We sing our opening hymn:

Rise, children of the kingdom

v. 1,3,5

LH 8 CAL 293

Johann Rist 1607-77

Tr composite, based on Catherine Winkworth

Rise, children of the kingdom

1. Rise, children of the kingdom,

the King is drawing near;

with joy arise and greet him;

the Lord will soon appear.

All Christian people, come:

your praise and honour bring him,

and loud hosannas sing him,

your hearts on fire with love.

Rise, children of the kingdom

3. Arise, all you downhearted,

the King is almost here;

your misery has ended,

the morning star appears.

The Lord will give you joy;

though troubles now distress you,

with comfort he will bless you,

and even death destroy.

Rise, children of the kingdom

5. How richly, Lord, you bless us,

yourself made poor and weak!

What love beyond expression

that can us sinners seek!

For this, O Lord, will we

our joyful praises bring you

and loud hosannas sing you

and always grateful be. †

31

FIRST READING

R: The first reading for the second Sunday of Advent is written in Chapter eleven of Isaiah beginning at verse one.

Isaiah 11:1-10 CEV

The longed-for Messiah

32

Isaiah 11:1-10

Like a branch that sprouts from a stump, someone from David's family will someday be king.

2The Spirit of the LORD will be with him to give him understanding, wisdom, and insight.

He will be powerful, and he will know and honour the LORD.

33

Isaiah 11:1-10

3His greatest joy will be to obey the LORD.

This king won't judge by appearances or listen to rumours. 4The poor and the needy will be treated with fairness and with justice. His word will be law everywhere in the land, and criminals will be put to death. 5Honesty and fairness will be his royal robes.

34

Isaiah 11:1-10

6Leopards will lie down with young goats, and wolves will rest with lambs. Calves and lions will eat together and be cared for by little children. 7Cows and bears will share the same pasture; their young will rest side by side. Lions and oxen will both eat straw.

35

Isaiah 11:1-10

8Little children will play near snake holes. They will stick their hands into dens of poisonous snakes and never be hurt.

9Nothing harmful will take place on the LORD'S holy mountain. Just as water fills the sea, the land will be filled with people who know and honour the LORD.

36

Isaiah 11:1-10

10The time is coming when one of David's descendants will be the signal for the people of all nations to come together. They will follow his advice, and his own nation will become famous.

This is the Word of the Lord.C: Thanks be to God.

37

Psalm 72:1-7,18,19 CEV

R: The Psalm is Psalm 721I run to you, LORD, for protection.

Don't disappoint me. C: 2You do what is right, so come to

my rescue. Listen to my prayer and keep me safe.

38

Psalm 72:1-7,18,19 CEV

R: 3Be my mighty rock, the place where I can always run for protection. Save me by your command! You are my mighty rock and my fortress.

C: 4Come and save me, LORD God, from vicious and cruel and brutal enemies!

39

Psalm 72:1-7,18,19 CEV

R: 5I depend on you, and I have trusted you since I was young.

C: 6I have relied on you from the day I was born. You brought me safely through birth, and I always praise you.

40

Psalm 72:1-7,18,19 CEV

R: 7Many people think of me as something evil. But you are my mighty protector,

C: 18Don't leave me when I am old and my hair turns gray. Let me tell future generations about your mighty power.

41

Psalm 72:1-7,18,19 CEV

R: 19Your deeds of kindness are known in the heavens. No one is like you!

C: Glory to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit;

As it was in the beginning is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

42

Second READING

R: The second reading is written in Chapter 15 of Romans beginning at verse four.

Romans 15:4-13 CEV

Good news for the Gentiles

43

Romans 15:4-13

4The Scriptures were written to teach and encourage us by giving us hope.

5God is the one who makes us patient and cheerful.

I pray that he will help you live at peace with each other, as you follow Christ. 6Then all of you together will praise God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

44

Romans 15:4-13

7Honor God by accepting each other, as Christ has accepted you.

8I tell you that Christ came as a servant of the Jews to show that God has kept the promises he made to their famous ancestors.

45

Romans 15:4-13

Christ also came, 9so that the Gentiles would praise God for being kind to them.

It is just as the Scriptures say, "I will tell the nations about you, and I will sing praises to your name."

