This was a rough week, we had 4 funerals in 7 days. I told my father and he

asked how many baptisms I had that weekend that was included in the 7

days, and I responded 2, my dad chided me that I had the proportions all

backward and I should have twice as many baptisms as funerals. One thing

about being in the parish as your pastor for these past 8 years is that I real‐

ly got a chance to know many if not most of our parishioners, maybe not

all by name, but by sight. During the Covid lockout, I missed seeing every‐

one, and as restrictions were lifted and the dispensation eliminated, I be‐

gan to see many of the familiar faces again. But as the rosary at the

Knights of Columbus drove home, the fact is we have lost many people in

the past 18�24 months, we lost 21 members of our knights’ council, not

including spouses. We have lost many more parishioners as well, some we

have buried from the parish, others their children decided against a Catho‐

lic funeral. �

�

I was having a conversation the other day with a person who hasn’t been

vaccinated and has no plans to be vaccinated and when I asked why, they

told me that rather than being worried about not getting sick and dying,

people should spend more time being spiritually prepared to die. My friend

had a point, that yes, indeed we need to focus more on being prepared to

meet our Maker but part of that is, like a good steward, making a good

accounting of how we used all the gifts the Lord has given us, including

taking care of out temple of the Holy Spirit (our earthly bodies). I remind‐

ed this person of St. Paul’s letter to the Philippians, “For to me life is

Christ, and death is gain. If I go on living in the flesh, that means fruitful

labor for me. And I do not know which I shall choose. I am caught between

the two. I long to depart this life and be with Christ, [for] that is far better.

Yet that I remain [in] the flesh is more necessary for your benefit.” There‐

fore, while it is true, we need to be prepared to die at any moment, we also

need to do our best to prepare to live to serve the Lord. �

Hi everybody!!! I

can’t believe it’s

already August

15th, that’s half‐

way through the

month and it

seems like it just

started… Several of my friends have

birthdays this week , today is “Tom

the Good”, Tuesday is “Tulita” and

Friday is Fr. Bernardo… Happy Birth‐

day guys!!! I love birthdays because it’s

a way we remember how great God is

to give us special people in our lives… I

also love birthdays because I love

birthday cake … Daddy says it’s

kind of funny because some people,

especially some ladies… don’t like to

celebrate their birthdays because it

makes them feel old… Daddy says we

should celebrate because it means we

survived another year… Did you know

we are just 6 weeks away from our Fall

Block Party??? I hope everyone comes

and has a good time… I’ve seen a lot of

the Dream Raffle gifts… they stage

them in Daddy’s rectory, and I can tell

you they are great!!! I’m looking for‐

ward to seeing everyone this year and

eating food again… especially treats

from the Sweet Shop… The Big Raffle

is even bigger this year with a top prize

of $12,000… I can’t wait… Stay cool

and keep your paws dry (and clean)

and your tummy full… �

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT�

In today’s Gospel we hear Mary’s cousin, Elizabeth, bestow the gift of two blessings on Mary when she greets her. Elizabeth blesses

Mary not only because she believes that Mary is the mother of the Lord, but also because she recognizes that Mary has complete faith

in God’s promise. When Elizabeth prophetically pronounces Mary “blessed … among women” and proclaims that the fruit of Mary’s

womb is blessed, she uses the same term that Jesus uses to bless people in the Beatitudes. Good stewards recognize the Spirit�driven

love and courage that inspired Elizabeth’s hospitality toward a young, unmarried, pregnant woman and the honor Elizabeth bestowed

upon Mary who would ordinarily be shamed for bearing this child. In what ways can we extend the blessings we receive in the Eucharis‐

tic celebration to others in order to honor them and offer them God’s hospitality? �

