we want there to be some shockand awe when you walk in that placefor the first time,” Howard said.
The new gym will provide manyimprovements, even for programswhich don't compete in the gym itself. He said football players used to storetheir equipment in the ceiling abovethe wrestling room at the old facility. This year, they have a locker roomthat is 70 feet long and 30 feet wide
with 60 full-sized lockers for varsityplayers and 76 half lockers for fresh-men. Comparatively, Howard said thenew facility is a luxury for athletes.
However, athletes won't be the onlyto reap the benefits of the new gym.Howard said the bond issue for thenew gym seemed to be a tough sellonly weeks after Electrolux closed. However, it passed with more than 80percent approval. He said critics have
asked why it's worth spending moremoney on athletics, but he said it willbenefit the town as a whole.
“I know from experience that whenpeople come to town to look at movingbusinesses or families, they'll first goto their potential job site, place theywant to start a business or a potentialhome. The second place they go is theschool,” Howard said
Having a nice, attractive and state of
the art athletic facility will also bringmore people to town for postseasonplay. Howard said locations for post-season games won't be announceduntil fall. But, he said he expects vol-leyball, basketball and wrestlingmatches to come to town. He saidthose matches will bring teams, familyand fans to spend their money in

Webster City. As athletic director, Howard has
overseen some of the design of thenew gym, but said he was moreinvolved in selling the idea of thegym. While he acknowledges there arepeople who are not and will not behappy with the new facility, as it ishard to transition from somewhere asrenowned as Jefferson gym, he saidthe people who use the gym will trulyenjoy it.
“No matter what you do, there'salways going to be people that don'tlike it. I mean, that's just one of thetough things with change is that usual-ly the only people that really likechange are the ones that are involvedwith causing it,” Howard said.
“The main people I'm concernedwith are the kids and they're going tolove it.”
Howard said his athletes have
worked hard to produce one of thebest years in Lynx sports in a longtime, and they have a lot of pride inhaving a new facility. He said therewill be peer pressure amongst athletesto keep the place clean, which is whathe and other coaches want.
Practice in the new gym will beginon Aug. 6, the day after the openhouse. The first event will be a volley-ball match on Sept. 6, Webster Cityversus St. Edwards.

Technically speaking
By JIM KRAJEWSKI
The new high school gym willhave technology comparable tomany collegiate facili-ties, according toWebster City communi-ty schools director oftechnology MarkMurphy.
A new high resolutionvideo board is the cen-terpiece of the newgym’s technological ability, whichwill provide live coverage of thegame with playback and instantreplay ability. Murphy said studentswill be staffing the upgraded controlroom and will shoot the majority ofhome games themselves.
“It’s not the Jeff gym of old. Welove that venue but this is the future.I think when people see it they’rereally going to like it.,” Murphysaid. “I don’t think anybody has gotour style of court around.”
Students will be using seven newhigh definition cameras. Three ofthose cameras are mounted on theceiling of the gym, while theremaining four are mounted on thewestern and eastern walls. Murphy
said it gives WCTV almost totalcoverage of the gym.
Four stations control the cameraswith monitors and joysticks. One ofthose will be used by coach’s assis-tants to record games for coachesand athletes and can be ripped toDVD for playback or archival stor-age.
Ambient microphones in the gymwill pick up game and audiencesound for playback and broadcast-ing. Murphy said the facility pro-vides a unique experience for stu-dents.
“The kids will be the camera, video board and sound system oper-ators. They’ll have help, but it’slargely just them producing andbroadcasting games. It doesn’t getmuch more hands-on than that,”Murphy said.
Much of the new technology willbenefit the fans as well. In additionto what is run by student producers,a new Bose sound system has beeninstalled. A meeting room off to theside of the gym features a motorizedscreen and projector system forplayback.
Both a 65-inch and a 42-inch TVwill be installed in the lobby.
Murphy said fans will be able tocontinue watching the game whilegrabbing a snack at the concessionstands or watch sports on cable dur-ing day-long sporting events at thegym. Fans will also have openaccess to a wireless network that hasbeen installed in the gym.
A new fiber-optic backbone sys-tem has also been installed for videocomponents so that there in no elec-trical interference between the
newer and older sections of thebuilding.
Murphy said WCTV has been onthe air for 14 years. The programstarted out with five students andone room using standard definitiontechnology. It has since expanded to35 students that have a controlroom, a television studio, a meetingroom and plenty of storage space.

Murphy said the stepup in technologicalpower will be a boonfor all.
“The advantage thesekids have is great. They actually get toman the stuff that’sbeing used by real tele-vision stations and realcollegiate gyms,”Murphy said.
The program isexpanding this year toinclude a new broad-
casting class that willlearn to use the equip-ment to cover games atthe gym. The WCTVprogram also encom-passes an elementaryand middle school pro-gram that produceweekly 10 minuteshows for students.
Murphy, who had asupervisory role in theinstallation of newtechnology at the gym, said he thinks people
will be very impressedwith the new facility’scapabilities when theysee the new technologyin action.
“We had a group ofsix people preview thesound system and itblew them away. Ithink when peoplecome and see thevenue they’re reallygoing to be taken backwith how nice it is,”Murphy said.

