Caladiums are grown for their long-lasting, colorful foliage. There are three distinct types of caladiums - Fancy Leaf - broad heart-
shaped or arrowhead shaped leaves which generally grow taller; Strap Leaf - pointed, narrow, heart-shaped leaves producing a compact
plant with more leaves than fancy leaf varieties (these are ideal for pot production and hanging baskets; and Dwarf Caladiums -
compact in habit making them ideal for pot plant and hanging baskets.
AVAILABILITY January to May
WHEN TO PLANT
Caladiums require a warm, moist soil. A minimum of soil temperature of 78-800 F is preferred. If planted too early in the spring, cool
soil temperatures will cause tubers to rot before they sprout. They can be started indoors in moist peat moss or potting soil in
containers such as a shallow flat or flower pot. Barely cover tubers with soil and place the container in a warm germination room with
bright light. Tubers should be started indoors approximately four weeks before planting outdoors.
WHERE TO PLANT
For best growth, plant caladiums in well-drained soil with a pH between 6.0 and 6.5. A 2-3" layer of pine bark mulch or compost
should be incorporated into the soil to improve soil aeration, drainage, and organic matter content. Also, incorporate a complete
fertilizer such a 8-8-8 at a rate of 1 to 2 lbs per 100 ft2 of bed area (2 Tbsp per ft2). Plant tubers 2" deep and 8" apart
for small tubers and 12" apart for large tubers. Both roots and shoots emerge from the top of the tuber; place knobby side up.
Mulch with a 2-3" layer of organic material to conserve moisture and keep the soil cool. Soil temperatures over 85° F can result
in leaves with more green color and less of the highly prized brilliant colors. High levels of nitrogen fertilization can product the
same effect. Caladiums are heavy feeders of potash and phosphorus and must have ample moisture and summer feeding of
fertilizer in order to produce good tubers for the next growing season. Caladiums are not drought tolerant and should be
watered on a regular basis.
FALL CARE AND STORAGE
Caladiums can be treated as annuals and left in the garden to be killed by cold weather. However, it is possible to save
caladium tubers for planting again the following year. In the fall with the onset of cool nights, the leaves will begin to fade and
droop. Before the leaves have lost all color and before soil temperatures drop below 55° F, dig the tubers that are to be saved,
retaining the foliage and sort them by color or cultivar. Spread them out in an area protected from rain and cold, and allow them to
dry for a week. Do not place in full sun. After leaves have dried, cut them from the tubers. Store the tubers in mesh orange or
onion bags; or pack lightly in dry sphagnum moss and store them where the temperature will fall below 60° F.
Canna thrive in full sun producing lush green and bronze foliage and bloom in vibrant colors. Canna are sturdy plants and need no staking.
AVAILABILITY February - May
WHEN & WHERE TO PLANT
Canna can be planted anytime of the year in southern zones but the soil temperature should be 78-80° F. In zones 3-8, plant in spring
and summer when ground temperature is not below 65° F. They should be started indoors one month prior to moving outside.
Canna prefer a sunny location in moist, fertile soil.
HOW TO PLANT
When planting outside, prepare soil by spading and adding compost or rotted manure. Rhizomes should be planted 1 - 1/2" deep and
spaced 18-24" apart. Soak well after planting. For container planting, pot one rhizome per gallon in well drained potting mix.
Containers will finish in 10-12 weeks when potted during the appropriate temperatures: Daytime 70-75° F; Night 65-70° F.
Fertilize established (2-3 weeks) plants monthly with 1:2:1 ratio (12:24:12 or 5:10:5), fertilizing at 1/2 the package recommendation.
NPK at 200 ppm weekly in injector fed systems.
DISEASE
Moth larvae, commonly called 'leaf roller worm" is the only insect of consequence affecting canna. It can be controlled with application
of malathion every three weeks.
WINTER PROTECTION & MARKETING
In zones 3-7, landscape canna should be dug after the first light frost in the fall and stored at 45-50° F. In zones 8-10 canna should be
mulched before heavy frost. Container plants need appropriate winter protection for the area.

