The Compas- sionate Friends provides highly personal comfort, hope, and support to every family experiencing the death of a son or a daughter, a brother or a sister, or a grandchild, and helps others better assist the grieving family. We need not walk alone. We are The Compassionate Friends. We reach out to each other with love, with understanding, and with hope. The children we mourn have died at all ages and from many different causes, but our love for them unites us. Your pain be- comes my pain, just as your hope becomes my hope. We come together from all walks of life, from many different circum- stances. We are a unique family because we represent many races, creeds, and relationships. We are young, and we are old. Some of us are far along in our grief, but others still feel a grief so fresh and so intensely painful that they feel help- less and see no hope. Some of us have found our faith to be a source of strength, while some of us are struggling to find answers. Some of us are angry, filled with guilt or in deep depression, while others radiate an inner peace. But whatever pain we bring to this gathering of The Compassionate Friends, it is pain we will share, just as we share with each other our love for the children who have died. We are all seeking and struggling to build a future for ourselves, but we are commit- ted to building a future together. We reach out to each other in love to share the pain as well as the joy, share the anger as well as the peace, share the faith as well as the doubts, and help each other to grieve as well as to grow. We Need Not Walk Alone. We Are The Compassionate Friends. ~TCF Credo We extend a warm welcome to all who attended their first meeting in July: Laura Boyd, whose son, Alec Christopher Hilman, died in May, 2014 Patti Wall, whose son, Stephen Michael Wall, died in September, 2013 The death of your child is probably the most traumatic, life-changing event that you will ever experience. The Compassionate Friends is an organization of parents who have also lost a child to death. Each of us has experienced the deep, searing pain that you are feeling now. Each of us has turned to other parents who were farther into their grief journey for guidance, support and understanding. This is done through our monthly meetings, our newsletter, our website, our phone-a-friend program, our library, our e-mail program and our referral program. Each month parents find our meeting to be a safe place where they can talk about their pain and problems with others who are uniquely qualified to understand; bereaved parents offer gentle suggestions or often simply listen. We invite you to bring a friend to your first few meetings until you feel a level of comfort with the group. Do not be surprised if we talk about the happy times with our children, the wonderful memories and the various methods we have created to keep our children close to us. It is here that many bereaved parents find hope as those who are more seasoned in their grief shine the light of experience to help illuminate each grief path. We have no dues. We are self-sustaining through donations and the generosity of so many in our community. You Need Not Walk Alone. August Meeting Includes Program on Massage Stress Relief

Sometimes the best idea is to stop putting everyone else first and take care of ourselves This is particularly true for bereaved parents Most of us think of a therapeutic massage as a luxury Yet the reality is this the benefits of massage could be another valuable tool in your grief journey toolbox Proper massage therapy relieves stress and anxiety re-laxes muscles lowers blood pressure and soothes the mind and the broken heart Bereaved parents have found them-selves on a never-ending wheel from which there is no escape Taking grief breaks and putting ourselves first are two of the most important components in the early years of our grief We will have a short presentation on massage therapy stretching and other techniques during our open meeting Rena Leverence a massage therapist in the Katy area who has developed a solid following in the Physical Therapy world as well as in the bereaved and stressed out com-munities will be briefly speaking with us Following the break and during the group discussions Rena will be offering neck and shoulder chair massages at no cost to our members We urge you to take a peek at the massage therapy concept and find out if it is right for you Our meeting will be held on August 12 2014 at the Kingsland Bap-tist Church First time attendees should arrive by 630 for a short brief-ing which will give you information about this new experience The meeting will start at 700 pm Group discussions will begin about 730 pm

Bits And Pieces of Grief

ldquoI can only bite off chunks of grief in bits and pieces How else would I manage to get out of bedrdquo

~Desire Aguirre As with a four-course dinner we must take our grief in small bites The to-tality of our loss the shattering of our psyche and the horrific blow to our brains is just too much to absorb at one time Shock is natures cushion When shock subsides our reality is a physical pain an ache from deep inside that radi-ates throughout our bodies Once this subsides we endure the emotional agony and the kick in the gut that comes unannounced This quotation is very profound for both the newly bereaved and those of us who are much farther down the road of grief The loss of our child will be the single most defining factor in our lives However if we do our grief work and all that this entails we will eventually arrive at something akin to a new nor-mal Life will never be the same We will never be the same But we carry our children forward with us in our hearts and minds imagining all that could have been and accepting that these things are no longer meant to be I have managed to find a serenity and a purpose in my life yet the thrill of living is not the peaks the sadness is not the valleys Life now is steady as you go My compassion for others is now almost automatic my understanding of the macro perspective of life is deeper and wider than ever before I acknowl-edge that there is much to be learned on this journey But it is a painful educa-tion Annette Mennen Baldwin

