Tweet From Pope Francis Be like Saint Joseph: a man of dreams, not a dreamer; a man of silence, because he re-spects God's plan. 12/18
DID YOU KNOW? Always keep your blind spots in mind Each week, more than 50 children are killed or injured when a driver backs up the car. In an over-whelming number of those cases, a parent, relative, or close friend is behind the wheel. It’s devastating to think that a simple action could cause such harm to your child, but it happens far too frequently. Be aware of your ‘blind spots’ when you’re behind the wheel — those areas you know are there, but can’t see clearly from your mir-rors. Check out what’s happening around your vehicle before you get in. Make sure you know where your chil-dren are before you start your car. THE HOLY FAMILY OF NAZARETH
Merry Christmas Season! Last Tuesday, we celebrated Christmas, the birth of Jesus. In our Christmas stories, we constantly hear three names; Joseph, Mary and Jesus. This weekend, we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family where we take closer look at the relationship between the three of them. Je-sus launched the Redemption of the world from the heart of a family. The first thing that Jesus sanctified with His presence was a home. Joseph, as head of the family, supported Mary and Jesus with His work. It is he who received the message as to what name he must give the Child. When the life of the child Jesus and His mother Mary were in danger, he protected them by taking them to Egypt.
From Mary, Jesus learned certain phrases, popular expressions full of wis-dom, which He would later use in His preaching. Many of Jesus’ stories and parables are drawn from family life. He must have seen Mary prepare dough for bread, loose a coin, etc. so these everyday events appeared in His teachings. Mary, like millions of mothers, spent every day of her life participating in the formation of her Son. By answering the everyday questions of her Son, she passed on the cultural and religious values of the family and of society to her Son.
The family is the simplest and most basic form of society and of the church. That is why the family is called the “domestic church.” It is the main school of all the social virtues. It is the seed-bed of social life. It is in the family that we learn to practice obedience, concern for others, a sense of responsibility, understanding and mutual help, prayer, and a loving co-ordination of essentially different characters. Indeed, it has been proved that the health of a society is measured by the health of its families. Like you, I am spending this year’s Feast of Holy Family with my brothers and their families to experience again the joy and tension of family. This weekend, we pray to the Holy Family in a very special way for all families and, in particular families, in our Parish. I must add that I am encouraged by the number of families that come to Mass together here at As-sumption.
May the Virgin Mary, who is the Mother of the Church, pray for all homes. May she, the sorrowful Mother, at the foot of the Cross, comfort the sufferings and dry the tears of those in distress because of the difficulties of their family life. May Christ the Lord, the King of Families, be present in every Christian home as He was at Cana, bestowing light, joy, serenity and strength.
Amen Fr. Mike E. Ume
Thank You Environment Committee
Many thanks to our Environment Committee for the beautiful church decorations. Thanks also to all those who contributed poin-settias in the names of their loved ones. Your efforts en-hanced our worship. Thank you!

FEAST DAY OF THE HOLY FAMILY PARISH FAMILIES ACTIVITY TAKE
HOME SHEET Sunday, December 30, 2018
In celebration of the Feast Day of the Holy Family, we encourage parish families to use the Parish Families’ Activity Take Home Sheet as a won-derful resource to gather, dialogue and break bread together in spiritual nourishment. The Church encourages families to partake in this special cele-
bration as families are called to imitate the Holy Family in the education of our children in virtue and holiness.
Please visit http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/familylife/marriage/Documents/Feast%20HF-PFSheet.pdf to ac-cess the PDF on the Office of Family Life website.
Habitat for Humanity SGV Catholic Coalition: The Young Adult Ministry (YAM) will be volunteering for their next Assumption Build Day on Saturday, February 2, 2019. Think about how you can volunteer as a worker, making lunch for the workers, or sponsoring. There will be more info coming in Janu-
ary, 2019. Questions? Contact Terri Lauerman at [email protected].
Phishing (again)
It has come to our attention that Fr. Mike is the target of a phishing scam again. This time, in addition to phony emails appearing to be from Fr. Mike, text messages ask-ing you to call are being circulated.
If you receive any of these, please do not answer them. If you have a question about an email or text message you have received, please call the rectory to confirm it is truly from Fr. Mike.
St. Elizabeth Ann Seaton Feast Day, January 4
Elizabeth Ann Bayley was born in New York City on August 28, 1774 to a prominent Episcopal family, and lost her mother at the age of three. In 1794, at the age of 19, Elizabeth married William Magee Seton, a wealthy businessman with whom she had five children. William died of tuberculosis in 1803, leaving Elizabeth a young widow. After discovering Catholi-cism in Italy, where her husband had died, Elizabeth returned to the United States and entered the Catholic Church in 1805 in New York.
After a number of difficult years, Elizabeth moved in 1809 to Emmitsburg, Maryland, where she founded the Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph’s, the first community for religious women established in the United States. She also began St. Joseph’s Academy and Free School, planting the seeds of Catholic education in the United States. Her leg-acy now includes religious congregations in the United States and Canada, whose members work on the unmet needs of people living in poverty in North America and beyond.
Mother Seton, as she is often called, was canonized on Sunday, September 14, 1975 in St. Peter’s Square by Pope Paul VI. She was the first citizen born in the United States to be given the title of “Saint.” Her remains are entombed in Emmitsburg in the Basilica at the National Shrine that bears her name.

Faith Formation News Society of St. Vincent de Paul Assumption Conference
Today, on this Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, consider a family you might know who doesn’t have as much as you have, or a family who is struggling.
Consider lending a helping hand by having them over for dinner or helping them out with babysitting. Perhaps you could give up some clothes that have been outgrown, or an extra coat that you haven’t worn in awhile. The mes-sage of the Gospel is to love our neighbor as we love ourselves. So think about ways to love your neighbor. A kind hello, waving as you drive by, helping bring the trash cans in from the curb and many other small deeds go a long way to tell someone else they matter.
Loving our neighbor as we love ourselves. Could there be a better New Year's resolution?
If you would like to know more about joining our Confer-ence, or if you know someone who needs assistance, please call our hotline: (626) 657-0836.
If you would like to make a monetary donation to be used in helping those in need, please use the Assumption-SSVdP tan envelope provided in the pew.
Remember, 100% of your donation serves the poor!
