Did you know ?
Fences can provide privacy and transform backyards into calming places to relax and unw ind. But fences also may lead to disputes w ith neighbors if installation is not carried out w ith etiquette. Alw ays place the fence w ithin your property lines, w hich can be determined by examining a land survey for your home. Inform your neighbors of your intention to erec t a fence, and give any concerns they might have substantial consideration. Face the more aesthetically appealing side of the fence outw ard to the street and to neighbors’ yards. In addition, maintain the fence once it is installed so it does not become a neighborhood eyesore that irks your neighbors.

Me and My Partner By Patricia Cappotelli
This is the story of the connection between me and a beautiful bay colt that I fell in love with and raised. Partner was born on March 16, 1991, with a large white blaze shaped like a backward question mark on his forehead.
When he was a weanling, we purchased a little black colt so he would have a playmate to grow up with. Every day I would go to the stable on my lunch hour and hand feed him to be sure he would grow up big and strong and to make an everlasting bond between us. When he became a yearling and was turned out in a pasture at a nearby farm, I went every day and brought him and his friend carrots. No matter where he was way out in the field, when I called out “Partner” he would come running to the fence.
That fall he went into training with my husband to become a race horse. My family had always been in the horse racing business, but I had never really learned how to harness them. Now that I had my own horse that I trusted completely, I wanted to be his handler at the track. I learned how to harness him and went to the tracks with him when he raced. Unfortunately, after several years of racing he broke a coffin bone in a race. This is a very serious injury that requires at least a year’s stall rest to heal; even then there is no guarantee of a return to racing.
Since we do not own a farm of our own and stabling space was limited, my husband made the business decision to sell Partner. I was heartbroken and couldn’t even go to the stable to say goodbye to him. I’m sure he was confused as to why I left him, but I never forgot him and kept his picture on the wall (where it still is today). Time passed and a fellow horseman at the track told us that Partner had a good home. This made me very happy. However, a year or so later he told us that Partner had died after a fencing accident. As years went by, whenever horse stories were discussed I always talked about my deceased friend.
Imagine my complete shock when I recently
went to my Facebook page and saw a video of someone leading my former horse down the aisle of a killer pen in PA with this caption: “Hia Partner, 24 years-old, needs donations to save him from being slaughtered.” I felt sick, wondering where he had been all these years and why anyone would mistreat this gentle, innocent animal. Tears ran down my face as I messaged a girl I had just met who founded ROC Standardbred to find “after racing” homes for Standardbreds. She immediately went into action, along with LifeHorse, soliciting money to bail Partner out of the pen. I also posted on my Facebook page that help was needed.
The next morning I received a call telling me that enough money had been raised and Hia Partner was on his way to Breezy Hill Stables in Maryland. I was told a dear friend of mine put up all of the remaining money to save him.
Since then, I have seen pictures of Partner at the rescue stable and was happy to see he was with another black horse like the one he originally grew up with. Life takes strange turns, sometimes good and sometimes bad. I hope Partner gets to live peacefully the rest of his life, and if he is anywhere nearby I would love to visit him one more time. I wonder what he would say to me if he could talk, but I know I would say to him “I am so sorry that I couldn’t protect you from such a terrible life.”

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On March 16, 1978, the oil tanker Amoco Cadiz wrecks off the

