What fun we are having! The Ice Bucket Challenge for ALS was a huge success and quite refreshing! Hope you had a chance to see the pictures we posted. Our sports teams are in full swing and we appreciate all the parent involvement! Our concession stand will be up and running soon and we are glad to see the volunteers signing up for that assistance. Our second New Parent event was an evening reception last week that was well attended and fun! Look for upcoming socials for all parents to get to know each other and interact with staff. Thanks to Tangela, Rosetta and your PAC leadership for these wonderful opportunities! By now teachers have begun to increase the homework amount and complexity of the assignments. For our new students (and all ninth graders) there may be a bit of a culture shock. Words such as “strict” and “hard” may be cropping up in daily conversations. Please do not panic. That is a sign that they are beginning to stretch. It is likely that increasing expectations will increase stress. If the process stopped there, we would be in trouble. However, we use that step to walk our students through the resolution stage. First they express their discomfort. Then we discuss the specific problems they are having and offer potential solution steps. As they begin to tackle their problems on their own, with support and encouragement from their teachers, they learn that “hard” does not mean “failure”. And when the task is successfully completed, they feel proud and capable. There is value in this process on several levels. First, they learn that they, themselves, can accomplish difficult tasks. Their confidence grows with each conquered challenge. Secondly, they begin to create their own problem solving methods which they will use as they move through school and careers. Thirdly, they learn to communicate when life gets tough instead of avoiding a challenge or asking to be rescued. For many of you newer parents, this may be a new concept. You may be accustomed to a school setting that expects you to take on the teaching role and that work presented to the teacher should be in perfect form. But that is not how students learn independence and accountability. We believe that school is a place to learn skills, as well as content. This is what we do, day in and day out. The sooner our students allow us to assist them, the sooner they learn to assist themselves. The more you communicate that message to them, and the concerns to us, the more independent your teen will become. This is not an easy approach, as it involves some initial discomfort on the part of our teens and a more intentional communication pattern on the part of all involved, but it does work! Some tasks are more difficult than others but our unified message to our students is “You can do this. We can help.” From there our students become more confident and less anxious about facing new opportunities. And that is the goal, right?