Esta fue una semana difícil, tuvimos 4 funerales en 7 días. Le conté a mi

papá y me preguntó cuántos Bautismos habíamos tenido ese fin de sema‐

na que estaba incluido en los 7 días, yo le respondí que 2, mi papá me dijo

que tenía las proporciones al revés y que debería tener el doble de Bautis‐

mos. Una cosa acerca de estar en la parroquia como su párroco durante

estos últimos 8 años es que realmente tuve la oportunidad de conocer a

muchos, si no a la mayoría, de nuestros feligreses, tal vez no a todos por

su nombre, sino de vista. Durante el cierre de Covid, extrañé verlos a to‐

dos, y cuando se levantaron las restricciones y se eliminó la dispensación,

comencé a ver muchas de las caras conocidas nuevamente. Hemos perdi‐

do a muchas personas en los últimos 18�24 meses, perdimos a 21 miem‐

bros de nuestros Caballeros de Colón, sin incluir los cónyuges. También

hemos perdido a muchos más feligreses, algunos los hemos enterrado de

la parroquia, a otros sus hijos decidieron no llevar a cabo un funeral Cató‐

lico. �

�

El otro día tuve una conversación con una persona que no se ha vacunado

y no tiene planes de vacunarse, y cuando le pregunté por qué, me dijo que

en vez de preocuparnos de no enfermarnos y morir, las personas deben

de pasar más tiempo preparándose espiritualmente para morir. Mi cono‐

cido tenía un punto, que sí, de hecho, debemos centrarnos más en estar

preparados para encontrarnos con nuestro Hacedor, pero parte de eso es,

como un buen corresponsable, hacer una buena contabilidad de cómo

utilizamos todos los dones que el Señor nos ha concedido, incluyendo

cuidar nuestro templo del Espíritu Santo (nuestros cuerpos aquí en la tie‐

rra). Le recordé a esta persona de la Carta de San Pablo a los Filipenses:

“Porque para mí la vida es Cristo, y la muerte, una ganancia. Pero si la

vida en este cuerpo me permite seguir trabajando fructuosamente, ya no

sé qué elegir. Me siento urgido de ambas partes: deseo irme para estar

con Cristo, porque es mucho mejor, pero por el bien de ustedes es preferi‐

ble que permanezca en este cuerpo”. Por lo tanto, si bien es cierto que

debemos estar preparados para morir en cualquier momento, también

debemos hacer todo lo posible preparándonos para vivir y servir al Señor. �

¡¡¡Hola a todos!!! No puedo creer que

ya sea el 15 de agosto, eso es la mitad

del mes y parece que acaba de comen‐

zar… Varios de mis amigos cumplen

años esta semana , hoy es el de

“Tom el Bueno”, el martes el de

“Tulita” y el viernes el del Padre Ber‐

nardo… ¡¡¡Feliz cumpleaños a todos!!!

Me encantan los cumpleaños porque es

una forma en que recordamos lo gran‐

dioso que es Dios para darnos personas

especiales en nuestras vidas… También

me encantan los cumpleaños porque

me encanta el pastel … Mi papi dice

que es chistoso porque algunas perso‐

nas, especialmente algunas damas…

no les gusta celebrar sus cumpleaños

porque las hace sentir viejitas… Mi papi

dice que debemos celebrar porque eso

significa que sobrevivimos otro año…

¿Sabían que estamos a solo 6 semanas

de nuestro festival? Espero que todos

vengan y se diviertan… Ya vi muchas

de los premios de la Rifa Ensueño…las

dejan en la rectoría de mi papi, y les

puedo decir que ¡están geniales! Estoy

ansiosa de verlos a todos este año y

volver a comer…especialmente golosi‐

nas de la Tiendita de Golosinas… La

Gran Rifa es aun más grande este año

con un gran premio de $12,000…Ya

quiero que llegue… Mantengan sus

pies secos (y limpios) y su panza (un

poco menos) llena... �

UN MOMENTO DE CORRESPONSABILIDAD�

En el Evangelio de hoy escuchamos a la prima de María, Isabel, otorgar el regalo de dos bendiciones a María cuando la saluda. Isabel

bendice a María no sólo porque cree que María es la madre del Señor, sino también porque reconoce que María tiene fe plena en la

promesa de Dios. Cuando Isabel pronuncia proféticamente, María “bendita… entre las mujeres” y proclama que el fruto del vientre de

