I have known quite a few persons throughout my ministry who have told me they do not like the season of Lent. They do not like the “ugliness” of the season or the negative thoughts engendered when considering the brutal torture and death of Jesus on our behalf. They would rather make the safer and more pleasant jump to the brightness of Easter morn and its beau-ty and joy than dwell in the darkness and gloom. Truth is, if we want to get to the joy of Easter and the shout of “Alleluia!” we need to experience the difficult stuff that makes us uncomfortable. I would suggest to you the beauty, joy, and power of new life we experience on Easter is made far more intense, meaning-ful, and satisfying when we willingly enter the season of Lent with an open willing-ness to embrace all the season is waiting to give us if we want it or not. When we have the spiritual courage to live into the un-nerving aspects and reflect upon the cruci-fied Christ with his arms out stretched and bleeding, and all the discomfort and sad-ness with which that truth comes, instead of skipping to the resurrected Christ with arms outstretched to welcome us into his warm embrace, we open ourselves fully to receive with gratefulness the gift of

transfiguration, turning away from that which binds and blinds us, the realization of which has the extraordinary power to change us in indelible ways by removing the fetters of doubt and pain and blesses us with the freedom and invitation to grow in a deeper relationship with the One who gave everything for us, so we might have a new life with him. I strongly encourage each of us to take our Lenten journey, whatever it may look like, seriously, and to take advantage of every opportunity God provides for us to grow closer to the God who created us and the God who invites us into this season of promises transformation, if we are willing to trust His love and support throughout this most meaningful season of the church year. Take heart, my sisters and brothers in Christ, as you welcome and embrace the struggle and the discomfort. I can promise you that if you hold yourself back from jumping forward to Easter and accept the gift of Lent, you will be rewarded in ways you could not have imagined. Your partner on the journey,

Pastor Mark

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Marg and I deeply appreciate the many prayers, kind words and cards that we received during and following my recently surgery. They were a constant reminder that we do not travel through the rough spots of life alone. Your kind-ness and sincere gestures of concern strengthened us and will be with us always. I would also like to thank Donna for the many times that she visited us in the hospital and followed up with concerns and prayers. Yours in Christ, Ron and Marg Price Thank you for all the prayers and cards we received. A spe-cial thanks to Donna & Pastor Mark for the visit to the hos-pital. Scott is in a better place. The Shelly, Hammaker, Fife, and Fickes families. Vicki and I would like to thanks the members and friends of Holy Trinity for their prayers and cards, following Vicki’s hip fracture on December 13. Her doctor has given her the all clear to resume normal activities! Thank you, Newell and Vicki Embley Dear friends in Christ, We are so very thankful for your recent generous gift of $1,087 to support the ministries of Love In the Name of Christ. Because of you, churches in Lancaster County re-sponded to over 8,000 calls and emails in 2019, and met over 5,000 needs of their neighbors with love and compas-sion, reflecting the light of Christ to everyone they served. Without your prayers and financial support, we would be unable to connect the growing number of folks in need in our community with the Body of Christ. We are privileged to serve you, and others, because of your gifts of love. May God’s blessing be with you. Yours in Christ, John A. (Jay) Rairigh, Executive Director

Why Church Camp? Summer is quickly approaching and it’s time to consider summer camp. Did you know that adults who at-tended church camp as a youth are more than 3 times as likely to remain affiliated with a religious commu-nity than those who never attended camp? Lutheran Camping Corporation offers the very best in outdoor ministry programs at Kirchenwald and Nawakwa. Campers practice living a faithful life in a non-threatening environment. Campers have opportunities for quiet, individual devotion as well as dynamic, participatory worship. Campers learn leadership skills and gain self-confidence. Campers learn how to be disciples, eager to proclaim the Gospel and serve others and they bring that enthu-siasm back to their home congregations. All this while having a fun time in the great outdoors. This is faith in formation… and it takes place within the setting of an outdoor community that seeks to build character, foster independence, encourage good relationships, and teach life skills… benefits that campers will carry with them for the rest of their

