Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three
Tweet From Pope Francis The more we are rooted in Christ, the more we rediscover interior peace, even in the midst of daily challenges. 1/10
G reetings my good friends,
Last Sunday, Epiphany, ended the Christmas season. We begin today on the Second Sunday in Ordinary Time focusing on the call of God to follow Him.
The first reading, from the Book of Samuel, describes Samuel’s own calling from God, and his need of another person, Eli, to help him understand what is involved in being called by God. Samuel had no knowledge of God and did not understand the call, eventually, Eli realized that it was God who was calling Samuel. Eli’s advice to Samuel was so simple. When God calls, say, ''Speak Lord, for your servant is listening.'' (1 Samuel 3:9)
The Gospel today follows the same theme. It begins with John the Baptist recognizing Jesus as the Lamb of God, just as Eli recognized God in the call to Samuel. In this case, two of John’s disciples immediately followed Jesus, who asked them, ''What are you looking for?" (John 1:38). We all know that they wanted to follow Jesus and learn from Him and be one of His disciples. Jesus reassured them and welcomed them, ''Come and you will see.'' (John 1:39)
It is a fact that sometimes we need others to set us on the right path to Jesus. Sometimes it takes the form of a simple invitation, or explanation, or even advice. In a lot of cases, that's just enough to set another on fire for the Lord. Our Lord wants us all to follow Him with a passion for love, justice, and peace. Many of us never hear the Call of God due to all the other distractions that cloud our minds. Both Eli and John, in the scriptures this weekend, pointed out the holy presence of God. Once that was acknowledged by those who were being called, they followed the Lord.
Often I am asked the question, ''What is the Call of the Lord? Did you receive it?" I believe the Call of the Lord comes in many ways. I encountered many people during those years when I was contemplating going to the seminary to become a priest: and they helped me to make a good decision. They didn't share profound reasons for going or not going, but it was their simplicity that touched me, their prayers and friendships, their advice and encouragement. Some just told me to trust in the Lord, not to be afraid, to listen and watch for the signs.
The early followers of Jesus, who we encounter today in the Gospel, needed the same encouragement; they followed the Lord with a passion to serve as Jesus served.
To be a follower of Jesus is to be passionate about your
call from the Lord. Do you feel called by the Lord? Have you ever felt it? Has anyone encouraged you to take a further step and truly be open to the Lord’s commands and His ways?
Why not, in your prayers and reflections, think about how God calls you on a daily basis.
He calls you to live a good life, totally focused on the Lord.
He calls you to love like He loved.
He calls you to forgive like He forgave.
He calls you to stand for the truth, and to never be afraid.
He calls you to give hope to those who are lost.
He calls you to be bearers of the light in a very darkened world.
There are numerous calls by the Lord upon us all. These are just a few, but it may help you to realize that God is calling you here and now for something so awesome that it will transform your lives in an instant! Have the courage to say to our great God,
''Speak Lord, for your servant is listening.''
L ast Saturday, the Sisters of the Holy
Child renewed their vows with their lay Associates. Sr. Susan, our Pastoral
Associate, is a member of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus. They are the sisters who staffed Assumption school in its early years.
Welcome to any visitors here this weekend, and to those of other faith traditions, we are graced by your presence here today. May God bless you all. Thanks to you parishioners, for your energetic presence here Sunday after Sunday. May the Good Lord always keep you in His care.
Love, Fr. Gerard

Ruthann Aull reflects on her retreat as a Weekend Com-muter: “Heading off for a weekend of spiritual reflection and quiet is a special opportunity in the life of a senior citizen still working. Pulling one's self from the busyness of daily demand activities provides challenge; yet, re-lief. While I have many times found respite on the Sa-cred Heart Retreat campus, this was my first with the ladies of ABVM. It was nice to be greeted and welcomed by Cheryl in the Library, and to meet the others gathered for the weekend retreat in the dining room for our regular meals. The "silence" aspect of the retreat did not allow for extended introductions but, the gift of faith and fellow-ship was evident.”
The retreat begins Friday evening, March 2, and con-cludes after Sunday Mass, about 12:30.

Faith Formation News Society of St. Vincent de Paul Assumption Conference
The Gospel today speaks of two disciples of John the Baptist hearing John call Jesus the “Lamb of God” as Jesus walked by.
The two then accepted Jesus’ invitation to follow Him to the place where He was staying and they stayed with Him that day. Isn’t this what can happen to us? We hear the call of Jesus and can choose to stay with Him for the day.
Then one of the men, Andrew, called his brother and brought him to Jesus. Andrew must have seen some-thing special in Jesus to bring his brother over. We do this too when we share our stories of Jesus’ impact on our lives with others. Additionally, Jesus renamed An-drew’s brother Simon, and called him Peter – “the rock”. Simon did nothing to earn the name or the intimate friendship with Jesus. It was freely given to him.
Following Jesus, remaining with Him, and inviting others to do the same is our mission as Christians. Our Vincen-tian mission adds that we include serving the poor, and in that process finding Jesus and leading others to Him. Jesus freely gives us the gifts we need along the way. If you feel a calling to serve those in need, maybe joining the Society of St. Vincent de Paul is what you’re looking for. Call our hotline to inquire further about this process.
If you know someone who needs assistance, please refer them to our hotline: (626)657-0836. If you would like to make a monetary donation to be used in helping those in need, please use the Assumption-SSVdP tan envelope provided in the pew. Remember too, 100% of your dona-tion serves the needy and the poor.

Ask kids open-ended questions Communication is key for making sure you are up to date with your kids’ lives, especially as they grow older and you can’t be with them every step of the way. One way to keep communication strong is to ask your kids open-ended questions. Kids may not spontane-ously tell you things that would be important for you to know, so you have to consider how to phrase questions that draw them in and allow them to share their thoughts and experiences. When you do ask open-ended ques-tions, make sure you are patient in waiting for the an-swers.
