    The Dairy cow trade was the highlight of the week with the very best at £2,200 on behalf of

    Messrs Fishleigh of Broadwoodkelly with a third of the entry exceeding the £2,000 bracket!

    A few less on offer this week. The trade nationally

    has eased back to around 200p per kilo, our overall

    average on the morning was 203p and more lambs

    could have been sold. The young tight skinned sappy

    lambs saw many pens over 211p to a top of 215p for

    a pen of 46kg £99 for Rod Evely of Woolaton, Peters

    Marland. 14 pens over £98 to a top of the morning

    of £103 from Shaun Ellis of North Petherwin.

    424 DRAFT EWES & RAMS

    More ewes on offer with 7 buyers in attendance met a flying trade up around £7 to £9 a head with the big

    ewes up to £115 from Derek Broad of Homeleigh, Launceston. Mules to £72 and rams to £98.

  • Another massive day in the calf pens saw the trade climb

    even further with an overall top call today set at £605 for the best of the entry of 102 stirks.

    The best stirks came in from R&L Ashton of Shebbear which

    reached £605 for a Charolais with best 4 month old Limousins

    at £550 for the Pomeroy family of Bradworthy whilst a

    cracking run of 50 3-6 month Hereford stirks in from Brian

    Thomas of South Molton topping at £520.

    In the baby calf section a ‘monster of a trade’ for the 1st quality

    calves with new buyers joining the ranks pushing the best to

    £460 for the best of the Blue bulls from Messrs Schuttkacker

    & Sons of Bere Alston near Tavistock. John & Mark Elliott of

    Bradford saw their best Blues at £430 & £405 with baby Blues

    from Becky Mills of Petersmarland at £390. Messrs Care of St

    Austell sold a 34 day olf Blue to top their consignment at £358

    with John Cann of Highampton at £335 with a big bunch of

    Limousin baby calves from Andy & Will Hutton of Rutleigh Ball

    at £332. Ann Jose & family saw their 30 day old Blue at £330

    with numerous vendors over £310 to include Messrs Willsbro

    of Wadebridge, Cornwall who sold 23 topping at £315. Heifers

    saw a really exciting trade with Becky Mills taking the top 3

    slots at £372, £355 & £340 with John Elliott at £340 and £338

    (x2). No less than 31 heifers up and over the £300 bracket with plenty of buyers ready to spend.

    Holstein bull calves were even better today with the very best at £162 with Les Tape of Hartland at £148 and

    Andrew Gilbert & family of Sheepwash selling 4 at £117. Very young (30 days and less) topped at £82 for

    Messrs Drew with the best from Steve & Kat Pomeroy of West Putford at £76 for the best of their

    consignment. Denny Hooper & family of Inwardleigh saw their team of 7 sell well at £73 with there being plenty

    of ‘rearing men’ present and ready to buy Holsteins to rear which look the cheaper option than continentals

    at this time.

    On Monday we held our weekly collection of TB restricted calves which saw animals from 3 farms top at £84

  • A grand entry of good quality cattle today saw another lift in the trade particularly for stronger types.

    137 young cattle saw increased demand for all classes with young Blues and Limousins in particular demand.

  • Cows to £2200 & Heifers to £2100

    A small but good quality entry met a flying

    trade with over 25% of the freshly calved cows and heifers selling at over £2000.

    The sale was topped by a very smart Red and White 2nd calver, ‘Hawkleigh Aikman Saphire 2 GP81’, who sold at

    £2200 on behalf of Messrs. P F & M W Fishleigh of Broadwoodkelly. This cow calved early April and has been

    served and was sold giving 42 Kgs. Messrs. S R Gilbert & Son from Sheepwash had another outstanding entry

    of fresh calvers in the market and opened the sale with the first lot in the ring realising £2100 for a 2nd Calver,

    ‘Bocaddon Jitterbug SS Cornelia’. The same vendors sold another 2nd calver ‘Bocaddon Commend BJ Polamie’, a

    naturally polled cow yielding 48 Kgs which sold at £2000.

    An excellent consignment from Phil and Richard Reed from Milton Damerel, met huge demand with the

    consignment topping at £2100 for a freshly calved heifer ‘Gidcott Gerold Christine’. Others from the same

    consignment realised £2050 for a 2nd calver ‘Gidcott Altaarmani Panache’ and another heifer ‘Gidcott Altabarney

    Rebecca 3’ selling at £2000. Phil and Richard Reed from Milton Damerel saw their consignment of 5 cows and

    heifers average a very impressive £1950 and the Gilbert family from Sheepwash consignement of 10 cows and

    heifers averaged £1810.

    In calf heifers saw a very strong trade topping at £1450 on behalf of Philip Hicks of St. Anns Chapel with others

    at £1400 and £1380. James Trounson from Mullion also saw a superb trade on is in calf heifers topping at

    £1380 with others at £1350 and £1320. Mature bulling heifers from Mr. A. A. Wilkins of St. Austell levelled at

    £700.

    More fresh calvers are required to meet the strong demand.