lives. Camp brochures are now available for 2020 and can be found on the table in the back of the narthex. Over $135 of discounts are available and are outlined in sheets included in the brochures. Full payment discount camp registration must be received at camp by April 4, 2020. Register on-line or send payment directly to the camp, minus your Holy Trinity de-duction. Camp will bill the church for our share of cost. Check it out: https://www.lutherancamping.org/ Holy Trinity is committed to finding funds for EVERY child who wants to attend church camp. Lack of funds should NOT be the reason for a child not attending camp. Resources are available so please talk to Pastor Mark, Donna Nace or call the church office. And camping isn’t just for kids! In addition to camping opportunities for kids K-11, there are opportunities for adults and the entire family! BYOC Bring Your Own Craft Camp, Family Camp, and Elder Camp are offered for campers of all ages. Craft Camp provides an opportunity to join a community of fellow crafters to focus on fellowship, worship, and your crea-tive passion. Family Camp provides the same fun activities as regular camping, but also offers the opportunity to grow closer together and closer to God through intergenerational activities. Accommodations are in either rustic cabins or in the com-fortable lodges, depending on your preference. Eder Camp is for adults 55+ with accommodations in a lodge. Again, many of the same activities as all campers, but coffee and no set Lights Out time. More information in the brochures or on-line. Contact Lisa Garrett if you have any questions: [email protected] or 717-490-1927.

Lenten Appeal 2020 Trinity’s Lenten Appeal this year will be helping people in need right here in the United States. We will be col-lecting funds for two ELCA’s programs. First to support Soup Kitchens across the country, some of which are orga-nized by ELCA congregations. Meals at soup kitchens can feed 10 people for $20 or 50 people for $100. Second to support the Stock a Backpack With Food programs. One backpack can be stocked for $10. This is like the Power Pack program we currently support here in Ephrata with food for children, on meal assistance in school, on weekends at home. This appeal will begin on Sunday March 1st and run through Sunday April 26th. There are special envelopes in the pew envelope holders to assist everyone in supporting this special appeal. It is not necessary to specify which of the programs to support. When the appeal is completed the Stewardship Committee will divide the money collected appropriately between these two programs, and it will be sent to ELCA for distribution. Thanks in advance for your support of this program. This is another opportunity for us to be looking beyond our doors and doing God’s work for all people. Stewardship Committee

Ephrata Area Social Services

Neighbors Helping Neighbors: Started in 1971 by a group of local churches, Ephrata Area Social Services was formed with a commitment to the ideal of "Neighbors Helping Neighbors." The Planning Committee, in Octo-ber of 1970 challenged the community with a dream to become a "community of the con-cerned." To recognize that "in the midst of a flourishing economy, there are those in need who are all but forgotten to their community." It is with those inspirations that EASS has grown to be a diverse provider of services capable of meeting an ever increasing demand from neigh-bors in need. EASS is a non-profit organization serving the Ephrata and Cocalico Regions of Northern Lan-caster County. The criterion for eligibility is the expression of a legitimate need for help. EASS receives its support from the community. Dona-tions come from churches, civic organizations, private individuals, businesses and local founda-tions. EASS receives no public funds... Ephrata Area Social Services, a tradition of reliability, providing services to those in need living in the Ephrata and Cocalico region. Mission Statement The mission of Ephrata Area Social Services is to effectively channel community resources into a network of support for neighbors in need of human resources.

IN THE COMMUNITY: COMMUNITY MEAL

UP-DATE The community meal program in Ephrata, continues to be an important part of the ministry here at Holy Trinity. There are a number of people who help with food preparation, food and monetary donation, and also coming out to help serve. The more people that help, the more successful the program is. The help that we get

is greatly appreciated. The meal program in Ephrata continues to grow. A weekly Thursday evening meal is served at one of three Ephrata Churches. Watch the weekly bulletin for opportunities to contribute food or to help with meals. If you have any questions, please call Sue Watts at 738-2327
