PRO’S CORNERThe season is underway albeit with a cooler and slower start than we would like. I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that pace of play is vitally important to Club Health. We are all part of a large family here and with that comes shared common space. Please read two excerpts below from our past rules and etiquette meetings.

• “Although delaying other players is often an indication of slow play, it is not the final test. Some, by nature, move more slowly than others, but a player whose normal pace is slightly slower than another may not be guilty of needless delaying actions.” They should, of course, let faster players through.

• Some become involved unavoidably in situations which require a bit of extra time (looking for lost balls). They may temporarily delay other players without being guilty of needless delaying actions. They should, of course, catch up quickly

The entire pace policy can be found below:Pace Policy Below are the expectation guidelines. While the total time is the ultimate goal, the interval is also of importance. So, along with the parameters below an interval time of 10 minutes must also be maintained.

1st & 2nd hours of tee times ~ 4:10 hours or less3rd & 4th hours of tee times ~ 4:20 or lessRemainder of Day ~ 4:30 or less

Pace Policy Non-Compliance PenaltyAs with any policy, it is only as effective as the penalty for non-compliance. Started in 2009 during our Club Championship, this policy continues to be effective for ensuring enjoyment for all our Members.

1st Offense• If any group finishes outside of the acceptable

parameters designated by their tee time, they will be given a verbal warning

2nd Offense• If any player that has been issued a verbal warning

violates the parameters again, they may only play during the designated hour of their 2nd pace offense for 1 week

Subsequent Offenses• Any subsequent offenses will result in the player

being prohibited from playing in the tee times with lower expected finish times for 2 weeks

• Any further violations may results in loss of weekend playing privileges.

Tournament Tee Policy The list of applicable events and player requirements are below. They may also be found posted in the locker rooms. Those who don’t qualify under this rule but wish to play a forward set of tees must request approval from the Head Professional. The decision is at his discretion and the decision may be reviewed as circumstances change.

COMBO TEES: AGE + your HANDICAP = 75You are eligible to play the Combo Tees in sanctioned events.

WHITE TEES: AGE + your HANDICAP = 80You are eligible to play the White Tees in sanctioned events.

Players must be at least 55 Years of Age to qualify. The handicap portion will be based off the Garnet tees

Applicable Events• Member Guest Invitational• King of the Hill and Palmer Cup **• Shootouts• 9 n’ Dines • 1 Day Men’s Member/Guests• Adult Child• Men’s Member/Member• Hawthorn Woods Cup• Husband & Wife • Fall Classic

Turf News On The Course with Scott Hillyard

Winter is finally past, thankfully, and Spring has come along. It wasn’t a very stressful winter, and our bentgrass handled it very well. A period of thick ice accumulation in January has taken a toll on the Poa annua spots on greens and collars, and this is a good thing. Hopefully not too much of the Poa seed germinates and bentgrass overtakes these areas, only time will tell. Our greens, tees, and fairways are still waiting to green up, and growth is still limited with the stretch of cold weather we endured to start April. In order to promote the healthiest turf possible during the stressful periods of summer, we will not be pushing grass as we do in mid season. Green speeds and firmness will come when the turf is healthy enough to tolerate the stress. I would expect to see the push for typical conditions begin roughly around the middle of May. Regardless, we are playing golf now, and that makes everyone just a little happier.

April saw greens aerification come and go. And May will consist of continued cultural practices to improve plant and soil health, as well as playability over the long term. You will see aerification processes on fairways, tees and approaches, topdressing of tees and approaches, and verticutting all taking place. While there are many benefits to these practices, the most important aspect is the removal and/or dilution of organic matter. Just like there are many benefits

to aerification, there are several reasons to reduce organic matter accumulation. But as it pertains to you, too much organic matter leads to less than ideal playing conditions. This is a long term process to see sustained results, but well worth the effort over the long term.

Additionally, May is traditionally a month of growth. During the Spring season, growth explodes both above and below the surface. Mowing kicks into high gear and we do everything we can to stay on top of it. But what you don’t see is the big strides made in root growth. This is a critical time to best prepare us for the stress that always comes with the warmer summer months. Root loss during the heat is a natural occurrence, and the deeper we push roots now dictates plant health later in the season.

Those are the things for me to worry about. What you need to worry about is getting the little white ball into the little white cup, a much more stressful task than I have to deal with. I hope to see full tee sheets everyday and a lot of new and old faces this season. I expect nothing less than great playing conditions in 2016 and I want you to share that with all your friends. Let’s have a great season!
