First Work Updates

SSM Monitoring

First Work has been working to establish a monitoring system tokeep our members abreast of the SSM transition. Our goal is toidentify the successes, challenges and gaps in thetransformation landscape to keep our members informed of theprogress and to identify advocacy and policy solutions for thefollowing phases of transformation.

Over the coming weeks, First Work will be releasing our firstwave of monitoring reporting from the SSMs. All of thisinformation will be available via our members-only portal.

Today, we are releasing the summary report of the Overview ofthe Transition Plan and Roll Out of Service Delivery Modelin Catchment Areas and the summary SSM QAs from theirparticipation in Futures’20. You can find these materials in ourmembers-only portal.

First Work is also currently establishing an SSM MonitoringCommittee.

The purpose of this group is to have ESPs in the catchmentareas meet to discuss their ongoing experiences. First WorkMembers in 3 catchment areas will come together to discusstheir various successes, challenges, and gaps in the prototyperegions. Through these meetings and discussions, First Workwill provide a summary report that will also be shared as aresource for members in the organization.

Communities of Practice – Recruitment Launching January 18th

First Work is thrilled to be launching recruitment for our upcomingCommunities of Practice!

Communities of Practice (CoPs) are groups of practitioners whoconvene regularly to identify common problems in their work andcollaborate to create and trial new solutions. First Work’sCommunities of Practice for Employment Service Providers are forproviders with varied experience in Second Career, Canada-OntarioJob Grant or Youth Job Connection or similar programs.

First Work’s CoPs for ESPs are designed to harvest knowledge frompractitioners with on-the-ground experience to create and test solutionsto increase our positive impact on Ontario’s employment landscape.

RBC Career Launch Program - 5PM Application Deadline!

RBC Career Launch is back and First Work is now acceptingapplicants!

First Work is partnering with RBC again this year for an exclusivepartnership to engage youth who are not in employment, education, ortraining (NEET). This partnership with First Work gives those withadditional education barriers an opportunity to participate in this one-year paid internship program.

Candidates are required to be first screened by our memberorganizations ensuring youth meet all the eligibility criteria listed belowand submit an application to First Work by January 15th at 5:00pm.First Work will then conduct the final screening before sendingcandidates forward to RBC for their application deadline of January18th.

Please see attached for full program details and eligibility criteria.

Please note, this partnership between RBC Career Launch and FirstWork is unique, and therefore the strict eligibility criteria differ from thepublic recruitment for RBC Career Launch Program. If you havecandidates who do not meet the eligibility requirement above, you mayredirect those youth to apply directly for RBC Career Launch Programthrough their public channels.

Ontario Update

Expanding Eligibility for Emergency Child Care in SouthernOntario

The Ontario government will be expanding eligibility for the targetedemergency childcare program to more frontline workers in order to helpthe parents of school-aged children who may not be able to supporttheir child's learning/care at home because they are required to reportto work in person.

Ontario Declares Second Provincial Emergency to AddressCOVID-19 Crisis

The Ontario government declared a second provincial emergency onTuesday in consultation with the Chief Medical Officer of Health. As of Thursday, the government has issued a stay-at-home order. Thisrequires everyone to remain at home, limiting people’s mobility, toreduce the number of daily contacts with those outside an immediatehousehold. There are exceptions for permitted purposes, however theregulations released have not provided much clarity in the way of whatis deemed essential. Allotments to leave home include: going to thegrocery store or pharmacy, accessing health care services, for exerciseor for work, only where the work cannot be done remotely.

Public Health Units do have the authority to require workplaces to shutdown; however, the province is putting the onus on employers todetermine which staff can work remotely.

Ontario Temporarily Pauses Residential Evictions

The Ontario government has issued an emergency order to temporarilypause the enforcement of residential evictions and ensure people arenot forced to leave their homes during the provincial declaration ofemergency. This emergency order will also protect homeowners whoare facing evictions due to court orders for possession of theirproperties.

Ontario Provides Funding for Autism Training

The Ontario government is providing $7.5 million to help educatorsbetter support children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The funding willbe used to deliver online courses and training opportunities for teachers

and educational assistants in all 72 of Ontario's district school boardsstarting in 2021.

In addition to online training, Ontario is investing in subsidies foreducators to take the ASD-specific Additional Qualification course, andfunding to build the capacity of school leaders to support students onthe autism spectrum.

Federal Update

Consultation to strengthen Canadians’ online safety

The Federal Government is currently undertaking consultations tostrengthen measures protecting against cyber-attacks. Botnets facilitatesome of the most damaging cyber-attacks, including ransomware andidentity theft and can cause significant harm to Canadians, businessesand organizations that provide critical services.

Participate in the consultation by March 15th through the online form.
