Stewardship Reflections
22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
“Rather, when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crip-
pled, the lame, the blind; blessed indeed will you be because of
their inability to repay you." Luke 14:13 -14
We have a difficult time with the concept of giving
without expecting something in return. Even when we
give to charity we often want something in return – a
raffle ticket, a dinner, or a chance to play golf. Yet, as
Christian stewards we need to remember that the true
reward for our giving awaits us in heaven.

Sunday in Ordinary Time
Today the first reading from Sirach and the Gospel of Luke speak of the virtue of humility. Usually we think of this word as meaning “being humble,” or we ascribe a pejorative quality to the word and associate it with being humiliated. None of us enjoys being belittled or humiliated. But humility when considered as a virtue is both positive and helpful to us. The first reading says, “The mind of a sage appreciates proverbs, and an attentive ear is the joy of the wise.” True humility is concerned with being “teachable”—being open to the possibility of learning something new. Learning something new can be difficult. We must first be willing to admit that we might not know everything and we also must open our minds to accepting a new idea. Often as we age we become “set in our ways.” We see things as we have always seen them—we imagine that things cannot change. Each generation struggles with this truth. When we find ourselves being critical of young people or changes in society we are probably struggling against change. It takes true humility to look at and understand the attitudes and understandings of younger people and modern society. When we bother to understand often what is new is not at all frightening. We can become “set in our ways” in the religious arena. Perhaps we have always thought one way about a particular issue or sin. Upon investigation, is it possible for us to change our way of thinking? Perhaps we have always been afraid of God and have been preoccupied with our personal sins. Maybe the Sacrament of Penance is frightening to us. Would it be possible to change? Yes! Are we humble enough to learn something new and begin living in a new way? Let us pray for that grace.
Reflections by Father Karl