10The Scriptures also say to the Gentiles, "Come and celebrate with God's people."

46

Romans 15:4-13

11Again the Scriptures say, "Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles. All you nations, come and worship him.”

12Isaiah says, "Someone from David's family will come to power. He will rule the nations, and they will put their hope in him.”

47

Romans 15:4-13

13I pray that God, who gives hope, will bless you with complete happiness and peace because of your faith. And may the power of the Holy Spirit fill you with hope.

This is the Word of the Lord.C: Thanks be to God.

48

GOSPEL

• M: The Holy Gospel is written in Chapter 3 of the Gospel according to St. Matthew beginning at verse 1.

C: ♫ Glory be to you, O Lord.

CEV

Matthew 3:1-12

M: Years later, John the Baptist started preaching in the desert of Judea.

2He said, "Turn back to God! The kingdom of heaven will soon be here.

55

Matthew 3:1-12

3John was the one the prophet Isaiah was talking about, when he said, "In the desert someone is shouting, 'Get the road ready for the Lord! Make a straight path for him.' "

4John wore clothes made of camel's hair. He had a leather strap around his waist and ate grasshoppers and wild honey. 56

Matthew 3:1-12

5From Jerusalem and all Judea and from the Jordan River Valley crowds of people went to John. 6They told how sorry they were for their sins, and he baptized them in the river.

57

Matthew 3:1-12

7Many Pharisees and Sadducees also came to be baptized. But John said to them:

You bunch of snakes! Who warned you to run from the coming judgment? 8Do something to show that you have really given up your sins.

58

Matthew 3:1-12

9And don't start telling yourselves that you belong to Abraham's family. I tell you that God can turn these stones into children for Abraham.

10An axe is ready to cut the trees down at their roots. Any tree that doesn't produce good fruit will be chopped down and thrown into a fire.

59

Matthew 3:1-12

11I baptize you with water so that you will give up your sins.

But someone more powerful is going to come, and I am not good enough even to carry his sandals.

60

Matthew 3:1-12

He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. 12His threshing fork is in his hand, and he is ready to separate the wheat from the husks. He will store the wheat in a barn and burn the husks in a fire that never goes out.

This is the Gospel of the LordC: ♫ Praise be to you, O Christ.

Hymn

We sing :

Blest be the tie that binds

LH 797 CAL 293

John Fawcett 1740-1817, alt.

70

Blest be the tie that binds

1. Blest be the tie that binds

our hearts in Christian love;

the fellowship of kindred minds

is like to that above.

71

Blest be the tie that binds

2. Before our Father’s throne

we pour our ardent prayers;

our fears, our hopes, our aims, are one,

our comforts and our cares.

72

Blest be the tie that binds

3. We share our mutual woes,

our mutual burdens bear,

and often for each other flows

the sympathizing tear.

73

Blest be the tie that binds

4. From sorrow, toil, and pain,

and sin we shall be free,

and perfect love and friendship reign

through all eternity.

74

Sermon

We sing our next hymn as our freewill offerings are received:

Comfort, comfort ye My peopleLH 12 CAL293

Tröstet, tröstet meine Lieben

Johannes Olearius 1611-84

Tr Catherine Winkworth

1829-78 (1863), alt.75

Comfort, comfort ye My people

1. 'Comfort, comfort my dear people,

speak of peace', so says our God;'comfort those who sit in darkness, mourning under sorrow's load.Tell them in Jerusalemthat my pardon is for them, that their suffering now is over;they will live in peace forever.

76

Comfort, comfort ye My people

2. 'All their sins I will forgive them, every evil deed they've done.Though they all deserved my angerI will pardon everyone. They have suffered many a day,now their griefs have passed away;I will change their gloom and

sadnessinto comfort, peace, and gladness.'

77

Comfort, comfort ye My people

3. Hear a herald voice now cryingin the desert far and near, calling all to true repentance, since the kingdom now is here.O that warning cry obey:For the Lord prepare a way:let the valleys rise to meet himand the hills bow down to greet him.

78

Comfort, comfort ye My people

4. Straighten out what has been crooked,

make the rougher places plain;let your hearts be true and humble, fit and ready for his reign. For the glory of the Lordover all the earth is poured;everyone will see so clearlythat God's word will stand securely.
