Dear Friends, I have been looking forward to the merry month of October with great anticipation. Our much-awaited Cantor Sharon Colbert is now among us. Per-haps you have already met her or heard her at Temple. It is with enormous delight that we all wel-come her into our ―Family of Families‖ that is Temple Beth Am. God created every one of us as a unique and special soul. Every Cantor brings with her a unique set of gifts. No one person does exactly what another does, nor does anyone ever replicate or replace another. This month, we have the privi-lege of welcoming Cantor Sharon Col-bert with an open-hearted spirit of dis-covery. Cantor Colbert is well-trained, well-motivated and very ready. She brings with her many years of soloist experi-ence, and her shiny new Smicha (Ordination) from the Academy of Jewish Religion-CA., a multidenomina-tional Jewish learning center for Cantors and Rabbis (Google it – you will be im-pressed). With her modern training, she also brings a depth of life-experience and a variety of interesting community en-deavors – ask her about these when you meet her! Jewish worship is inconceivable without song. The truly dedicated and sensitive Cantor gives voice both to the articulated and the soundless songs of the congrega-tion. She is more than an artist working in isolation, struggling only to bring forth her own yearnings, love, joy and anguish. She is our Shelichah Tzibbur, our ―emissary of the community.‖

Cantor Colbert will endeavor to lead us more deeply into our own souls and more richly into the faith of our people. She will help us fuse our prayer with hers, on a level beyond our own power to attain. She will quite literally assist us in lifting our prayers

toward the heavens. Cantor Colbert also will attend to the myriad of daily Temple activities that constitute a modern Cantor’s role. She will teach us (and learn from us), teach our children (and learn from them as well). She eagerly looks forward to par-ticipating in the full panoply of congre-gational family sharing, through life-cycle, joys and sorrows, wellness and sickness. Her pastoral care and concern will assist us all to grow more fully into the persons we might best become. Can-tor Colbert, I believe, will excel in these significant arenas as well. Oh yes, I am glad for October with the consequent arrival of Cantor Sharon Col-bert. I am confident that she will find her special place here in our Temple Beth Am, among our wonderful unique souls, and thereby also find a special place in every heart. I know you will join with me in welcom-ing our new Cantor – and her husband Paul Colbert – with true joy and delight, and a song in our hearts. B’Shalom,

December Temple Topics

Deadline

The deadline for articles to be submitted for inclusion in

the December 2009 issue of Temple Topics is October 21, 2009. Please

submit articles to the editor at [email protected].

Dear Fellow Temple Members:

There are times I’m especially proud to be not just the President of Temple Beth Am, but a member of this Congregation. August 2nd was one of those times.

Walk Off Hunger helped so many people who need help feeding their families. It raised nearly double the money from last year, and will provide nearly a quarter of a million meals for West-ern New Yorkers! If you participated, pledged for someone who did, or helped sponsor the walk, thank you. If you weren’t there, I hope you saw the news coverage. We were featured on every local newscast that night!

It was heartwarming to see so many people from all walks of life take part in our event. They represented many religions and ethnic groups. Many of those groups also participated in our Summer Fest. It was a wonderful multi-faith, multi-cultural day at Temple Beth Am. What a fitting way to honor our beloved Cantor Susan Wehle’s memory, and her goal of uniting peo-ple of all faiths.

The festival also was a big success, and will benefit the Temple in many ways. Thank you to all of our sponsors, including: Bluestein and Muhlbauer, P.C., Imperial Door Controls, Berger & Berger, Family & Children’s Services of Niagara, Inc., TLS Landscaping, Dr. Bernie Davis, Autumn Creek/Green Creek/Stonegate/Windsong Apartments, Wegmans, Silver Spoon, Mes-nekoff Funeral Home, Ellen Scumaci Public Relations, the Weinrieb Family, Active Work-force, Solé Restaurant, Walden Galleria, Jonny C’s NY Deli and Catering, McCullah Coffee, Sound Tracks, the Knee Center of WNY, Randy Spivack, CPA, Impressive Invites and Events, Drew & Liz Messer, Jewish Family Service, Rock Candy Jewelry, Drs. David & Mindy Wein-man, Rob Lederman/Rob’s Comedy Playhouse, Ralph & Gail Kushner, Rion & Julie Kweller, Eric & Leigh Fox, Shelly & Heidi Yellen/Fox Tires, Benderson Development Company, Twin City Ambulance, Mark Rosenthal, Buffalo Cardiology Pulmonary Associates, Electronic Gaming Therapy, Mark & Donna Klein, Scott and Nichole Weinstein/Safetec, Shari Jo Reich, partner with Kenney Shelton Liptak Nowak and United Rentals.

I would also like to thank the hard-working members of the Walk-a-thon and Festival Commit-tees, including Renee Weinrieb, Liz Messer, Jackie Taylor, Ellen Scumaci, Robin Adler, Mike Bluman, Jan Cohen, Bruce Corris, Jeff Cutler, Michael Millman, Diane Robinson, Brian Schepart, Blaine Schwartz, Dan Wolfe, Rick Ellis, Sheldon Yellen, Myra Falk, Rob Lederman and Heidi Neu. All of you devoted so much time to making this day so successful. In particu-lar, I would like to acknowledge Todd Sugarman and Gary Bluestein who, once again, demon-strated their passion for our Temple, and gave so generously of their time and resources.

All in all, it was a memorable day. I’m already looking forward to next year.

Sukkot is a ―thank you‖ holiday. We thank God for providing us

with the variety of the harvest. We learn from the time spent in

the temporary dwelling - the Sukkah - how thankful we should be

for the homes that we enjoy. The United States is our home. The

Western New York community is our home. The residence we

share with our family is the first thing we think of when we think

of home. Temple Beth Am is our spiritual home. As Jews, many

of us feel a special bond with Israel and think of it as home.

A custom that is integral to Sukkot is welcoming guests to this

temporary home. Here at Temple Beth Am, we have the obligation

to greet new families to our Congregation and to extend a sincere

welcome to those who have chosen to dwell with us in this our

sanctified home.

This Sukkot, we also have the opportunity to meet our new

Cantor, Sharon Colbert. On Erev Sukkot, October 2nd at 6:00 PM,

please join our 6th and 7th graders who will be receiving their

Torah portions and Siddurim. These students and their families will

have the initial responsibility and pleasure of becoming acquainted

with Cantor Colbert as she begins her sacred task of helping to

enhance our spiritual home. Let’s all reach out to make her feel

welcome.
