From your Course Leader

Welcome to BA (Hons) Textiles for Fashion & Interiors. In this pack you will find all the information you need to help you settle in to your studies at UCA Farnham this September.

During your time on the BA (Hons) Textiles for Fashion & Interiors course, visual research and visual inspiration will be very important in the development of your textile work. Therefore we have set you a Summer Project. You will not be expected to have completed this project; this will be ongoing, as you will continue to work in this book during the first semester. Have fun and be creative. The most important thing to remember is to enjoy the exploration; this will represent your particular interests and reflect your own creative personality. Please bring the work you have done with you in September.

You are joining a course, which offers the unique combination of innovative and exciting materials-based textile design alongside learning traditional skills in print, and weave.

As a Textiles for Fashion & Interiors student, you will benefit from numerous facilities, including well-equipped design studios, extensive print and weave workshops, excellent dye labs, a dedicated ICT suite, a laser cutter, computerised dobby and ARM looms, and screen printing and Mimaki digital fabric printing facilities.

The first year will be an introduction to the essential design and technical skills/knowledge needed to establish a critical practice and study during your time here. You will develop core knowledge of both print and weave, including understanding of fabric, yarns and dyeing, which enables you to make an informed specialism choice of printed or woven textiles. You will creatively develop your visual studies, drawing, ICT and colour work to support your practical work.

Wishing you all the best for the summer break and looking forward to welcoming you in September.

Best regards Textiles for Fashion & Interiors Team

Student & graduate successes

To give you an insight into the course, I have detailed some of the student successes from 2013-14 to highlight some of the exciting achievements from current students/ recent graduates.

Competition wins for students

Tara Osborough won the New Designers Sanderson Award 2013. Tara won the opportunity of a four week paid work placement to work with Sanderson on weave designs for their collection and won £1000.00. “The judging team unanimously chose Tara’s work for its beautifully considered use of colour to create saturated and painterly cloths that display maturity of design and craftsmanship.”

Tara said “I feel so honoured to have won the New Designers Sanderson Award. Over my past three years of studying at UCA Farnham I have found a passion for colour and I will use the prize money to further my research into colours in textiles whilst I study my Masters. I look forward to starting my placement.”

Tara has been working closely with a Hampshire sheep farmer, following the whole process of spinning, dyeing and weaving the yarn to create textiles using British wool as part of The Campaign for British Wool whose patron is HRH The Prince of Wales. Tara’s work will be featured in an Ireland Homes & Interiors, with a designer profile and images. There will also be a section for readers to win 2 of Tara’s woven cushions. www.newdesigners.com

Summer project

Fragments

To help to keep your ideas and creative energy fresh, we ask you to use the summer break to undertake some creative work. Use this time to build upon your previous education and ideas.

Brief

A small part of something can be more exciting than trying to observe the whole of it; it leaves room for the observer to imagine the context (like a jigsaw puzzle). Archaeologists work from fragments and interpret the pieces to discover history. Images can be broken up, taken apart and reassembled to create new ideas.

Create a sketchbook (this can be bought, compiled, assembled or handmade) but should show your development of ideas from one page to another.

Use the words ‘fragmentation/fragments, deconstruct, break, take apart, analyse, and interpret them creatively in visual form in your sketchbook.

Try to work through a sequence of studies using your own drawings from direct observation. Work with the theme but explore lots of different approaches and use your imagination, be inventive. The aim is for you to keep looking and thinking how to show the development of your theme in your sketchbook.

Observe colour, form, shape and texture using a wide and experimental range of media, creating both analytical and abstract responses. Alongside your own observations you should be collecting the things that inspire you, such as images of designers and artists work, magazine tears, photographs, textile cuttings and exhibition details.

Have a good summer and enjoy looking, collecting and drawing.
