On the final leg of his journey from Southampton to Wolverhampton, Michael Portillo’s first destination is the elegant spa town of Cheltenham, where he discovers a very early locomotive carriage which ran not on rails but on the road and is lucky enough to get behind the wheel. His next stop is the medieval town of Tewkesbury, scene of a grisly battle during the Wars of the Roses. Armour-plated and sword at the ready, Michael joins a group of re-enactors for a taste of the action. Mercifully unscathed, he makes tracks for Droitwich to find out about how a lowly boatman became the King of Salt and lived in a beautiful chateau, an unexpected sight in the Midlands countryside. Michael’s journey ends in Wolverhampton, where he hears Queen Victoria made an emotional visit, which signalled the end of her exile from public life after mourning her husband, Prince Albert. He learns how the townspeople showed off their talents to the Queen, among them the lost art of Japanning, a speciality of Wolverhampton.

For over 5000 years the basic design of the tandoor oven has not changed, making it one of the oldest cooking devices on earth. Maeve O’Meara seeks out delicious recipes from across the subcontinent to Armenia - tandoori chicken, prawns, naan, lamb kebabs and an elaborate roast pumpkin and discovers tandoor ovens are made in Australia by a potter on NSW’s south coast.



Maeve explores Argentinian a la cruz style cooking, Brazilian churrasco, Sardinian suckling pig, Portuguese piri piri chicken and a crowd-pleasing Greek Easter lamb. Maeve joins chef Nicolas Arriola, who demonstrates the dramatic asado a la cruz with a whole lamb butterflied and fixed to a cross-like structure over the fire.Then it's a feast of a Brazilian Churrasco with Brazilian expat and restaurateur, Patricia Nunes, who demonstrates how to make a delicious salt-encrusted picanha.

The story of Chuck Wepner, an underdog boxer who went the distance against Muhammad Ali and inspired the creation of Rocky. Chuck Wepner was a liquor salesman from Bayonne, New Jersey who drove a Cadillac with 'Champ' vanity plates. A former New Jersey State Heavyweight Boxing Champion, he entered the ring with Sonny Liston, got his nose broken by Muhammad Ali, and inspired Sylvester Stallone to write 'Rocky' - which won three Academy Awards. Wepner was left out of the 'Rocky' glory, and his career took strange turns as he worked to stay in the spotlight. He went on to fight Andre the Giant as 'The Assassin' and boxed a 900 pound bear - twice.

Ilford To Rochester 05 18

Steered by his Bradshaw’s, Michael Portillo heads along the Essex bank of the Thames before crossing the river into the Garden of England, Kent. He begins today’s leg at Barkingside, where a Victorian philanthropist called Dr Thomas Barnardo made it his life’s work to transform the lives of destitute children. From Upminster Michael takes the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway to Tilbury and finds out how the line and the old station transformed the town into one of the country’s most important ports. At the docks, Michael tries his hand at loading a container on to a pocket wagon. Over the river at Gravesend Michael discovers how one of Queen Victoria’s favourite army officers, General Gordon, left his mark on the town. Michael’s last destination on today’s leg is Rochester, where he encounters a host of familiar characters and explores the city which was home to one of the Victorian era’s greatest writers, Charles Dickens.

Maeve O'Meara explores the ancient art of smoking in cuisines around the world, tasting hot smoked salmon and kingfish, West African condiments, flavoursome smoked lamb, Irish cold smoked bacon, and Kansas City style ribs. In search of the flavour and texture that smoking provides, Maeve heads to the far NSW south coast where master smoker Stan Soroka shares a recipe for a delicious and surprisingly easy hot-smoked kingfish. Then Nigerian born provedore, Kunle Adesua, uses techniques from home to smoke Australian fish with long-burning red gum in his Melbourne smokehouse.



In the series finale, Maeve embraces the ingenuity of the home-made barbecue, exploring the remarkably adaptable 44 gallon drum used in the Kimberley as a smoker for barramundi and in Jamaica to cook jerk chicken and pork, as well as various parts of fridges, wheelie bins and lawnmowers welded into cooking devices. Michael’s next stop is the impressive castle at Arundel and he’s pleased to find that the Duke of Norfolk was a great supporter of the railways. Maeve explores the world of herbs and spices, the plant kingdom's biggest gift to mankind. She spends time in Andrew McConnell's treasured herb garden. He creates roast beetroot salad with pickled rhubarb and nasturtium vinegar. Maeve visits a carefully tended Lebanese home garden where wild thyme known as za'atar is grown, dried and used to make spice mix that is spread on home baked flat bread. Persian chef Sanam Janghorban creates a spectacular flavoursome fresh herb omelette to celebrate the Nowruz, or Persian New Year. Bangladeshi-born chef Tapos Singha showcases the whole spice blend known as Panch Phoron in a Bengali Vegetarian dish called Shukto made with the subcontinent's favourite vegetables. Maeve is finally rewarded with a luscious Sri Lankan Love Cake, fragrant with spices baked by Debbie Solomon.



Maeve explores the marvellous abundance of summer vegetables and fruits in dishes from around the world. Tomato Day is the most special day in the Italian food calendar, and Maeve joins three generations of the Baggio Family in suburban Melbourne as they preserve the goodness of summer with a home-made passata. Maeve explores the versatility of the multi-talented eggplant with iconic chef Tetsuya Wakuda invites us into his art-filled test kitchen to see how his ode to eggplant is created using simple techniques and a range of his favourite ingredients to create braised eggplant with saltbush.



Maeve celebrates the culinary power of flowers across a delicious range of traditional dishes from around the world. She visits pioneering saffron growers in Tasmania, and joins the harvest of the little mauve crocus flower and the careful drying and preserving of saffron. Italian-born chef Alessandro Pavoni, a master of saffron risotto, shares his secrets. In Darwin she meets Top End food legend, Jimmy Shu, who magically unlocks the rich blue hues of the tropical butterfly pea flower for a Nonya dumpling.
