The Sanctuary Lamp wi l l bu rn th i s week in memory of Mark Opdahl requested by Deborah Opdahl.

St. Paul tells us today that “whoever thinks he is standing secure should take care not to fall” and Jesus gives a very strong message in the Gospel when he orders that fig tree to be cut down, if it does not soon bear fruit.

In the Gospel, Jesus is saying that we must repent; and what is it that we must repent from? Well if we take today’s whole passage seriously, it means that we must repent from living unproductive lives. It is not just serious immoral acts that Jesus is warning us about. It is living a life that is not bearing any fruit. So according to Jesus, it is not enough just to avoid committing any sins. That is the least we must do – but it is not enough. We must live lives that are fruitful – lives that will have something to show for them. Jesus is calling for lives that bear fruit.

And so we have to ask ourselves during this time of Lent – where is the fruit of our lives? Not an easy question and perhaps one that could get us into trouble if we do not know how to look; or one that could get us into trouble if we think that the answer is clear and simple because the answer is often not very clear at all.

Is it even a valid question for a Christian to ask where the fruit is? It could seem on the surface to be a selfish kind of question – one by which we are trying to assess the results of our good actions. However, in this regard we should take a cue from the larger Church. The universal Church is involved in a process by which she is continually looking at ways to be more faithful in following the gospel of Christ. This is in a large part what the Councils of the Church have been about. It is certainly true of the Second Vatican Council where the Church declared that it was always in need of reformation.

So the Church as a whole can ask the question about where the fruit is in her life, it is not out of place for you and me to ask the same question. It is all part of repentance, which means, in part, to change our mind.

What does the fruit look like? Jesus tells the parable about the man who had a fig tree. For three years he came looking for fruit from it, but he found none. What is the fruit that Jesus is looking for in our own lives?

Our first response will probably be that the fruit Jesus is looking for are what we call good works. These are the good deeds that we do for others – acts of kindness and compassion – acts of understanding and forgiveness. This is probably the first and most obvious meaning of the word fruit as Jesus using it in today’s Gospel.

Bearing fruit also means changing ourselves so that we more adequately reflect God’s love in the very way that we live as human beings. This calls for prayer and reflection. It calls for the humility to ask God to change us when we need to be changed. It calls on us to put out of our lives anything that hinders God’s fruit from becoming a reality in our lives.

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. (Serenity Prayer)

DID YOU KNOW? For those in the RCIA process seeking full initiation at Easter (Baptism, Confirmation and First Eucharist), the Lenten season is their final phase of prepara-

tion. Three Scrutinies, celebrated on the 3rd, 4th and 5th Sundays of Lent, are an important part of this journey. Just as the name implies, they call the Elect to “scrutinize” their lives in order to “uncover and heal all that is weak, defective, or sinful” in their hearts – sort of a pre-baptismal examination of conscience. They also call the gathered community to “scrutinize” their hearts, strengthen their Lenten resolve, and offer an ongoing example of Christian living for those about to join the Church family. At the Masses where a Scrutiny is celebrated, the read-ings are always from the Year A cycle. Those Year A readings, all from the Gospel of John, include the narra-tives of the woman at the well, the healing of a blind man and the raising of Lazarus, which emphasize conversion, healing and new life that will be received by the Elect in the waters of baptism. This year, our Scrutinies will be celebrated as follows: First Scrutiny—Saturday, March 23 at 5:30 p.m.; Second Scrutiny—Sunday, March 31 at 11 a.m.; and Third Scrutiny—Sunday, April 7 at 5:30 p.m.

Put on your fancy hat and gloves and join us for an afternoon of tea, light lunch and dress-up at our Mother & Daughter Tea on Saturday,

We’re also looking for a group of hubbies/men who would like to be sharp dressed men and serve at the tea. No cooking involved; just helping serve the food and making the ladies feel special. Contact Deborah if you’re interested in helping! AND if you’d like to help cook and serve at our tea, we can always use extra hands in the kitchen and on the floor. Please contact Deborah if you would like to help. Lunch is included! Teens, this is a great way to finish up those school community service hours. You all do such an awesome job!

And because this is such an incredibly labor intensive event, without enough volunteer support, we won’t be able to have this lovely ladies tea. So won’t you please help us out?!?! Give Deborah a call!

UNPLANNED: THE TRUE STORY OF ABBY JOHNSON is the dramatic account of a former Planned Parenthood superstar. Promoted as the youngest clinic director in the nation and recognized as Employee of the Year, Abby was one of Planned Parenthood's greatest allies. That was until she walked out after assisting in an abortion of a 13-week-old fetus. “I thought I was helping women,” said Abby Johnson, founder and director of And Then There Were None, the only group in the country that helps abortion workers exit the industry and find them new jobs. “But I was doing more harm than good. It wasn’t until I saw a child fight for its life that my world came crashing down and I understood the enormity of my actions. I had to leave. No one will be able to walk away after seeing this movie and say ‘I didn’t know.’”
