SOUTH

AFRICA

MOZAMBIQUE

SWAZILAND >ALL ABOUTSOUTH AFRICAWELCOME TO THE RAINBOW NATION! South Africa, as can be gathered from its name, is the country furthest to the south of the African continent. It is a vast country in terms of land area and has varying plateaus and climates from province to province. It is bounded on the south by 2,798 kilometers of coastline of southern Africa stretching along the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. South Africa is the 25th-largest country in the world by land area, and with close to 53 million people, is the world’s 24th-most populous nation. Prided as the “Rainbow Nation”, South Africa is a multicultural society and is the only country in the world to have 11 official languages and national anthem using those different languages. Although English is spoken widely in across the country, it is surprisingly ranked as fourth on the list of official languages behind Afrikaans, Zulu and Xhosa.

OUR WORK IN SOUTH AFRICASouth Africa is a young nation in its current form, and although peaceful it is facing challenges relating to poverty, health, education, inequalities and housing in particular. Approximately 1.9 million informal shacks exist in here, which provide poor quality living environments, with limited access to amenities such as water and electricity and are extremely vulnerable to fire and weather damage. The population living in these informal shacks and also in more legal versions, called Townships, are generally those facing poverty, unemployment, poor health, high rates of HIV/AIDS, and have little access to education. There is a large gap creating inequalities in the quality of the lives amongst South Africa’s population.

Our primary target communities are around the Hout Bay area where we engage and empower youth in education and personal development activities, with the hope of improved future options and avoidance of negative behaviours such as substance use and joining gangs. We also support social enterprise to assist with employment and skill transfer to local community members.

CULTURE & HISTORYThe country boasts some of the world’s most exciting attractions ranging from natural scenery, beaches and wildlife to bustling cities rich in cultural diversity. Cape Town is known as the “Mother City” and encapsulates much of the diversity South Africa is famous for. It is steeped in history but is also one of the world’s most beautiful cities. With its dramatic mountain backdrops and white sand beaches with an amazing diversity of cultures and associated urban life, it is hard to beat.

In 1990 President Frederik Willem de Klerk began negotiations to end apartheid, culminating in multi-racial democratic elections in 1994, won by the African National Congress (ANC) under Nelson Mandela. Since the ruling African National Congress (ANC) has made strides to overcome the historic segregation and create unified national loyalties on the basis of equal rights and access to amenities for all.

Although once ravaged by the apartheid regime, South Africa is a young nation in its current form; has fast become a melting pot of cultures and has moved towards international acclaim for its diversity and beauty.

You will be working in an urban township, where modesty will be an important factor to remember as you work with local people. Making sure you dress appropriately will be important to gaining the respect of your partners. More information about the dress code will follow in the pre-flight guide.

SOUTH AFRICAN WEATHER February is the hottest month in Cape Town with an average temperature of 23°C (73°F) and the coldest is June at 13°C (55°F) with the most daily sunshine hours at 11.05 in December. The wettest month is July with an average of 100mm of rain.

SUPPORT FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIESApart from the normal struggles of living with a disability, social stigma and discrimination surrounding disabilities mean that People With Disabilities (PWD) face even greater challenges. In many instances, PWDs are not afforded the same opportunities as regular members of society, and this in turn means they are often unable to contribute productively to their communities.

Your role will be based in a local care centre, which provides social activities, food, assistance with day-to-day life and vocational training. You will work alongside centre staff, assisting them and taking on responsibilities as your skills and experience allows. It was discovered by medical workers that persons with disabilities were not accessing medical treatment and services, many were left at home alone with no assistance and some without food. They were also facing negative social attitudes and perceptions, and social stigma.

ACCOMMODATION & MEALSDuring your stay you will be accommodated in an award winning Hout Bay Backpackers, in Hout Bay. Three meals a day will also be provided, some on a self-serve basis and others cooked for you.
