The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary A Sunday Reflection
“FOR THE ALMIGHTY HAS DONE GREAT THINGS FOR ME” (LK 1:49).
Today the Church celebrates joyfully the solemnity of the Assumption of our Blessed Mother into heaven. It is fitting that God, who preserved her from the corruption of original sin at her conception, would now, at the end of her life preserve her from the corruption of the grave. It is only natural that the Son would want to have His mother with Him in heaven.
All of Mary’s privileges, all her titles, all her glory, stem from the one primordial fact, her greatest title: Mother of God. And this through the singular grace of God, Who — as she herself proclaims in today’s gospel — “has looked with favor on his lowly servant”, and “has done great things” for her (Lk 1:48-49).
Because of today’s feast, we will not be reading the next part of the discourse on the Bread of life that corresponds to the 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time, but we can hear the echo of Jesus’ words in this celebration. Without Mary’s cooperation, there would be no Bread of life. Without Mary’s “Yes”, the living bread would not have come down from heaven. It is thanks to her “Yes” that we “who eat this bread will live forever” (Jn 6:51).
Today, as we receive the Lord in the Eucharist, let us ask Mary to prepare in our hearts a worthy abode for her Son, that at the hour of our death we may find eternal life. God bless you!

La Asunción de la Santísima Virgen María Reflexión Dominical
“EL PODEROSO HA HECHO OBRAS GRANDES POR MI”(LC 1,49).
La Iglesia celebra hoy con júbilo la solemnidad de la Asunción de la Santísima Virgen al cielo. Es justo que Dios, que la preservó de la corrupción del pecado original en su concepción, al final de su vida la libre de la corrupción de la tumba. Es natural que el Hijo quiera tener consigo a su Madre en el cielo.
Todos los privilegios de María, todos sus títulos, toda su gloria, provienen del hecho primordial del que es su mayor título: Madre de Dios. Y esto por la singular gracia de Dios que — como ella misma proclama en el evangelio de hoy — “se ha fijado en la humildad de su sierva” y “ha hecho obras grandes” por ella (Lc 1,48-49).
Por la fiesta de hoy no leeremos la siguiente parte del discurso del Pan de vida que corresponde al domingo 20o del Tiempo Ordinario, pero aun así, podemos escuchar el eco de las palabras de Jesús en esta celebración. Sin la cooperación de María no hay Pan de vida. Sin el “Sí” de María, el pan vivo no hubiese bajado del cielo. Es gracias a ese “Sí” que los que comemos este pan viviremos para siempre (cf. Jn 6,51).
Hoy, al recibir al Señor en la Eucaristía, pidamos a María que prepare en nuestros corazones una morada digna para su Hijo, para que a la hora de la muerte encontremos la vida eterna. Que Dios los bendiga.

As previously announced the relics of Blessed José Gregorio Hernández will visit Miami from August 21-24, in the company of the Vice Postulator Fr. Geraldino Barracchini. Why the Priest Kisses the Altar This liturgical custom is one of the oldest, dating back to the 4th century.
Before celebrating every Mass the priest (and deacon) approach the altar and kiss it. To some this practice seems rather odd; but kissing holy and sacred objects has been part of various world religions for thousands of years, and it comes from cultures where the kiss was viewed as a sign of respect.
The altar receives its importance in connection with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass that is celebrated upon it. It has been set apart for this purpose and the bishop consecrates it when it is installed in a new church.
Symbolically the altar is often said to represent Jesus Christ, the “cornerstone” of the Church (cf. Ephesians 2:20). During the history of the liturgy the priest would sometimes kiss the altar before blessing the people, symbolizing how the blessing came from God, not the priest. Additionally, over time relics of saints were inserted into the altar and when the priest kissed the altar, he would be kissing the relics as well. Kissing the altar recognizes its privileged role and relation to the divine sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

Por qué el sacerdote besa el altar
Este uso litúrgico es uno de los más antiguos, pues data desde el siglo IV.
Antes de celebrar la misa, el sacerdote (y el diácono) se acercan al altar y lo besan. Para algunos esta es una acción rara; no obstante, besar objetos sagrados ha sido parte de muchas religiones por miles de años, y proviene de culturas en las que el beso es una señal de respeto.
La importancia del altar radica en que sobre él se celebra el Santo Sacrificio de la Misa. Ha sido separado para este propósito y el obispo lo consagra cuando se coloca en una nueva iglesia.
El altar es también símbolo de Jesucristo, la “piedra angular” de la Iglesia (cf. Efesios 2,20). Históricamente, durante la liturgia el sacerdote a veces besaba el altar antes de bendecir al pueblo, para manifestar que la bendición venía de Dios y no del sacerdote. Además, con el correr del tiempo se colocaban reliquias de los santos en el altar, de manera que cuando el sacerdote lo besa, también besa las reliquias. Besar el altar es reconocer que tiene un puesto privilegiado en relación al sacrificio divino de Jesucristo.