Elephant ears are native of tropical countries and are grown for their beautiful large leaves. They are suitable for growing
in containers and for borders. The large leaves grow atop 3-7 foot stems. They need a minimum temperature of 70° F.
They can be grown outdoors for the summer and brought in before frost. After the last frost, plant tubers when night temperatures
maintain around 60° F. Plant 2-3" deep and up to 6 feet apart in rich, organic soil. The tubers may be started indoors at
temperatures from 70-75° F. Water plants generously and fertilize often. In fall after the first frost, dig up the tubers, cut off
the foliage and store with the soil attached at 45-55° F.
Canna will thrive in full sun producing lush green and bronze foliage and blooms in vibrant colors. Sturdy plants - need no staking.

Wonderful garden item in warm areas and excellent cut flower. Also, with Bonzi, makes a good winter-to-spring
potted plant. Small to medium bulbs should be planted in a 6-8" pot and larger bulbs make fine tub items. When plants are not
treated with Bonzi or are in established stands, the flower stems can reach a height of 30" or more. Great for bogs and borders
and around ponds.

STORAGE AFTER ARRIVAL
Unpack on arrival. Dispose of any soft rot and wash hands to avoid spreading the bacterial to healthy bulbs. Place in well
ventilated trays at 65° F for a couple of days prior to planting. This will insure any possible friction wounds caused by
transit are well callused before planting. For long-term storage (6 weeks or more) keep well ventilated at 45° F and a
relative humidity of 80%.
POTTING MEDIUM
Plant with 1 to 1 1/2" of medium over the tuber, rounded side down, sprouts (eyes) up. Pot sizes below 4 1/2" standard are
more difficult to grow due to root volume restrictions (especially in clay pots). Additional care and management of fertility and
irrigation are required in small or shallow pots because plants tend to be weaker, more easily stressed and, therefore more
disease prone. The medium should be well drained, a pH of 6 - 6.5 and have good air porosity (optimal at 20% +/- 5%).
WATERING
Water management is critical. Keep pots moist but avoid excessively wet and excessively dry conditions. The first (within 2
days of planting) through watering should be a three-part preventative chemical drench. Then water
sparingly until leaves unfurl. In week 3 or 4 reinoculate with a drench of Trichoderma and then a week later do a second chemical
drench. Schedule these drenches to coincide with required watering to avoid overly wet pots.
LIGHT
Calla can be exposed to full sunlight, unless the temperature in the greenhouse goes over 80° F, then some shading is
recommended to avoid leafburn - between 2500 - 5000 is ideal.
FERTILIZER
Early fertility levels in calla, at the time of planting and extending two weeks, enhances overall long-term plant fullness and
uniformity of vigor. A 10-20 day media incorporated pre-charge of nitrogen and potassium (no phosphorous in early pots)
would be ideal.
MARKETING
Market your pots with slightly less than one half the total number of expected blooms showing color or in spike. Ship long
distances under refrigerated conditions (approximately 40° F or 5° C) to avoid excessive stretching. Retail under cool and
bright conditions.

Gladiolus can be stored for several months if kept in a cool, well ventilated place. Use a deep, well drained pH6-6.5 soil
and plant in full sun. Plant so that the soil is 4" above the corms. Plant corms 2" apart in rows - this is about 5 corms
per row foot. Keep rows 2 or 3 feet apart. Use 2 pounds of 5-10-10 per 100 row feet before planting.
Depending on variety, growing time is 70-80 days. Gladiolus can be planted at intervals assuring constant flower
production during the summer. Be sure to add water to glads during dry conditions, otherwise growth will be stunted.
Cut in tight bud stage with 2-3 leaves remaining on the stem and with 1-5 florets showing color. Store upright in a floral
preservation at 41-45° F. If shipped, flowers should be held upright to prevent bending.

These gladiolus are shorter than regular glads with flower stalks that produce
more flowers. With the shorter height, this makes them ideal for garden borders as they
are less likely to tip - also good for landscapes. Vigorous growers.