A dream becomes reality
By JIM KRAJEWSKI
The journey from Jeff gym to thenew Webster City High School com-petition gym began six years ago, according to superintendent MikeSherwood.
In March of 2006, the schoolboard did a structural, mechanicaland electrical evaluation of all theirfacilities. Sherwood said they werenearly maxed out in their electricalcapacity at the high school andupgraded it for the possibility offuture additions to the building.
From there, the board formed acommittee composed of communitymembers to tour all of their facilitiesand discuss what projects theywould like to move forward with.
“There was good discussion on allpotential projects, and [the commit-tee] decided if there was going to bea project, it should be a major proj-
ect first,” Sherwood said. “Thatproject was a competition gym highschool addition.”
Sherwood said the project alsoaddressed other needs of the highschool, including a lobby for theauditorium, another classroom andmore locker room space.
The board held public meetings toget proposals in front of the commu-nity and get input on initial plans forthe gym. After that, architects didtheir final adjustments and the boardmoved forward with a motion tohold a general election bond issue. Sherwood said the bonds sold werea supplement to the statewide pennytax. The district passed a penny taxpurpose statement, but had to decidewhether to sell general obligationbonds or revenue bonds. He saidrevenue bonds were a tough sell atthe time, but also that the schoolboard wanted to see how much sup-
port the project had through a publicvote. They moved forward withplans for general obligation bondsand formed a general election bondissue.
The bond issue passed with 86percent approval Sherwood said.
“We’re using the statewide pennydollars to pay it all down, but if weran out of money or if somethingelse happened then It would go tothe taxpayer with the general obliga-
tion bonds,” Sherwood said. “I thinkthis bond issue demonstrated thatthe community is very proud of theirschool district.”
The project then went to bid.
Sherwood said bids were very com-petitive. There was a $500,000 dif-ference between the highest andlowest bids, and $20,000 betweenthe lowest two bids and constructioncosts came in under projection.
Planning for new facility began more than six years ago
“Jeff gym is a wonderful facility, but we’ve
outgrown it. There’s so much going on
now with so many activities that we just
ran out of space.”Mike Sherwood

In addition to many ofthe technological bene-fits the new gymoffers, Sherwood saidit also offers morespace for the commu-nity. Practice times forathletics will be mucheasier to accommodatewith the increasedspace and Jeffersongym now just for jun-ior high activities. He said the school isalso looking at bring-ing large communityand statewide events tothe gym.
The transition to thenew facility fromJefferson gym has had
mixed reactions fromthe community, butSherwood said the dis-trict needs the upgrade.
“Jeff gym is a won-derful facility, butwe’ve outgrown it.There’s so much goingon now with so manyactivities that we justran out of space,”Sherwood said. “Itserved the district andcommunity wonderful-ly for years, but likeanything, timeschange.”
Sherwood said thecommunity has alwaysbeen very supportingof their schools and he
appreciates their sup-port. He said the bondelection vote demon-strated their support formodernization and tomake their facilities asnice as possible for theyoung people in theircommunity.
The ribbon cuttingfor the new gym at 2p.m. on Aug. 5 will goto 5 p.m. and givecommunity members achance to tour thefacility, see demonstra-tions of the new tech-nology and get infor-mation from those whohave worked on thefacility.

Ready for the openingBy ANNE BLANKENSHIP
Jake Peterson of PetersonConstruction, the contractorfor the new competition gym, said he's excited for local resi-dents and sports fans to gettheir first look at the new com-petition gym. They'll have thatchance as the school districtopens the doors to the facilityfor the first time on Aug. 5.
As a graduate of WebsterCity High School and a formerhigh school athlete himself,Peterson he has enjoyed work-ing on the project.
“It's been fun,” he said.“This project definitely meanta lot to me.”
“I wish that this facilitywould have been here five orsix years ago when I was inschool,” he said. “We neverwould have dreamed that wewould have something likethis.”
Peterson has been oversee-ing work at the site for the pastfew months. He said that thecrews have been workingsteadily and are on track forthe official opening. The crewsare finishing the detail workand cleaning ahead of the openhouse.
Peterson Construction wasawarded the contract for thenew facility back inSeptember 2010. Groundbreaking was held in October
2010 and work began immedi-ately to prepare the ground fornew addition. While not muchwas done during the wintermonths, Peterson said, con-struction began in earnest inMay of last year. The structurewas totally enclosed byThanksgiving 2011. Therecent mild winter and earlyspring aided the constructionproject along the way.
Peterson's bid came in at justunder $8 million. A generalobligation bond measure wasoverwhelmingly approved bythe community. The bondswill then be paid off withfunds from the one-centstatewide sales tax, whichmeans that no property taxburden for community resi-dents.
Peterson said the 48,000square-foot-addition is not justthe gym, but the projectincludes several other spaces.
“There's four locker rooms— two for boys, two for girls;a couple of lobbies and con-cession stands,” he said. Oneof the lobbies is outside thegym while the other is locatedjust outside the school audito-rium.
“The auditorium really has-n't had anything like this,” hesaid. “This will provide a niceentry into the auditorium andspace for intermissions duringplays or performances.”
The lobby will also featurebigger restrooms and a con-cession stand.
