Welcome. Thanks for attending this production of

“Godspell, Jr.” Many of the young actors you are here to support have been involved in ACT through its Young People’s Theatre (YPT) education program for years, some have been in other mainstage ACT

productions in the past few years, still others are new to ACT/YPT and we thank them all for their participation. In 1998 I directed “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,” the first YPT production performed as a part of an ACT main stage season. “Pirates of Penzance, Jr” was on the main stage in 2012, directed by Brian Schultz, and I’m pleased he is directing “Godspell, Jr.” I want to thank Brian for his 14 years of dedicated service as ACT’s education director, enhancing the theater training of the young people in the area. It is important to support ACT’s youth education program. Some may only experience live theatre onstage or backstage once or twice, but many will continue their life-long learning of theater through high school, college and at community theaters all over the country. Some may choose theater as a profession. Getting started young is the key. I’m proud of ACT’s YPT program, which Brian has spent so much time building. I’m sure you will enjoy the efforts of the young people

in this production of “Godspell, Jr.” Thanks again for “playing a part” in the lives of these young people performing today with your attendance, but please support ACT’s Young People’s Theatre with a contribution. (See the back page of this program for details.) Coming up, ACT presents “That’ll Be The Day,” featuring the music of Roy Orbison: “Pretty Woman,”

“Crying,” “Only the Lonely” and “You Got it”; Linda Ronstadt: “That’ll Be the Day,” “Blue Bayou” and When Will I Be Loved”; and Gene Pitney: “Liberty Valence” and

“Only Love Can Break a Heart.” ACT’s box office, located at Riddle’s Jewelry in the Aberdeen Mall, is currently open for ACT subscribers and opens to the public on Monday. “That’ll Be The Day,” features the talents of Colleen Raye, Wayne Luchau and Debbie O’Keefe and runs Wednesday – Saturday, March 9-12 at 7:30 pm, with a matinee on Saturday at 2:30 pm. About a month later will be “Pride and Prejudice,” on April 6-10, here at the Capitol Theatre. This NSU theatre department production will be a part of ACT’s 2016 season as the Johnson Fine Arts Center continues its renovation and rejuvenation. The box office opens at Riddle’s Jewelry on March 15th for subscribers and March 21st for the public. Thanks for your support and please join us for all our 2016 productions.

FROM THE ARTISTIC/MANAGING DIRECTOR

JANE WEST (REDMOND) was a lover of all visual and performing arts. Her involvement in the nurture of these was evident in the early efforts to procure the Capitol Theatre building for the Aberdeen Community Theatre. The Jane West Gallery is dedicated to her memory.

Welcome to “Godspell, Jr.! If you’re unfamiliar with the show, it’s the Gospel of Matthew set to music. It first opened off-Broadway in May 1971, five months before “Jesus Christ Superstar.” Whereas “Superstar” was originally written as a rock

opera and focused primarily on the events surrounding the Passion, “Godspell” focuses more on the parables, featuring more gentle and eclectic musical selections. I first saw “Godspell” performed by the Sioux Falls Community Playhouse as a high school kid in the early 1990s. I remember not being too keen on going, as I was not enamored with the idea of going to see a “churchy” play. But I was completely blown away: the music, the acting, the fun – the sheer joy of that production is still vivid in my memory. “Godspell” remains, to this day, my favorite piece of theater – ever! I have waited a long, long time to be able to do this show. So what a joy it is to do my favorite show with my favorite people: our own Aberdeen area youth. And what a privilege it is to be able to share their talents with you as part of your 2016 season subscription. I can’t tell you just how pleased I am that since “Pirates of Penzance, Jr.” and “Second Samuel” in 2012, “The Top Job!” in 2013, “White Christmas” in 2014 and “Christmas Story” last year, our young people are appearing more and more in mainstage productions. It is so very important to support their time, talent and hard work – they are the future of your community theater.

Much of the technical work for this production was completed by YPTers as well. They painted the set, pulled their own props, assembled their own costumes, are running lights and all the behind-the-scenes functions by themselves. I had just as many young people asking to be part of the crew as I did audition for onstage roles. One young lady told her mother after auditions that she didn’t care if she got cast or not – she wanted to come down and help. My own daughter, Erica, has been begging to serve as assistant director/stage manager since the last YPT show in October. An historically difficult role – stage managers are the first to arrive and the last to leave; oftentimes bearing the brunt of actors’ and director’s ire for anything that might happen. They are ultimately responsible for running the show during performances. While at some theaters the stage manager is considered the booby prize, we have kids on a waiting list here to serve in that capacity. So John, if you’re reading this, you’re up next! This is all thanks to your support of Young People’s Theatre over the years. Thank you for helping provide a place for our area youth to find their talents, to grow as individuals and to work toward something awesome. Theater is something we can enjoy and participate in all our lives, and it starts right here at ACT. Please continue supporting the future of your community theater through your contributions and your attendance. Hopefully the efforts of more than 30 local youngsters will have the same effect on you that the long-ago production of “Godspell” had on me almost 25 years ago. Thanks for coming.