Hybrid lilies have risen in popularity over the past years, and have Watering - Temperature - Ventilation - Fertilizer
become a profitable crop for the grower and an attractive flower Water the planting medium thoroughly after planting and then keep
for the consumer. A big part is their versatility. They are available the medium moist but not wet
year-round and can be shipped on a weekly schedule, or shipped
for specific target dates. Hybrid lilies have a relatively short
forcing time and they are a cool-grown plant. Bulbs are already
precooled when they arrive at the greenhouse.
Asiatic and Oriental hybrid lily bulbs used for cut flower forcing
can be forced on a year-round basis by using a combination of
precooled and frozen-in bulbs. The number of cultivars available
is constantly changing. Generally, the asiatics force in 8-10 weeks.
Oriental and auratum lilies force in 12-15 weeks and are available
until June 30th.
On Arrival
After being programmed, forcers should be prepared to plant bulbs
immediately on arrival. If they must be stored, place them at
32-35 ° F (0-2 °C). Storage at higher temperatures will cause
desiccation of the bulbs which will result in fewer flowers per stem.
Forcers should always check to be certain the bulbs are not
seriously damaged or diseased. Do not store for longer than 10
days. DO NOT REFREEZE.
Planting and Spacing
The planting medium should be sterile, well drained and have a pH
of 5.5 to 7.5 with pH 7.0 being preferred. Because some lilies can
develop leaf scorch due to soil borne fluoride, the medium should
not contain superphosphate or perlite. If ground beds or raised
benches are used, be certain to sterilize them and be sure they are
low in soluble salts. Leaching may be necessary. They must be
well drained.
Bulbs for cut flowers can be planted in ground beds, 8-10" (20-25
cm) deep raised beds or standard pots. Plant bulbs with at least 2"
(5 cm) of planting medium above the bulb nose. This is necessary
to develop stem roots.
Suggested Number of bulbs for Cut Flower Forcing in Beds or
Raised Benches
12/14 cm 6-9 per sq ft 16/18 cm 4-6 per sq ft
14/16 cm 5-8 per sq ft 18/20 cm 4-5 per sq ft
Support System
Because of their length and variation in stem strength, some cut
lily cultivars may need wire support systems. If used, be certain
the netting has holes large enough to accommodate easy cutting
and removal of the flowers. Also, place the netting over the bulbs
directly after planting.
Light
Lilies require a medium to high Light (>2500 ft candle) intensity
greenhouse, especially during the short days of winter. If shading
was used during the summer, be certain to clean the glass thoroughly
before winter. In most instances lilies respond to HID lighting
during the winter months. This aids in reducing flower abortion and
abscission especially with sensitive cultivars. Forcers who have low
light intensity winters should seriously consider installing an HID
lighting system for forcing cut lilies. When very high light condition
occur (spring/summer), screening or shading is advised. Extremely
high light intensities can reduce the length of the cut flower.

Use 55-63° F (13-17° C) night temperatures and not higher than
70° F (21° C) day temperatures. Avoid great fluctuations in
temperature, because this can help to promote leaf scorch. Also, whenever possible, start Orientals at 59° F (15° C) for about 4
weeks. Later, Orientals can be forced at higher temperatures
(63-65° F/17-18° C) than Asiatics. In general, Asiatic and longiflorum lilies take 30-35 days to flower after they reach the
visible bud stage of development and Orientals take 50-55 days.
Lastly, when seasonally warm temperatures occur, try to keep the soil and air temperatures below 68° F (20° C). Mulching of
ground or raised bed and shading are advised.
Use a well ventilated greenhouse. Do not permit humidity to
build up.
The bulbs themselves contain lots of stored food, and they should be
able to support the plant until the shoot emerges. Recommendations
suggest withholding fertilizer until the shoot is 4-6" tall. Some growers incorporate a 10-6-4 slow release fertilizer in the
medium prior to planting. Suggested rate is eight pounds per cubic
yard. Use a liquid fertilizer such as 16-4-12 at the rate of 200 ppm to help deepen foliage color. If a preplant fertilizer has been
added to the soil, then just use the liquid fertilizer every two weeks.
Growing in the Summertime
It is very important that the stem roots are developed before
exposing the lilies to warm summer temperatures. Keep the planted bulbs for 3-4 weeks at or below 65° F to allow the roots
to grow. This can be done in a bulb cooler or cool basement.
Bulbs that have a poor root system will flower unevenly and have
a lot of bloom dropping.
Marketing, Harvesting and Storage Forcers - as soon as the first flower has fully developed color,
but is not open, the plants should be cut. Care must be taken not
to damage the unopened buds during marketing. Whenever possible, lilies should not be stored.

