SAINT OF THE WEEK:
ST. JAMES of the MARCHES
November 28
James Gangala was born and lived in central Italy along the Adriatic Sea in the fifteenth century. Receiving doctorates in canon and civil law, he still led a very austere life as a Franciscan Friar. He fasted nine months of the year and slept only three hours per night. He began a preaching career that took him all over Italy and 13 European countries.
His preaching converted many - 250,000 estimated - and spread devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus. He wanted the word of God to take root in the hearts of his listeners. He guided them by "preparing the soil", removing any rocks and softening up their lives hardened by sin. He was canonized in 1726.

Weekly Message from Deacon Rob on the Readings for Christ the King
People in modern times have an issue with the concept of royalty. In an era during which people are accustomed to freedoms and a belief in the equality of all people, the concept of royalty has become all but extinct. Today, people yearn, and many have the right to choose their leaders, to determine their way of life, where they live, who they marry and a plethora of other decisions. It is not surprising that the concept of royalty has become practically anachronistic. Yet, despite this apparent anachronism, royalty still captivates and enchants people everywhere. It is the “Hallmark Moment” where the commoner encounters this anachronistic class of society that is found in wide range of films and stories that enchant modern people. Likewise, millions of dollars are spent by individuals in pursuance of old ancestral documents in hopes of discovering some connection to this diminishing class. As a result, there still lingers a desire by people for that “special” person who is set aside by birth to govern and protect the “commoner”. Today’s solemnity recognizes that unique individual who, by Divine Assent, was sent to fulfill that unquenchable desire in humans – a desire that yearns for justice, peace, protection and guidance. That person is Jesus the Lord and King of the Universe.
In the second Book of Samuel, this desire for humans to be led by an unique individual is revealed when David is anointed King over all of Israel. This is David’s third anointing revealing that he has been chosen by God and his people to be the one ruler under whom they will look forward to experiencing the peace, justice, protection and guidance desired. This anointing creates a covenant whereby all parties God, people and king, are sworn to observe and live out this new familial relationship. The people must obey the king and the king must given them protection, guidance and justice. All must observe the Laws of God. As long as this covenant is in effect, God will continue to bless the royal line and the country.
This concept of Divine protection is continued with coming of the Messiah, a descendent of David, whose kingdom is the fruition of the Divine Redemptive Plan. In the reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians, the Apostle to the Gentiles clarifies this new relationship of the converted when he says, “…He has delivered us from the power of darkness and transferred us to the Kingdom of His beloved Son…”. This transference
and inclusion will bring the peace, justice, protection and guidance that all humans seek, even the Gentiles. Paul continues to extol the origins of Jesus’ kingdom and establishes the Christ as the “firstborn”. According to the apostle, Jesus is the reason for creation. All exists for his glory and he is what holds all together. Paul explains that that Christ’s dominion is inclusive of all space and time. It
is this dominion that is eternal and holds dominion even over death which was conquered through the Cross. This victory makes Jesus King of the Universe with its restoration to perfection accomplished through him.
It is not surprising, then, that the Gospel account today is that of the crucifixion. Using Luke’s account, the apparent humiliation and failure of Jesus’ mission is described in detail. As soldiers, people and authorities cast insults and challenges to Christ on the Cross, Jesus still finds it appropriate and obligatory to offer solace, assurance and hope to a repentant criminal crucified with him. Demonstrating this supreme act of a true king and shepherd, Christ performs his self-sacrifice with grace and dignity. Through the Cross, the Lord reveals the true essence of a king who gives his last out of love for his kingdom. Instead of answering the public challenges with the power at his disposal, he uses that same power to endure and reveal the true meaning of the love he and His Father has for mankind. He takes the hate, shame and disgrace of the cross and transforms it into a symbol of true Love and honor. It is this transformation that marks the beginning of the New and Eternal Kingdom that he establishes.
Holy Mother the Church reminds us that we are members of that Kingdom descended from David. In today’s world, we are called to put our faith and trust in our King and Lord, knowing that His Love will bring us the peace, joy, love, safety and justice we desire. While modern man flirts with democracy and free will, Christians are called to imitate their King and demonstrate that agape love he showed on the Cross. Through the Cross, we can transform and overcome the weaknesses of the world and bring His Kingdom to fruition and perfection. Through the celebration of this solemnity, we set aside our free will and commit ourselves to be ruled by the one and perfect King, Jesus the Christ!