open the hull immediately, releasing the oil where it was, much
of the 68 million gallons of oil drifted to the coast.
Eating right can improve quality of life
Legend states that on April 2, 1513, Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León was the first European to discover modern-day Florida when he traveled on a quest for the mythical “Fountain of Youth.” While modern science has proven that there is no mystical fountain or body of water that can reverse or slow down the aging process, there are many steps people can take to age well and prolong their lives.
Eating the right foods is one way to age well. According to Ralph Felder, M.D., Ph.D., coauthor of “The Bonus Years Diet,” reversing the aging process internally is more difficult than outward cosmetic changes. But the right foods can go a long way toward increasing both life expectancy and quality of life. Those who want to employ diet to increase their life expectancy may want to start adding more of the following foods to their breakfast, lunch and dinner plates.
· Broccoli, grapes and salad: According to Health magazine, researchers have found that compounds in these three foods boast extra life-extending benefits.
· Berries: In addition to their abundance of antioxidants, berries have other benefits. A 2012 study from Harvard University found that at least one serving of blueberries or two servings of strawberries each week may reduce the risk of cognitive decline in older adults.
· Fruits and vegetables: Produce is good for the body because it’s low in calories and high in fiber, vitamins and other nutrients. Numerous studies have indicated that diets plentiful in fruits and vegetables help people maintain a
healthy weight and protect against cardiovascular disease.
· Whole grains: Whole grains pack a lot of nutrition into a low-calorie food. Whole grains help protect against type 2 diabetes, and researchers at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center found study participants whose diets included plenty of whole grains and fruit cut their heart disease risk by almost half compared to those whose diets favored meat and fatty foods.
· Red wine: A glass a day for women and no more than two glasses daily for men can be beneficial. Moderate consumption of red wine has been shown to slow age-related declines in cardiovascular function, according to the American Heart Association.
· Fiber: Increase your fiber intake for a longer life. Research from The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition finds that the more fiber you include in your diet, the lower your risk of coronary heart disease. The daily recommendation is 25 to 35 grams.
While there may be no such thing as the fountain of youth, a healthy diet can help men and women prolong their lives.
Berries and whole grains are nutritious foods that can help men and women live longer, healthier lives.

On February 16, a snowstorm made roads icy and difficult to travel. On my way back home from a doctor’s appointment, I was unable to stop my car at the railroad crossing and slid into a snowdrift. My car was very close to the crossing gate. When the gates came down, they hit my car and went back up. I could not move the car forward or back. The Corfu Police responded when I called 911. Friends and neighbors on Snipery Road came to help. Within an hour, my car was pushed out of the snow and I was safe at home.
Thank you to everyone who came to help, especially my neighbor Adam who was the first to come to my aid and my daughter Rachel who tried her best to shovel me out.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On March 14, 1922, John “Jack” Mack, co-founder of one of
North America’s largest heavy-duty truck makers, is killed when
his car collides with a trolley in Pennsylvania. The expression “it

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Is Prostate to Blame for Sluggish Bladder? DEAR DR. ROACH: I would like your opinion on enlarged prostate. My primary-care doctor sent me for a blood test and said my PSA number was too high, then sent me to a urologist. He said my bladder is not emptying and that I am having urine retention in the bladder. After one week of medication (Rapaflo), I had a catheter inserted for another week. He measured the urine in the bladder, and it was 880 ml. Now he is suggesting surgery. Is he going too fast? What are your thoughts on the procedure and side effects? Will this correct the problem? -- D.G.
ANSWER: The bladder is drained via a tube called the urethra, and in men, the urethra runs right through the middle of the prostate. As men get older, the prostate commonly enlarges, and this can cause resistance to flow. The symptoms can range from mildly annoying to complete obstruction. Complete obstruction is an emergency, since the kidneys will fail within a few days of being unable to drain urine at all.
But the obstruction does not need to be complete in order to cause kidney damage. It’s the high pressure in the urethra, bladder and ureters (the tubes that allow urine to flow from the kidneys to the bladder) that causes kidney damage. Placing a catheter allows the urine to drain at low pressure if the problem is in the urethra.
Normal bladder capacity is between 300-400 ml. At 880 ml, you would experience very abnormal bladder drainage and would be at high risk for ongoing kidney damage. Thus, I completely agree with your urologist that something, probably surgical, needs to be done quickly.
It’s not completely clear to me whether your inability to drain the bladder is due to obstruction from enlarged prostate, even though an elevated PSA suggests that this might be the case. It also is possible that there is something wrong with the nerves that go to or from the bladder. I suspect your urologist has done additional bladder tests to help sort this out.
The booklet on the prostate gland discusses enlargement as well as cancer. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 1001W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.
*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have weaned off Zoloft, and I noticed a swelling of my fingers -- I can’t get my rings on. Do you think it is related? -- E.P.
ANSWER: Discontinuing an antidepressant such as sertraline (Zoloft) certainly can cause symptoms. Dizziness, fatigue, muscle aches, anxiety and irritability are common. It happens more frequently if the drug is suddenly stopped versus tapered down over weeks. Paroxitine (Paxil) seems to have the highest incidence of symptoms on stopping.
However, I haven’t seen swelling as a result of stopping sertraline. It may be related, but I doubt it. Is it possible that you are consuming more salt? That’s the most common reason for increased fluid in the fingers over a short time.
I would see your doctor if it doesn’t go away in a week or so.
*** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to [email protected].