One of the most popular varieties grown. Produces an abundance of medium to large purplish tinged, tender and flavorful
shoots. Good rust and fusarium resistance.
Best of the Jersey Hybrids. High yield. Produces thick, flavorful spears with purple tips that are both tender and sweet.
Fusarium disease tolerant.
Very vigorous with twice the yield of old-fashioned kinds. Resists fusarium, crown rot and rust. Best for fine flavor and the
largest succulent spears.
Unique variety with 20% higher sugar content. When cooked, the sweetness gives this asparagus a mild, nutty flavor.
Spears are generally larger and much more tender than tradional green varieties.

Asparagus requires large space, with lots of sun and well drained soil. Male asparagus plants produce higher yields, spears might be smaller but are typically
uniform and more numerous. Best time to plant is Mid-April into late May.
Soil Preparation and Planting Asparagus thrive in soil with a pH of 7.0. If a soil test shows that the soil is too acid, sweeten it with ground limestone. Plant crown in a furrow 10" - 12" deep,
18" apart. Adding 1/2 pound of 10-10-10 fertilizer to each 10 foot stretch of trench, along with 4" of aged compost to the bas so the trench, is beneficial. Fan
out the roots and cover with 2"-3" of soil, continue covering with soil as shoots emerge, until furrow is filled with soil. Asparagus roots need a thick layer of
soil protection from the elements and hazards of cultivation. Water as needed.
Bed Care As the season progresses, pull in more soil from the sides of the trenches until it is completely filled in. Every three months or so, fertilize each plant with a
small handful of 10-10-10 fertilizer.
Harvest Do not harvest the first year. During 2nd year, harvest a few a over 3 week period. Keeping the harvest to a minimum will allow as many stems as possible to
continue growing and nourish the plants the following years. Third year harvest over 4-6 weeks period and Fourth year harvest over a 6-8 week period,
stopping when 75% of the spears are smaller than the diameter of a pencil.
Shoots should be harvested when they are about 6"-7" high.
After Harvest Bed Care Fertilize the bed with 5-10-5 or 10-10-10 immediately after the harvest and again in mid-July and mid-August.

Where to plant Strawberries are best planted in a sunny location with fertile, well-drained soil. Improve your soil with lots of organic matter prior to planting and
growing. Strawberries will tolerate semi-shade, however, yield will be less than those grown in full sun.
Planting Strawberries For growing in the ground, plant strawberries 18" apart and in rows 30" apart. Dig a hole large enough to accommodate the roo ts of the plant. If
planting strawberry runners, spread the roots out in the hole and make sure the crown of the plant is resting at soil level. Pot grown plants should be
planted so the top of the compost is level with the soil surface. Planting too deeply can cause the plants to rot, and plant ing with the crown too high
above the soil surface can cause the plants to dry out and die. Firm in well and water thoroughly.
Growing in Hanging Baskets and Containers For a 12" hanging basket, it is best to only grow 3 or 4 plants so that all the plants receive adequate light, water and nut rients so as not to reduce yield.
Incorporating water-retaining granules and appropriate slow release fertilizer is recommended prior to planting. Check daily and water if the top half-
inch of soil/compost medium feels dry.
White Carolina
Unique strawberry with a taste that is a cross between a strawberry and a pineapple. The fruit is smaller than a traditional
strawberry, but unlike a traditional strawberry, the flesh of a pineberry is white with red seeds. Fruit exposed to direct sun will
develop a pink blush. The fruit is very aromatic with a scent that is reminiscent of a pineapple.