A FATHER IN THE SHADOWS
The Polish writer Jan Dobraczyński, in his book The Shadow of the Father,… uses the evocative image of a shadow to define Joseph. In his relationship to Jesus, Joseph was the earthly shadow of the heavenly Father: he watched over him and protected him, never leaving him to go his own way.
Fathers are not born, but made. A man does not become a father simply by bringing a child into the world, but by taking up the responsibility to care for that child. Whenever a man accepts responsibility for the life of another, in some way he becomes a father to that person. Children today often seem orphans, lacking fathers. The Church too needs fathers…. Every priest or bishop should be able to add, with the Apostle: “I became your father in Christ Jesus through the Gospel” (1 Cor 4:15).
Being a father entails introducing children to life and reality. Not holding
them back, being overprotective or possessive, but rather making them
capable of deciding for themselves, enjoying freedom and exploring new
possibilities. Perhaps for this reason, Joseph is traditionally called a “most
chaste” father. That title is not simply a sign of affection, but the summation of
an attitude that is the opposite of possessiveness…. A possessive love
ultimately becomes dangerous: it imprisons, constricts and makes for misery…. The logic of love is always the logic of freedom, and Joseph knew how to love
with extraordinary freedom.

DEL SANTO PADRE FRANCISCO PADRE EN LA SOMBRA
El escritor polaco Jan Dobraczyński, en su libro La sombra del Padre …, define la figura de José [con la imagen evocadora de la sombra], que para Jesús es la sombra del Padre celestial en la tierra: lo auxilia, lo protege, no se aparta jamás de su lado para seguir sus pasos.
Nadie nace padre, sino que se hace. Y no se hace sólo por traer un hijo al mundo, sino por hacerse cargo de él responsablemente. Todas las veces que alguien asume la responsabilidad de la vida de otro, en cierto sentido ejercita la paternidad respecto a él. En la sociedad de nuestro tiempo, los niños a menudo parecen no tener padre. También la Iglesia de hoy en día necesita padres… y cada sacerdote u obispo debería poder decir como el Apóstol: «Fui yo quien los engendré para Cristo al anunciarles el Evangelio» (1 Cor 4,15).
Ser padre significa introducir al niño en la experiencia de la vida, en la realidad. No para retenerlo, no para encarcelarlo, no para poseerlo, sino para hacerlo capaz de elegir, de ser libre, de salir. Quizás por esta razón la tradición también le ha puesto a José, junto al apelativo de padre, el de “castísimo”. No es una indicación meramente afectiva, sino la síntesis de una actitud que expresa lo contrario a poseer… El amor que quiere poseer, al final, siempre se vuelve peligroso, aprisiona, sofoca, hace infeliz… La lógica del amor es siempre una lógica de libertad, y José fue capaz de amar de una manera extraordinariamente libre.

The Assumption
The central mystery of Mary’s life and person is her divine motherhood. The Assumption completes God's work in her. It was not fitting that the flesh that had given life to God himself should ever undergo corruption.
Even though the Assumption of Mary was not declared a dogma until 1950, the Church has held this teaching sacred from her earliest centuries. The Eastern rites of the Church in Egypt and Syria developed liturgies to the Blessed Virgin Mary celebrating her Dormition very early on. By the end of the sixth century, this feast had spread throughout the Eastern Empire and was to be celebrated on August 15.
This tradition made its way to France in the sixth century and was celebrated on January 18. Eventually this feast of the Dormition became known in the West as the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a teaching was accepted and celebrated in the universal Church in both the East and West. In 1950, in the Apostolic Constitution Munificentissimus Deus, Pope Pius XII proclaimed the Assumption of Mary a dogma of the Catholic Church in these words: "The Immaculate Mother of God, the ever-virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heaven."
The Marian dogmas do not take away from our relationship with Jesus Christ, but only increase and strengthen it. If you want to get to know a person, spend time with his mother. The more time we spend with Mary and learn about her, the more we will come to know and love her Son Jesus.
LA ASUNCIÓN
El misterio principal de la vida de María es su divina maternidad. La Asunción completa lo que Dios ha obrado en ella. No era posible que la carne que había dado vida al mismo Dios pudiera sufrir la corrupción.
Aunque la Asunción de María no fue declarada como dogma hasta 1950, la Iglesia ha creído en ella desde los primeros siglos. Los ritos orientales de la Iglesia en Egipto y Siria desarrollaron liturgias celebrando la Dormición de María en épocas muy tempranas. Para finales del siglo VI, esta fiesta ya se había extendido por todo el Oriente, celebrándose el 15 de agosto.
Esta tradición llegó a Francia en el siglo VI, celebrándose el 18 de enero. Eventualmente esta fiesta de la Dormición comenzó a conocerse en Occidente como la Asunción de la Santísima Virgen, enseñanza aceptada y celebrada por la Iglesia universal, tanto en Oriente como en Occidente. En 1950 el Papa Pío XII, en la Constitución Apostólica Munificentissimus Deus, proclamó como dogma de fe la Asunción de María con estas palabras: “La Inmaculada Madre de Dios, siempre virgen María, terminado el curso de su vida en la tierra fue llevada en cuerpo y alma a la gloria del cielo”.
Los dogmas marianos no restan nada a nuestra relación con Jesucristo, sino que la fortalecen y aumentan. Quien quiera conocer bien a una persona debe pasar tiempo con su madre. Mientras más tiempo pasemos con María, más conoceremos y amaremos a su Hijo Jesús.