2-17 was Random Act of

know. Thank you, Mr. Phone
Serviceman for helping me
get to the end of my

came to fix a phone in
house. Then came out,
picked up a shovel and
helped me get to the road in
the last 1/3 of driveway. We
talked and shoveled
together. You made my day
proving that chivalry is NOT

than you will know.
As of late, paramedics and
volunteers / the ambulance,
have been called to our

back surgery. Every one of
these individuals are
WONDERFUL and special
people who go out of their
way to respond to the needs
of others. My family and I
are truly appreciative of
them, and can’t thank them
enough. Andrew, Kyle, John,

Yes, the ambulance is
there for medical
purposes and not personal

ambulance to be taken on a
“food run” is because if they

they will immediately have
access to the ambulance. If
their “own transportation” is
used, this will delay the
emergency more. That being

the right to eat a lunch or

These volunteers you are

I find it funny that on the

wonderful people are in

people like that in my

snowed in. No emergency

needed help. So where
were these fine, good
Samaritans????
Please, if you see a tow
truck, police car, fire

Enjoy dining out w ith kids
Practice : Daniel Post Senning, the great-grandson of etiquette expert Emily Post and co-author of “ Emily Post’s Etiquette, 18th edition,” says parents can practice dining out by replicating the experience (as much as possible) at home. Ask the children to use inside voices and exhibit proper behavior at the dinner table. Remove children from the table if they misbehave and try again another time.
Parents also can acc limate their youngsters to dining out by gradually w orking their w ay up to more formal restaurants. Start by dining out at a place w here table behavior or noise may be more tolerable, such as a fast-food restaurant, before moving on to a casual restaurant and then a nicer restaurant w hen kids can handle it.

Cat Care Tips for First Time Owners Discourage biting. Similar to a first time parent telling their child no, first time cat owners might find it difficult to discourage certain behaviors their kitten exhibits. One common problem owners come across is biting. First-time owners might find it harmless if their kitten bites their hands. After all, such biting doesn’t hurt. However, allowing kittens to bite often results in a cat who bites often. Should a kitten begin to bite, strongly discourage such behavior to avoid the problem becoming much more serious in the years ahead.

Job Hunting Tips For M en And Women Over 50
Don’t limit yourself. Those w ho w ere vic timized by layoffs should expand their job searches to more than just their previous fields. W hile it’s definitely a good idea to maintain contacts in your old field and routinely look for openings in that field, it’s also a good idea to examine your skill set and experience and find a new field w here these things apply. Chances are your years of experience are transferable to many fields, and redirec ting your job hunting efforts to a new line of w ork might yield opportunities you are not even aw are existed.
Eco- F riendly Ways To Alter Your Professional Life
Forget you have a printer. Now adays, few er and few er people rely on printed documents to get through the w orkday. Advances w ith regard to computer technology has made it just as easy to read documents on a computer screen as it is to do so on a sheet of paper. If you’re among the last to embrace this grow ing trend, think of the environment before you print your next document and opt to read documents on your desktop rather than printing them out. Instead of leaving notes for cow orkers, send them e-mails instead. This saves paper, w hich in turn w ill save your company money, and it also reduces your reliance on ink that can potentially harm the environment.
W hen making presentations, do so using slides rather than printing materials and handing them out in a packet. E-mail cow orkers the presentation in advance and print out a single copy for the meeting rather than printing multiple copies.
If you and your cow orkers simply must print documents, try to use tw o- sided printing and copying to reduce your paper usage. And urge your office manager to order supplies made from recyc led materials and discard of any potentially harmful products, inc luding ink cartridges, in an eco-friendly w ay.