Choosing Hope ldquoMy freedom is the light of hope that shines from deep within my soul as I now hold my child in my mind and heart For this mother hope is knowing that death does not restrict me from my childrsquos life Death changes only the plane of our relationship for I am his mother and he is my son We will love our children for all eternity That is the freedom in our harness that comes with consciously choosing hoperdquo

Summer Memories

Summertime is a happy time for most people in this country vacations holidays family reunions relaxed days at the pool eve-nings in the backyard talking with family and friends the smell of a fresh rain the long days the cooling nights fresh mown grass and flowers that bloom profusely

Despite Houstonrsquos heat summer has become a treasured time for me My son was a child of summer Born in May he loved the sum-mer sun on his face and the wind in his hair as he first rode a tricycle then a bicycle then drove a car Those were wonderful times for him The summer solstice on June 21 was a favorite day for us both Since the summer solstice is the long-est day of the year Todd particularly loved to watch the sunrise and sunset I found myself doing that again this year As I looked at the sun directly overhead at noon (100 pm DST) I made the comment that this is the one perfectly balanced day of the year Later as I watched a beautiful solstice sunset I remarked to my husband about the lighthellipthe gorgeous light I was seeing Todd in that light He was laughing chasing lightening bugs running and spinning and turning filled with the joy of summer He was happy

I listened to the neighborsrsquo children playing and I thought about all the wonderful summer days I had spent with my son I am thankful that I had that time I am thankful that my child was a son of summer He found much joy in nature in the outdoors in activities that took him out of the ordinary and into the sublime

Thatrsquos how it is for bereaved parents We eventually come to a place where we realize that our joyful memories have overtaken the pain of the loss of our child to death We wouldnrsquot trade the time we shared with our children for anything or any other experience We have many relationships in our lives but the unique nature of the par-ent-child relationship is so special so deep so life changing that we endure and even embrace the pain because we had for that time in our lives a relationship of pure love and pure joy with our child There is no way to measure the depth width or volume of a parentrsquos love It exceeds every other human relationship Yes we miss them terribly We weep silently into our pillows at night We light candles take flow-ers to the cemetery wear their favorite colors treasure pictures of our children and keep them forever in our hearts This is a big part of life for every bereaved parent

Somehow on the summer solstice I felt my childrsquos presence in the light of the day and the beautiful rose color of the solstice sun-set I could hear his voice see his smile and feel his emotions Peace slips into our hearts in extraordinary ways

Open Letter to Our Son On His Eighth Anniversary

Dear Robin You have been gone eight years and it still hurts very much that you are no longer with us I dread this time of year because it brings back memories of the manner of your passing what it was and how much we miss you It took a long time to try to come to terms with the fact that you were never coming back and that we would never hear your voice again We used to pass your room and be brought to tears when look-ing at the empty bed and the two pillows on which your head used to rest when you slept at night It is the anticipation of the anniversary that is more painful than the day itself and we cringe to feel so inadequate at the very thought of us not being able to remember you when we too go to our maker at the end of our days It is thanks to The Compassionate Friends that we have survived with some kind of sanity and are able to laugh again It has taken a lot of time and effort on the part of many others to bring us from the brink of heartbreak into some semblance of balance so that we can try to help others who are experiencing the same journey into the pit of grief Our major problem has been the fact that you were an only child and there was no other person to comfort and care for I often think about the fateful decision that we took not to have another child but in the cir-cumstances given the nature of your disease we did the best that we could and had the patience to deal with all the issues that were thrown at us We have learned many things during the last eight years that have helped us beyond belief and brought us to a sense of who we are Your father has had a very difficult time with his grief and only goes to the Candle Lighting Ceremony in December He finds it very difficult to talk about you without choking up and prefers to grieve privately I do not insist on his attending the meetings of the Compassionate Friends be-cause I realize that men and women grieve dif-ferently I go to the meetings because I know that I can help others who are newer in their grief and maybe I might give them a sense of hope that the journey gets easier one day So Robin we remember you with gratitude since you are a son who is a great sour of pride and your courage in the face of great odds made you a trailblazer We love you and miss you beyond measure

Dont weep for me when Im gone Because Ill always be there

My spirit will exist in all the earth In the water trees and air

August Meeting Includes Program on Massage Stress Relief

Loves Lasting Touch

Dont weep for me when Im gone Because Ill always be there

My spirit will exist in all the earth In the water trees and air

Youll hear me say I love you In the whisper of a breeze

Youll know that Im beside you With the rustling of the leaves Youll feel my arms caress you In the warmth of each sunrise

The moon will be my goodnight kiss The stars my watchful eyes Your life will be my legacy Your memories my epitaph

These ties will bind us together Till we meet on heavens path
