My rule of thumb for the Wednesday Packet note is to address important events, programs and ideas pertinent to our campus life. Occasionally I use this space for personal musings. I hope you don’t mind. Joe and I are preparing to return to the small Illinois town where I spent my four years of high school for my….wait for it….fiftieth (50) high school reunion. First the number is ginormous…much too large to be really true. Second, what could all these old folks find to talk about after all these years? The truth is, we can’t wait! Joe did not attend high school with me. He is from New Jersey, but he loves to come with me to visit my old haunts (all three of them), and spend time with my old (the word has a whole new meaning now) friends. I was raised in the Air Force and did not spend more than a few years in one place. I was lucky that I had all four years in the same high school. My school was located in a small farming town north of Champaign/Urbana and the military base was at least twice the size of the town. I had less than 250 graduates in my class and we were a motley crew. One reality of high school is that the experience seems to be eternally difficult. Books, poems, movies and personal stories are consumed with the angst of the high school experience. Of course there are a few teens who come out on the other side with few scars, but I am not sure I trust their memories or self-awareness….adolescence is treacherous and has been for generations! Everything is a big deal. Everyone is watching you. Life is uncertain. Good times are the best and bad times are deadly. Emotions rule. Parents cannot possibly understand. The list goes on and on. What I love about these reunions is that you see the “rest of the story”. As you can imagine, my classmates scattered all over the world. They are now well situated in their families and careers. The comparison of where they were when they were sixteen and where they are now is a study in contradictions. The class princess, winner of all coveted titles, stayed in the small town, married a store clerk, raised her family with little fanfare. Her current appearance gives little clue to the place she held in the fantasies of students and staff. The class clown is a well-established bestselling author in the field of economics (no less!). The football captain is an artist who lives in Paris and is married to a German national. The shy awkward young man who took me to the junior prom is now an extremely attractive nuclear scientist who mesmerizes our reunions when he and his model wife take over the dance floor with grace and elegance. The brilliant but unruly track star, who was the bane of every teacher who ever taught him, retired as the principal of a school for behavior disordered boys and is now an actor in Los Angeles. My best friend, Carol, is a North Dakota rancher who hosts regional rodeos and weathers winters that keep her literally captive in her home for weeks at a time. We love our time together every five or ten years. Although we are sitting across from balding, sagging, weathered bodies, our mind’s eye can only see the bright and hopeful teenagers who shared the crucible of high school. Regardless of the paths our lives have taken, we know each other very, very well. We know the victories and vulnerabilities that shaped our futures. This reality is played out in high schools all over the country. I know that the experiences here shape the future of our teens. I know that the friendships made here, every year, last into the future. I know that our TCS students will find the passions, challenges, and victories of their high school years to be significant contributors to the men and women they are in the process of becoming. I just feel honored to be a fly on their adolescent wall!

PAC Picks this week
Indirect Giving - Quick and Easy
An easy way to support TCS is through its partnerships with various companies you use every week such as Publix, Target, and Amazon. Stay tuned for other opportunities with BoxTops and Kroger in future Wednesday Packets. These dollars support various program enhancements around TCS. Watch for more information on how these dollars have been used in the past year.
If you don’t already have one, get your Publix key-chain sized card in the Central Administration or Middle School offices. Pick up enough to give to friends and family! Each time you shop, present your card at the checkout counter and Publix will donate a percentage of your purchase to TCS.
Target enables customers to specify The Cottage School as the recipient of a percentage of sales charged to their Target credit card. If you don’t currently have one, inquire the next time you shop at Target. It is simple and easy to sign-up for.
Every time you shop Amazon.com, make sure you access through TCS’ site. There is a link on the bottom right side of the home page. This will credit a percentage of your purchase to The Cottage School. It’s simple, so you can start shopping!
The best way to avoid
getting the flu is to get a
flu shot every year.
On September 29 from 7:30am – 12:45pm, CVS will be in the gym
offering flu shots to staff, students and TCS families. For those on
the UMR medical plan, it is covered at 100% (FREE). They will also
accept insurance from other carriers as well.