María es bendecido, utiliza el mismo término que Jesús usa para bendecir a las personas en las Bienaventuranzas. Los buenos corres‐

ponsables reconocen el amor y el valor impulsados por el Espíritu que inspiraron la hospitalidad de Isabel hacia una mujer joven, soltera

y embarazada y el honor que Isabel otorgó a María, quien normalmente se avergonzaría de tener a este hijo. ¿De qué manera pode‐

mos extender las bendiciones que recibimos en la celebración eucarística a otros para honrarlos y ofrecerles la hospitalidad de Dios? �

a very special day

for women,

Wednesday Sep‐

We will visit the Sorrow‐

ful Mother Shrine in

Bellevue, Ohio. Septem‐

ber 8th is also the feast

day of the Nativity of

Mary.� Join us for a day of prayer and spiritual renewal on the

beautiful grounds of the Sorrowful Mother Shrine. The trip is

open to all women of the parish, their friends and family.�

�

We will travel by Trinity motor coach departing St. Alfred at

8:30 AM, returning at 5:30 PM. The� cost is $25 per person,

including lunch. Our day:�

10:00 AM� Arrival �

10�11:00 AM� Confessions, for those interested ��

11:00 AM� Mass �

�

The Devotional Service will include: Chaplet of the Sorrowful

Mother, Benediction, a spiritual talk with our designated

priest, blessing of religious articles & blessing of all pilgrims

with relic of the Cross, the Sorrowful Mother Shrine gift shop.�

We will have time to walk the beautiful grounds, or just sit in

peace with�Mary. We can enjoy the company of one another.

There is room on the coach to store any walker's that may be

needed, we will� be provided a six person golf cart for those

who may need assistance.��

Please reserve your seat as soon as possible, space is limited.

The deadline is September 1st, or until we reach the maxi‐

mum. You can pay by check to Christian Women. Please drop

it in the collection basket to our attention, bring it to the par‐

ish office, or mail it in. Please provide a good phone number

Las pulseras de WWJD estaban de moda hace

unos 25 años en los círculos cristianos. Siempre

me he preguntado si un brazalete de WWMD

(What Would Mary Do? / ¿Qué haría María?) no

tendría el mismo sentido, y tal vez más. ¿Qué

haría María?�

�

Yo diría que María fue la corresponsable más

ejemplar que jamás haya existido. Su respuesta

siempre fue "Sí". Sí, Señor, soy Tu sierva. Sí,

visitaré a Elizabeth y la ayudaré en los últimos

meses difíciles del embarazo. Sí, criaré a mi hijo

en la ley mosaica y lo presentaré en el templo

de Jerusalén. Sí, lo entregaré a las multitudes y

al ministerio público. Sí, lo ofreceré en esta

Cruz, si es Tu voluntad.�

�

Si, si, si.�

�

Bueno, no puedo ser como María, pensamos

para nosotros mismos. Hay un factor de intimi‐

dación con la Santísima Virgen y los católicos a

veces, uno que casi supera al de Cristo. Tal vez

sea porque estamos asombrados por el hecho

de que ella no era divina de ninguna manera,

era una mera creación, como nosotros, pero de

alguna manera, siempre tuvo la valentía de de‐

cir que sí. ¿Cómo pudo hacerlo, cuando a noso‐

tros nos resulta tan difícil?�

�

Bueno, Dios ciertamente prodigó gracias extra‐

ordinarias a María. Su falta de pecado original la

liberó para conformar su voluntad a la de Dios.�

�

Pero Dios está impaciente por darnos también a

nosotros todas las gracias que necesitamos para

ser corresponsables en el ejemplo de María. Es‐

tá esperando que nosotros simplemente se lo

pidamos. Así como en Adán morimos, también

en Cristo, a través de María, vivimos.�

�

¿A qué podemos decir que sí el día de hoy, en el

ejemplo de María? �
